To Sir (!) Tony Blair, they are selfish idiots. To Bob Carr, they are simpletons. To the Archbishop of Canterbury (and, no doubt, the Pope), they are immoral. To Justin Trudeau, they are misogynist racists. Emanual Macron wants to "p… them off". Jacinda Ardern smirks at the suggestion that punishing them ushers in a two-tiered society. Daniel Andrews wants them excluded from the economy. Scott Morrison wants one in particular excluded from Australia and from an iconic tennis tournament. The LA Times journalist Michael Hiltzik suggests that mocking their deaths from Covid is "necessary". They have been described as a "global underclass". We don't even need to mention "granny killer". Two academics of very different political hues reckon they should be punished via the tax system, since they are "free riders". They are taking up all the ICU beds. Even Covid "liberals" like Dominic Perrottet want them excluded from certain classes of public service, including teaching, seemingly unaware that children are close to being at nil risk of catching Covid. To all of the above, they are a tiny minority (which is actually not true), and so able to be gaslit. Of course, I speak of the fate of the so-called anti-vaxxer. In the words of British media scholar Michael Wayne, the current vilification of the unjabbed amounts to "moral condemnation". Condemnation of an enemy by those engaged in a propaganda war. Worthy of a Dantean circle of hell, probably. Shamelessly defaming anti-vaxxers has become quite the sport, to go along with their exclusion from non-deplorable society and the evisceration of their rights by the Covid State and its allies. The unjabbed are at the coal face of the papers-please society embraced by Australian and other governments of every ideological persuasion. They are especially loathed when they dare to bring up Nazi Germany and concentration camps. Just ask (soon-to-be-ex-MP) George Christensen.

In the United States, "freedom" became the catchphrase of those who argue against authoritative experts and institutions pushing for restrictions, masking requirements, social distancing, and vaccine mandates. Anti-vax parents argue for the family's freedom to do as they see fit in raising their children. Masks, whether for children or adults, are often equated with "muzzles" trying to limit the freedom of others to express themselves. The consequence of such views of freedom came at the cost of the health and lives of others, particularly in states where the government blocked public health mandates and restrictions. However, those who reject vaccines do not see themselves as against good health, indeed they often see their position as the healthiest one and are skeptical of the authority of well-documented science.

Because it would allow governments to ease restrictions, end the bribes (aka subsidies), commence the economic recovery, give us back at least some of our rights and claim that they were right about the Covid scare all along. Hilariously, given the panicked approach of governments over Covid itself, castigating those who are appealing to the precautionary principle when it comes to vaccines. Perhaps this year should be named the year of the problematic vaccine. It is, after all, experimental. It has been developed with indecent haste. Its positive effects are still debated, in particular how effectively it prevents infection as opposed to relieving symptoms. Many use tissue from aborted foetuses, either in testing or manufacture or both. (This may not be an ethical issue for the Pope, but is an ethical issue for me). It is, for most, not needed. Many governments have suspended the AstraZeneca vaccine's distribution. The dangers of taking it may outweigh the risks of getting Covid. The side effects of getting the jab are real, if confined to only a few. The chances of getting Covid may increase immediately upon getting the vaccine. Healthy people are dying "of", or at least "with" the vaccine. There are medical concerns over the vaccination of children. Yet the official medical family still trots out calming messages for the masses. The biggest problem for governments attempting to make the case for maximum vaccination of the population is the giant elephant in the room. This is the total lack of logic at the centre of the state's case. If most people don't and won't get sick from Covid, which they won't, then most of the people do not actually need the vaccine. Giving it to them is therefore a waste of time and money. And a waste of government energy. A waste of propaganda and column inches. Like all the other things-masks, double masks, triple masks, sanitising, house arrest of the healthy, mass testing of the asymptomatic, contact tracing and the rest-vaccines are simply Covid theatre.
