KSANDR/PLN AM Seminar AM exercise, Day 1, Feb 23rd 2010

Introduction
Exercise
A HV network in Indonesia consists of 30,000km of overhead transmission
lines. The transmission lines are widely spread out over the country.

As an asset manager, you are interested in all the risks, concerning

overhead transmission lines. In this exercise you will focus on the critical
components of the overhead line and the direct consequences if a failure
occurs. This can help you with developing a inspection policy.
Exercise

The transmission lines consists of steel-aluminum conductors and steel

towers. Each tower carries 2 three phase circuits. The complete system
can be divided in 3 subsystems:

1. Conducting subsystem
2. Dielectric subsystem (insulating system)
3. Support system (construction)

7 components used in these systems are given below:

1. Concrete foundation
2. Glass insulator
3. Steel tower construction
4. Steel-aluminum current conductor
5. Lighting strike conductor
6. Conductor joint
7. Accessories (suspension hardware)
Exercise 1
1: Function description

•Describe the function of the Over Head Transmission Line

•Describe the function of the subsystems
•Describe the function of each components
Exercise 1
1: Function description

•Describe the function of the Over Head Transmission Line

•Describe the function of the subsystems
•Describe the function of each components
Exercise 2: Component failures
Describe for each component:
•The possible failures
•The cause of the failure
•The consequences for the total system if the failure occurs
Exercise 3: Quantify all
parameters and determine 3
most critical components
In this case the total effect is:

Impact on safety + impact on technical damage + impact on system function.

Where:
Safety Technical damage System loss
1) No injury 1) <$1,000 1) No loss of circuits
2) Light injury 2) $1,000 - $10,000 2) < 120hrs Loss of 1 circuit
4) Heavy injury 4) $10,000 - $100,000 4) > 120hrs Loss of 1 circuit
8) Permanent heavy or deadly injury 8) $100,000 - $1000,000 8) < 120hrs Loss of 2 circuits
16) More than 1 deadly injured 16) > $1,000,000 16) > 120hrs Loss of 2 circuits

And frequency is divided in:

Probability
1) F <1 time per year on 10000km
2) 1 time < F <10 times per year on 10000km
4) 10 time < F <100 times per year on 10000km
8) 100 time < F <1000 times per year on 10000km
16) F >1000 times per year on 10000km
Exercise 3: Quantify all
parameters and determine 3
most critical components
• Group 1: 10,000km Overhead lines (in ringstructure so
n-1) in a high populated region (Jakarta)

• Group 2: 10,000km Overhead lines in a radial (no n-1)

and high populated region (Jakarta)

• Group 3: 10,000km Overhead lines in a radial (no n-1)

and rain forest region
Exercise 3: Quantify all
parameters and determine 3
most critical components
Exercise 3: Quantify all
parameters and determine 3
most critical components

• 3 most critical components

• 1)
• 2)
• 3)
Exercise 4: Reduction of risk

What could you do in order to reduce risk for

these 3 components ?

Reduction of failure probability :

Reduction of failure consequence :
