Q.1 (a) Renovation work aims to upgrade the buildings up to a required

standard. Discuss the criteria for an efficient renovation work in
terms of the following aspects:
(i) Economical (2 marks)
(ii) Social; and (1 marks)
(iii) Environmental. (2 marks)

(b) Structural steel is a common construction material but still has (10 marks)
drawbacks on implementation. Identify SIX (6) advantages and
FOUR (4) disadvantages for the use of structural steel elements.

Taken consideration of wind load resistance (safety & practicality

aspects) of the building, suggest and explain a suitable
construction material for the proposed skeleton frame.

(c) With the aid of an annotated sketch, prepare a typical structural (10 marks)
steel frame construction with concrete floor and show the steel
beam and column connection.

Q.2 (a) Sound insulation is required for specific building function. Discuss
the following sound energy absorption mechanism:
(i) Porous absorption; (3 marks)
(ii) Panel absorption; and (3 marks)
(iii) Cavity absorption. (4 marks)

(b) With the aid of an annotated sketch, design a high sound insulation (15 marks)
concrete floor construction.

Q.3 (a) Curtain wall construction is common in commercial buildings. (6 marks)

Explain the key considerations on selecting curtain wall as external
wall finishes.

(b) Slab opening is usually required for installing new staircase, lift, (13 marks)
damp water and passage of services ducting. Explain in detail a
procedure for formation of an opening in an existing concrete slab.

(c) Explain SIX (6) factors that influence the choice of appropriate (6 marks)
contractual arrangement for an alteration and additional work
project.

Q.4 (a) As a subcontractor, you are required to make a presentation to the (16 marks)
client’s Project Manager about the quality of your formwork
system. Briefly explain the formface quality you provided and the
drawbacks of using other sub-standard materials.

(b) Explore various methods of taking care of the formwork system in (9 marks)
order to increase its service life.

Q.5 (a) A 5m high and 12m long wall with uniform cross section of 1.0m (20 marks)
at bottom and 0.6m at top is going to be cast with concrete in one
go from the top.

Anticipated site conditions during concreting are as follows:

 Concrete temperature : 24C ~32C
 Unit weight of concrete : 25kN/m3
 Rate of concrete delivery : 6 trucks per hour each delivery
5m3

Given the following formula (from CIRIA Report 108) in

computing concrete pressure on formwork, determine the
maximum design concrete pressure in kPa for each 1m interval
elevation.

Pmax  D C1 R C 2 K H  C1 R  or Dh, in kPa

 

where D = unit weight of wet concrete (kN/m3)

R = rate of concrete level increase (m/hr)
H = height of formwork (m)
h = depth of wet concrete level from top (m)
T = concrete temperature
2
 36 
C1=1.5; C2= 0.6 and also K  
 T  16 

(b) Plot a diagram of concrete pressure against wall form height in (5 marks)
order to determine the maximum pressure.
