Chapter 6: Linear equations

Exercise
Solve the following linear equations.

(a) 4x – 1 = 11 (b) -1 + 5y = 14

4
(d) – 10 = 6
m x
(c) +3=9
6

x+ 8 3+5 a
(e) =7 (f) =9

(g) 4(h-1) = 8h (h) 4x – 5 = -3x + 8

2(m−1) 4k
(i) + 4 = 10 (j) 4 - + k = 10

12r −8 Form a linear equation in two variables for the

(k) = 2r following situations.
4
(i) The price of a lemon is RMx and the
price of an apple is RMy. Jasmin
bought 4 lemons and 10 apples with
the price of RM20.

Tini bought m bookA for RM4 abd n book for

RM5. The total price is RM21

Solve the following simultaneous linear equations.

Example (Substitution method) Example (Elimination method)
x + y = 12 1 2g – 5f = 7 1
x–y=8 2 9g – 5f = 14 2

From 1 2 - 1 => 7g = 7
x = 12 - y 3 g=1

Substitute 3 into 2 Substitute g = 1 into 1

x–y=8 2(1) – 5f = 7
12 – y – y = 8 2 – 5f = 7
-2y = 8 -12 - 5f = 7 – 2
-2y = - 4 - 5f = 5
−4 5
y= f=
−2 −5
f = -1
y=2

Substitute y = 2 into 3

x = 12 – y
x = 12 – 2
x = 10

(a) 4x – y = 6 (b) y = x +2
5x + 2y = 1 2x + y = 11
(c) 5a + 2b = 9 (d) x – 2y = 6
3a – 2b = 15 2x 5y

Simultaneous Linear Equation (Graphical method)

Example
Solve the following simultaneous linear equations
2x + y = 3 1
x–3=y 2

From 1 y
x 0 2
y 3 -1
4
when x = 0, 2(0) + y = 3 3
y=3 2
1
when x = 2, 2(2) + y = 3 x
4+y=3 -3 -2 -1 0 1 2 3 4
y=3–4 -1
y = -1 -2
(0, 3) ,(2, -1)

From 2
x 0 3
y -3 0
Answer: x=2
y = -1
When x = 0, 0 – 3 = y
y = -3
When x = 3, 3 – 3 = y
y=0
(0, -3) , (3,0)
