Some important strategies for estimating products given in the text are rounding factors to the highest place value and multiplying the rounded factors. Estimation is also used to check if answers are reasonable.

To estimate products, round the factors to the greatest or highest place value, then multiply the rounded factors. This allows you to get a ballpark figure for the actual product.

Estimation is an important skill to use to assess if answers are reasonable using mental computation and estimation strategies. It is also an important part of everyday experiences in real life.

Activity Title: Estimating the Products of 3- to 4-Digit Numbers by 2- to 3-Digit Numbers

MELC : estimates the products of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 2- to 3-digit numbers with reasonable
results M4NS-Ic-44.2
In this activity you will…
a. estimate the products of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 2- to 3-digit numbers with reasonable results
b. use estimation to assess the reasonableness of answers through mental computation
c. appreciate the importance of estimation in checking answers
Introduction:
In real life, estimation is part of our everyday experience. It is an important skill
to be used to assess if the answers are reasonable using mental computation and estimation
strategies. To estimate the products, round the factors to the greatest/ highest place value, then
multiply the rounded factors.
Discussion and Examples:
Example 1: The garden club is selling orchid plants at Php3 225 a pot for fund raising. If 105 pots were
sold, about how much money did the club get?
Questions:
What can these orchids do to our surroundings?
Are they important to us? Why?
How much is a pot of orchid plant?
How many pots were sold?
What phrase in the problem indicates that an estimated product is being asked for?
How do we estimate products?

Study the solution below:

Step 1: 3 225 3000 Step 2: 3000
X 105 X 100 X 100
300 000
First, round the multiplicand and multiplier to the highest or greatest place value.
Then, multiply the rounded numbers.
Answer: The club would get about Php300 000.

Find the actual product to check if the estimated product is reasonable.

3 225
X 105
16125
0000
3225
338625 actual product

Is the estimated product close to the actual product?

What is the shorter way of multiplying numbers with zeros at the end?
To multiply numbers with zeros at the end, multiply the nonzero digits then copy as many
zeros to the product as there are in the factors.
Example: 600 x 60 = 36 000
Multiply first the nonzero digits 6 x 6 = 36. Then copy the 3 zeros to the product.
Example 2: Estimate the product of 211 x 37.
1
We round off 211 to 200 and 37 to 40. Multiply 200 and 40 and the result is 8000, which is the
estimated product.
211 200
X 37 x 40
1477 8000 Estimated product
633
7807 Actual product
Notice that the estimated product is close to the actual product.
How do we estimate the products of 3- to 4-digit numbers by 2- to 3-digit numbers?
To estimate the products, round the factors to the greatest/highest place value, then multiply the
rounded factors.
