MELC: describes the texture of a musical piece.

I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. describe monophony, homophony and polyphony;
b. prepare for the given tasks or activities; and
c. perform a song that shows the different texture of music.

II. Subject matter

Topic: Texture in music (monophony, homophony and polyphony)


Concept/s: Texture is the way harmonies, melodies, rhythms, and timbres relate to create
the overall effect of a piece of music.
Monophony – is a texture in music that refers to a melody played or sung solo.
Homophony – is a texture in music that refers to a single melody sung or played with
accompaniment.
Polyphony – is a texture in music that refers to two or several simultaneous lines of
independent melody.

A. Preliminary activities

B. Review
- The teacher will ask for clarifications about the last topic.
- The teacher will have a short quiz about their last topic about musical
terminology to indicate variations in tempo

List at least 5 musical terminologies to indicate variations in tempo.

C. Motivation
- The teacher will present pictures for students to guess the present topic.

1. The teacher will ask the students what did they observe in the pictures.
2. The teacher will reveal the topic about the texture in music.

D. Discussion
- The teacher will ask some students about their favorite songs.
- The teacher will ask some students who is their favorite singer.
- The teacher then explains the topic.

Texture in music
- Texture is the way harmonies, melodies, rhythms, and timbres relate to create
the overall effect of a piece of music.

There are 3 textures in music:

1. Monophony – is a texture in music that refers to a melody played or sung solo.

Example: Any acapella song

2. Homophony – is a texture in music that refers to a single melody sung or played


with accompaniment.

Example: Any acoustic songs (solo singer, no duets)


3. Polyphony – is a texture in music that refers to two or several simultaneous lines of
independent melody.

Two kinds of polyphony

 Round
 Partner song

1. Round – is polyphonic texture where the same melody is sung or played in different
layers where each layer is coming in at different times.

2. Partner song – is a polyphonic texture where two different melodies are sung or
played at the same time.
