Principle of Autotransformer
• Autotransformer (AT) is a transformer consisting of a
single winding with electrical connection points called
taps.
• Autotransformer starting uses a step-down
autotransformer (single-winding transformer) to
reduce the line voltage.
• Autotransformer starters offer the greatest reduction
of line current of any reduced-voltage starting
method.
• Multiple taps on the transformer permit the voltage,
current, and torque to be adjusted to satisfy many
different starting conditions.
• The autotransformer starter can be used for any
squirrel-cage motor.
Transformer vs Autotransformer

Different between 2 winding
transformer & auto transformer
• 2 winding transformer • single winding tranformer
(autotansformer)

• has two separate magnetically

coupled coils with no electrical
connection between them
• Transformers are made up from
primary and secondary coils (called • To change the level of voltage using
windings) a single coil
Advantages of Autotransformer
• Has fewer windings and smaller core, therefore it is lighter and less
costly than a two-winding transformer.

• Copper loss in the common portion of the winding will be less, so

efficiency will be slightly more

• Lower leakage reactance, lower exciting current.

• Variable output voltage can be obtained.

Disadvantages of Autotransformer
• No isolation (direct connection) between HV and LV side. In fact, due to
an open circuit, the voltage on the load side may shoot up to
dangerously high voltage causing damage to equipment.

• This unexpected rise in the voltage on the LV side is potentially

dangerous to the personnel working on the LV side.

• The short-circuit current is much larger than for normal two-winding

Operation
• First to start press push button START (Green) then the contactor MC2,
MC3, MC4 and Timer will turn ON.
• Until timer reach the setting time MC2, MC3, MC4 and timer will turn
OFF.
• Then MC1 and Indicator Run (Green) will turn ON.
• To stop press push button STOP (Red) and MC1 will turn off then
indicator stop (Red) will turn ON.
• For TRIP when the contactor is ON and the running ampere(A) is over
then the setting ampere(A). The overload will trip then the trip indicator
(Yellow) will turn ON. To reset the overload press the reset button (Blue)
on the overload
