Definition of Adverbs of Frequency

- Adverbs of frequency describe how often an action occurs. They answer the question "How often?" and indicate the
regularity or repetition of an event or action.

Common Adverbs of Frequency and their Approximate Frequencies

Adverbs of frequency vary in terms of how often an action is repeated. Below are some common adverbs of
frequency, along with their approximate percentages of occurrence:
- Always (100% of the time)
- Usually (80-90% of the time)
- Often (60-70% of the time)
- Sometimes (40-50% of the time)
- Occasionally (20-30% of the time)
- Rarely (10% of the time)
- Never (0% of the time)

Placement of Adverbs in Sentences

The placement of adverbs of frequency in sentences varies depending on the structure of the
sentence. Here are the main rules:

- In sentences with a single main verb (other than "to be"), adverbs of frequency are usually
placed before the verb. For example:

"She often eats dinner at 7 PM."

"They always play soccer on Saturdays."

- After the Verb "To Be": When the verb "to be" (am, is, are, was, were) is the main verb, the
adverb of frequency comes after it. For example:

"He is always happy."

"They were usually late to class."

- At the Beginning or End of the Sentence: In some cases, especially for emphasis or clarity,
adverbs of frequency can be placed at the beginning or end of a sentence. However, this is less
common and is usually used in more formal or written contexts. For example:

"Occasionally, we go to the movies."

"We go to the movies occasionally."

TWO TYPES of Adverb of Frequency: Definite and Indefinite.

Definite Adverbs of Frequency: These adverbs provide a specific frequency or time frame.
Examples include daily, weekly, monthly, yearly, once, twice, etc. They clearly state how often an
action occurs.
Example: "She exercises daily."

Indefinite Adverbs of Frequency: These adverbs do not specify an exact time frame but give a
general idea of how often an action happens. Examples include always, usually, often, sometimes,
rarely, never, etc.

Example: "He often forgets his keys.”

F. Valuing
 What is the importance of utilizing adverb of frequency in sentences?
Adverbs of frequency are important in English, specifically in sentences
because they help provide more specific information about how often an action
occurs. Their placement in a sentence can change its meaning or emphasis,
making it crucial to use them correctly.
