Tutorial Sheet-I
1. An air-cored toroidal coil shown in Fig.1 has 3000 turns and carries a current of
0.1A. Cross sectional area of the coil is 4cm2 with magnetic circuit length being
15 cm. Compute magnetic field strength, flux density and total flux within the
coil. (Ans: 2000 AT/m, 2.5 X 10-3 Wb/m2, 1µWb)

2. A rectangular iron core as shown in Fig.2 has a mean length of magnetic path
100cm, cross sectional area 2cm X 2cm, relative permeability 1400 and an air
gap of 5 mm cut in the core. The three coils on the core carry no. of turns, Na=335,
Nb=600 and Nc=600 with respective currents in the coils being 1.6A, 4A and 3A.
The directions of currents are marked in the figure. Compute flux in the air gap.
(Ans: 100µWb)

3. (a)A magnetic core in the form of a closed ring, has a mean length of 20cm, and
a cross section of 1 cm2. The relative permeability of iron is 2400. What direct
current would be needed in a coil of 2000 turns uniformly wound round the
ring to create a flux of 0.2 mWb in iron? (Ans: 66.3mA)
(b)If an air gap of 1 mm is cut through the core perpendicular to the direction of
flux, what current will now be needed to maintain the same flux in this gap?
What fraction of total ampere-turns is required to maintain the same flux in
the air gap? (Ans: 862mA, 0.924)
4. A magnetic circuit is excited by three coils as shown in Fig.4. Calculate the flux
produced in the air gap. The material used for core is iron having relative
permeability of 800. The length of the magnetic circuit is 100 cm with an air-gap
of 2 mm in it. The core has a uniform cross section of 6 cm2. (Ans:0.7661 mWb)
