INTRODUCTION
 The Word AutoCAD is made up of two words Auto (logo
of company) and CAD (computer aided design/drafting)
 AutoCAD is 2D and 3D modelling software.
 It is developed by Autodesk company.
 Autodesk is an U.S.A. based company.
 It is widely used in industry for 2D drawing and 3D
modeling
 In another way we can say that AutoCAD is a designing
course which is performed by the help of computer.
Basic Concept of AutoCAD
 Co-ordinate System, Drawing Aids, Display Control,
Limits command.
 Computer Aided Design (CAD) is the latest breakthrough in the
modern technology that became a part of variety of professionals
like Engineers, Architects and Interior Designers.

 CAD helps in the presentation of Engineering Drawings,

Architectural Drawings, Interior Designs, Work-flow charts,
Organizational Diagrams and Company logos etc.
 An AutoCAD drawing is made up of objects. These can be either
simple graphic objects (such as lines, arcs, circles, text, etc.) or
blocks (which are groups of objects).

 Designs and drawings can be standardized and more accurately

presented by using AutoCAD.

 Drawings drawn on AutoCAD can also be transmitted to CAM

(Computer Aided Manufacturing) system for the actual
production of the product design.
Version Of AutoCAD
 AutoCAD software was firstly launched by Autodesk
company in Dec. 1982.
 John Walker Developer 0f AutoCAD.
 It comes in INDIA in1988
 The first version of AutoCAD was R1 after that
R2,R3,R4.. and so on.
 This time, we have the latest version of AutoCAD is 2023.

Advantages of AutoCAD

 Generation of graphic images on a computer

 Modification of graphic images on a computer

 Printing these images as a hard copy by a printer or a

plotter
 Retrieval of designing information
Disadvantages 0f AutoCAD
• Complexity

• High cost

• Steep learning curve

• Potential software compatibility issues

• Hardware requirements

• Lack of cloud-based collaboration

Application
1) By producing photorealistic animations and videos, it can simulate
how a design will actually function in the real world.
2) CAD can convey many types of information, including
dimensions, types of material, and tolerances and is essential in
offering solutions to both engineering and manufacturing
problems.
3) Proposals and presentations
4) Work-flow charts and organizational diagrams
5) Graphs of all kinds
6) Drawings for electronic, chemical, civil, mechanical, automotive
and aerospace engineering applications
7) Technical illustrations and assembly diagrams
Advantages of using computer over
paper work
 Easier creation of the drawing

 Easier correction of the drawing

 Easier visualization of the drawing

 Increase the accuracy of the drawing

 Increase the life of the drawing

 Drawing can be stored and easily referenced for the further

modification
Hardware and Software Requirements for
AutoCAD
 Minimum IBM compatible 80386 computers
 At least 64MB of RAM. Autodesk recommend at least 128 MB.
 Hard disk with at least 50MB or more space.
 One floppy Drive
 Digitizing tablet or mouse
 Printer or plotter
 A video display adapter (VGA) that is capable of displaying Windows
The Program Files in AutoCAD
 ADS (AutoCAD Development System):
Files contain in this directory are programs and sample codes for
ADS
 ASE (AutoCAD SQL Extensions):
Files in this directory are for database programmers interested in
linking AutoCAD drawings to the SQL servers.
 Fonts:
Contain the standard font-definition files.
 Sample:
Contain the sample drawing and Auto Lisp programs
 Sample:
Contain the sample drawing and Auto Lisp programs

 Source:
Contain the ASCII source file for many of the support files.

 Support:
Contain the files that support variety of AutoCAD’s functions
such as linotype, fonts and pattern etc.

 Tutorial:
Contain the sample files used in conjunction with the tutorial that
appear in various AutoCAD manuals.
HOW AutoCAD WORKS
 There is a co-ordinate system used in AutoCAD.

 Every drawing shows its co-ordinate.

 There is so many commands like copy, move rotate mirror in 2D,

path array, rectangular array, polar array & more

 Different types of drawing can be made in the same time by using a

command that is LAYER.

 Using line, arc, circle, rectangle, ellipse & polygon, so many

drawing of different type can be made.

Ways of Entering Commands
 Command Entry:

All the commands can be entered from the keyboard, screen

menu, pull-down menu or from the button menu.
 Data Entry:

When the command is invoked, a user has to supply additional

information to specify how, where or upon what the requested
action should be performed. A user responds to AutoCAD by
entering numeric values, specifying angles and distances

Co-Ordinate System
AutoCAD provides two types of coordinate systems:
1) Work Coordinate System (WCS) is fixed and cannot be changed
2) User Coordinate System (UCS)

HOW CO-ORDINATE SYSTEM WORKS:-

• There is a co-ordinate system used in AutoCAD.
• Every drawing shows its co-ordinate.
• To give co-ordinate we need to have an center point.
• so we need to start with an origin point (0,0).
• In following figure the line shows its co-ordinate that is (100,0) and
(0,100).
Hatching
 Hatching is used to add shaded patterns to objects and shapes

within an AutoCAD drawing. Hatch patterns can be used to

indicate a material to be used, such as a concrete hatch.
 You will pick:

• Pattern

• Scale

• Points

• Angle
