This book is intended as an attempt from our side to
study about the Campus Planning principles
adapted in an Indian context. A campus to us is an
organic entity which guides and collaborated
different functions and actives. The interrelation of
open, semi open and confined space is
contemplated differently in all campuses according
to need, typology and regional context. It is this
quality that defines each campus differently,
imparting certain character feel and image to the
campus.
In order to perceive the sense of space each
campus has, we chose a few that we visited and a
few that we studied and analyzed over internet.
Our visit and study made us realize how differently
beautiful each campus was, how it was true to the
setting it was in and how it responded to the
program.
As it is said change is inevitable, its true in the case
of campus planning also. A change in thought
process of designing, need, environment, material
has an impact on the how campus is designed
today. To conclude with ever changing time, the
way campuses are will also change.

Campus is a very integral part of a student’s life. As
an architect our duty is to sensitively design
campuses as it has a deep impact on a student.
Hence the aim of this elective was to understand
the campus planning principles by the means of
studying and documenting various campuses and
principles by famous architects so that the students
get a better idea to plan inspiring campus that will
be benefiting to their design vocabulary as well as
shape their designing skills.
It is an attempt to understand the larger perspective
and influences that shape up the built spaces along
with contextual evolution of design.
My best wished to all my students on this

According to Dubai’s Design and Fashion Council’s (DDFC) Design Outlook Report 2016, the MENA region will require approximately 30,000 design graduates by the year 2019. This number is nine times the existing amount of design graduations currently produced annually (DDFC 2016). Therefore, the design education industry is continually growing and becoming very competitive. In the UAE, there are currently 11 institutes, which deliver a bachelor’s degree in interior design. The aim of this paper is to bring forth recommendations to innovate and enhance an existing interior design program at a leading university in Dubai to set it apart from the competition. Utilizing a positivists (realism) approach to be able to determine the necessary reform required for the interior design program through the content analysis of a) relevant literature review, b) review and analysis of two program accreditation bodies, and c) reviewing two of the top five programs of interior design. An analysis of the findings was formed followed by a comparison to the existing interior design program at the selected university then resulted in three conclusions: 1. Improvement of the learning environment and the collaborative project work both within the institution and internationally. 2. Incorporate effective teaching methodology to enhance the student’s visualization skills through converging and assimilating teaching methodologies. 3. Additional specialization courses to increase the percentage of design course output in the curriculum while additionally incorporating sustainable design within interior design program.

Designing a built environment requires the development of individual capacity for thought with respect to subjective and objective aspects. Studying and designing projects of small scale that involve a more immediate and basic experience is important in this context. The study and project exploration will involve the following aspects from first principles as well as through live studies and theory – human behaviour, activities and needs for various purposes, role of specific form/space in creating particular experiences and effects, built form-open space relationships, spatial organisation, environment behaviour aspects (especially those relating to children), lighting and ventilation, site as a positive tool in all scales, potential of materials and construction. Through this, both the qualitative and quantitative attributes of design can be understood and engaged. This would give training in the ingenious use of architecture to fulfil goals towards a responsive and stimulating environment.

  • 3. AUTHOR’S WORD This book is intended as an attempt from our side to study about the Campus Planning principles adapted in an Indian context. A campus to us is an organic entity which guides and collaborated different functions and actives. The interrelation of open, semi open and confined space is contemplated differently in all campuses according to need, typology and regional context. It is this quality that defines each campus differently, imparting certain character feel and image to the campus. In order to perceive the sense of space each campus has, we chose a few that we visited and a few that we studied and analyzed over internet. Our visit and study made us realize how differently beautiful each campus was, how it was true to the setting it was in and how it responded to the program. As it is said change is inevitable, its true in the case of campus planning also. A change in thought process of designing, need, environment, material has an impact on the how campus is designed today. To conclude with ever changing time, the way campuses are will also change.   • 4. MENTOR’S WORD “we shape our building; thereafter they shape us” – Winston Churchill Campus is a very integral part of a student’s life. As an architect our duty is to sensitively design campuses as it has a deep impact on a student. Hence the aim of this elective was to understand the campus planning principles by the means of studying and documenting various campuses and principles by famous architects so that the students get a better idea to plan inspiring campus that will be benefiting to their design vocabulary as well as shape their designing skills. It is an attempt to understand the larger perspective and influences that shape up the built spaces along with contextual evolution of design. My best wished to all my students on this publication. As an introduction we have studied the principles of campus planning from the book “campus design in India” by architect Achyut Kanvinde.
