Latest: Pickets shut the port for the night shift as well, making a full 24 hr shutdown.
Earlier: The whole port of Oakland is shutdown with 3,000 pickets!! We are shutting down the whole port not just ZIM and military cargo. This is a protest against Israel and the U.S. govt without which this genocidal war could not happen. Biden, Blinken and Austin are war criminals thats why so many protesters turned out. Tonight the employers may try to work the port. The picket will continue for the nightside dispatch of jobs. I think there may be a showdown if police are sent in.
There was supposed to be a mass picket Saturday AM. The employers PMA found out and canceled all jobs for dispatch from the union hall. This was a victory for the protesters against the war in Gaza! Jack Heyman.
Solidarity message: Congratulations to everyone on the picket, to AROC for organising, and to all those ILWU members honoring the picket. This action, and others which it may spark, is the one thing that Netanyahu, Gallant, Biden, Blinken, Sunak, Starmer et al never imagined: that workers all over the world might make the Palestinian cause their own, and turn a genocidal war into a class war. Solidarity from Liverpool. Greg Dropkin.
Questions for healthworkers, partly answered by the BBC report "Inside the secret talks":
The International Dockworkers Council - IDC, an organisation representing over 140,000 dockers worldwide, hereby communicates its full support for the demands of the Liverpool dockers.
As an international organisation based on solidarity among workers, IDC does not rule out taking action to defend the interests of the Liverpool dockers, dismantling any attempt by the companies to undermine the strike legally organized by UNITE THE UNION for September 19, 2022, where IDC will be present reinforcing the picket line.
IDC is also mediating to unblock the conflict.
We recall that this is a conflict of wage parity, requesting a wage increase in line with inflation in the country.
In solidarity

Jimmy Nolan letter to ILWU - 18 November 1997
Letter to Jimmy Nolan 23 January 2021
Excerpt from Solidarity, Global Restructuring and Deregulation: The Liverpool
Dockers’ Dispute 1995-98, by Monica Clua Losada
The need for internationalism grew from the stark realisation that the way
in which dockworkers in Liverpool had fought previous struggles was no longer
going to be effective. The world in which they operated had changed radically.
In 1967 and 1989, they were not alone and they were not just fighting their
employer. Their struggle was not localised, but rather part of the struggle of
many other British dockers against both their employers and the regulatory (or
deregulatory) changes initiated by the government. This time it was just them
and the employer and they were only a few. It was in this sense, that shop
stewards’ chairman Jimmy Nolan, recollecting his previous international
experience, launched the idea of an international initiative in a pub conversation
amongst the shop stewards.
Nolan’s idea got the ball rolling. The dockworkers already had contacts,
and the support groups that had started to be formed in Britain, particularly the
Merseyside support group and some of the initiators of the London support
groups, had contacts in the international Trotskyist movement. The international
campaign was based upon three pillars: the dormant international contacts
amongst dockworkers, the international Trotskyist movement and the Liverpool
dockworkers themselves creating ‘flying pickets’. At the same time, a fourth
factor started to become prominent, the use of the Internet. At this stage the
coordination of these four factors was not necessarily a coherent strategy, but
rather the attempt to utilise everything available...
