In February 1909, the science magazine Popular Mechanics published the image of an airship on its cover. The airship was flying over a city and the caption for the image read: “First (Tactical) Destruction of a Great City.” The accompanying article explained: “To demonstrate how easily a fortified city could be destroyed by bombs dropped from airships at night, Roy Knabenshue sailed over Los Angeles on the night of December 18 [1908], and dropped confetti bombs onto the heads of the thousands of people” for an hour and a half. This illustration accurately foreshadowed one of the most surprising and...

The Complex History of a Building
With the temporary exhibition pavilion of the German Reich at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Mies van der Rohe designed an architectural icon, but also a controversial monument of the way the Weimar Republic portrayed itself.
The building is one of the most unusual success stories in the history of architecture: Despite its short existence, its reputation grew steadily in the following decades, thanks in part to magnificent photographs. It was soon considered the constructed manifesto of the Modern Age, and its spatial and "ideational" ambitions were called "a milestone of Modern architecture."
This comprehensively, broadly researched book portrays the building’s complex history and its political entanglement—up to and including its reconstruction according to van der Rohe’s plans at the original site between 1983 and 1986.
- Presumably the most important and influential architectural icon of the 20th century, uniquely documented and depicted.
- Many never before published photographs from archives in the US, Germany and Spain.

A history of the building's reception.
While Mies van der Rohe’s pavilion at the International Exposition in Barcelona in 1929 went unnoticed by most of the visitors to the fairgrounds, contemporary critics enthusiastically hailed it as the most convincing statement of the Modern Age.
This book presents 100 selected texts about this much discussed building, written then and now: from the opening speech by the Spanish king, to newspaper articles and private letters, voices of contemporary architects, architecture critics and historians, and even a text by artist Ai Weiwei, who created an installation in the outdoor area of the pavilion in 2010.

ABSTRACT: There is a constellation of images of Mies van der Rohe’s German Pavilion, unpublished in 1929, that complement the official photographs, and disclose many aspects and details of the building. These are the casual photographs, some taken by local photographers to cover the official opening; other ones by visitors as a souvenir travel, or by amateur photographers in their night walks, or simply by the employees of Mies’ office. Unspecialized photographs presented here, some of them unpublished, allow us a more natural and everyday approach to the building, while at the same time, they contribute to a more accurate historical construction of this key building of the twentieth century modern architecture.

CALL FOR PAPERS
MATERIA ARQUITECTURA N°24: URBAN NOCTURNE
Guest Editor: David Caralt
When the day gets dark, the city begins to gradually mutate and
acquire new changing faces. If on one hand, the city presents itself
(officially) as an almost spectacular installation, on the other, it offers
possibilities to explore territories of liberation, strangeness and
conflict. The urban nocturne configures a space-time of multiple and
plural, ambiguous and mysterious personality.
The colonization of the night began in the mid-nineteenth century
with the progressive implementation of lighting systems (considered
by Reyner Banham as "the greatest environmental revolution in
human history since the domestication of fire1"). Public street lighting
provided safety for people's circulation and increased consumption
time, while the city became a great shining showcase for the
enjoyment of a wide social range. Nevertheless, vast urban areas
remained submerged in darkness, allowing free rein to forbidden
pleasures, to liberation, but also to danger and death.
But the urban night is not only limited to the possibilities offered by
artificial lighting, it also expresses the unscheduled and unpredictable.
It can manifest itself as a magnificent political theater, as an
intensification of clandestine experiences or, as a fertile ground for
new furtive and interactive urban practices of nocturnal activists.
Scarce in architectural discourses (in which we tend to think in diurnal
terms), the night invites us to rethink the political, cultural and
economic agendas of cities. By understanding its potential, we can
weave urban narratives that consider temporary architectures,
ephemeral monuments, new centralities and practices of nocturnal
culture that recognize the relevance and complexity of the night as an
exceptional platform for thinking about cities.
The urban nocturne is where two narratives intertwine: that of the
"city of light" that presents the official narrative of well-lit avenues and
monuments, public parties and festivals of light, together with an
invisible or unofficial history of secret parties, spontaneous space
occupation and multiple free manifestations, of night works,
peripheral neighborhoods and interstitial areas built from
infrastructures that create an equally powerful nocturnal landscape.
Materia Arquitectura 24 invites to explore the intersection between
night, space and society with contributions that enrich the nocturnal
knowledge of cities. The urban nocturne calls to reflect on the double
topography of the night as a singular moment in which architecture
and urban landscape can reveal themselves as spaces suitable for
hosting forms of life characteristic of nocturnality.

This article argues that there is a relationship between aerial views and the representation of catastrophe prior to the arrival of military aerial photography in the aerodynamic era. First, the article briefly reviews utopian literature that, in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, fantasized about the possibility of flying and warned of the destructive potential that vision from the air holds. It emphasizes that the conquest of the sky that began with the aerostatic balloon was represented with a sombre vision of a globe-eye as a warning of the coming danger. It also describes a series of representations of destruction, accomplished or in process, in ancient documents that used the aerial view and anticipated the photographs from planes that recorded the devastation of the wars of the twentieth century. This article argues, in short, that visual dominion from above turns the aerial view into a privileged position from which to represent the destruction of architecture and cities.

Ciclo Mujeres y Arquitectura Moderna – Sesión 4: 24 septiembre 2020

As part of its effort to pursue collaboration with the wider
community, the Universidad San Sebastian’s Architecture
School established a course conceived as an architecture
office where professional, potentially buildable projects focused
on social needs are developed in their entirety. This course,
called Practice Studio, is held in the fifth year of study as the
only course of the semester and as an essential requirement
for the degree cycle. The Studio employs Service Learning
methodology and helps in the development of necessary
professional skills (communication, capacity to solve complex
problems, and team work). This article presents the course’s
working methodology, its relation with similar national and
international initiatives, and a description of two specific
projects (the design and refurbishment of the studio as an
architecture office and the design of a rural house) to discuss
this model’s pedagogical benefits, future prospects and
potential applications.

community, the Universidad San Sebastian’s Architecture
School established a course conceived as an architecture
office where professional, potentially buildable projects focused
on social needs are developed in their entirety. This course,
called Practice Studio, is held in the fifth year of study as the
only course of the semester and as an essential requirement
for the degree cycle. The Studio employs Service Learning
methodology and helps in the development of necessary
professional skills (communication, capacity to solve complex
problems, and team work). This article presents the course’s
working methodology, its relation with similar national and
international initiatives, and a description of two specific
projects (the design and refurbishment of the studio as an
architecture office and the design of a rural house) to discuss
this model’s pedagogical benefits, future prospects and
potential applications.

In certain socioeconomic circumstances it is necessary to design learning methodologies based on the analysis of the student entrance profile. In the case of the Universidad San Sebastián introductory architectural design class, Foundation Studio, this study has made it possible to design a course that structures learning through a series of activities that progress in difficulty. Initially, simple concepts are developed through short, guided exercises that are very limited both in terms of material, as well as the handling and format variables. The complexity of the problems increases progressively until end the year when students complete a basic architectural exercise with a reduced programme and minimal material exploration that emphasizes spatial articulation and material handling. Thus it becomes possible to even out the students’ design abilities with a view to their progress in subsequent years.
