In recent years, the investigation of novel materials for various technological applications has gained much importance in materials science research. Tri-molybdenum phosphide (Mo3P), a promising transition metal phosphide (TMP), has gathered significant attention due to its unique structural and electronic properties, which already make it potentially valuable system for catalytic and electronic device applications. Through an in-depth study using the density functional theory (DFT) calculations, this work aims to clarify the basic properties of the Mo3P compound at different pressures. In this work, we have studied the structural, elastic, optoelectronic and thermophysical properties of binary Mo3P compound. In this investigation, we varied uniform hydrostatic pressure from 0 GPa to 30 GPa. A complete geometrical optimization for structural parameters is performed and the obtained values are in good accord with the experimental values where available. It is also found that Mo3P possesses very low level of elastic anisotropy, reasonably good machinability, ductile nature, relatively high Vickers hardness, high Debye temperature and high melting temperature. Thermomechanical properties indicate that the compound has potential to be used as a thermal barrier coating material. The bonding nature in Mo3P has been explored. The electronic band structure shows that Mo3P has no band gap and exhibits conventional metallic behavior. All of the energy dependent optical characteristics demonstrate apparent metallic behavior and agree exactly with the electronic density of states calculations. The compound has excellent reflective and absorptive properties suitable for optical applications. Pressure dependent variations of the physical properties are explored and their possible link with superconductivity has been discussed.

Photovoltaics (PVs) are a critical technology for curbing growing levels of anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions, and meeting increases in future demand for low-carbon electricity. In order to fulfil ambitions for net-zero carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2eq) emissions worldwide, the global cumulative capacity of solar PVs must increase by an order of magnitude from 0.9 TWp in 2021 to 8.5 TWp by 2050 according to the International Renewable Energy Agency, which is considered to be a highly conservative estimate. In 2020, the Henry Royce Institute brought together the UK PV community to discuss the critical technological and infrastructure challenges that need to be overcome to address the vast challenges in accelerating PV deployment. Herein, we examine the key developments in the global community, especially the progress made in the field since this earlier roadmap, bringing together experts primarily from the UK across the breadth of the photovoltaics community. The focus is both on the challenges in improving the efficiency, stability and levelized cost of electricity of current technologies for utility-scale PVs, as well as the fundamental questions in novel technologies that can have a significant impact on emerging markets, such as indoor PVs, space PVs, and agrivoltaics. We discuss challenges in advanced metrology and computational tools, as well as the growing synergies between PVs and solar fuels, and offer a perspective on the environmental sustainability of the PV industry. Through this roadmap, we emphasize promising pathways forward in both the short- and long-term, and for communities working on technologies across a range of maturity levels to learn from each other.

Here we report the structural, elastic, bonding, thermo-mechanical, optoelectronic and superconducting state properties of recently discovered XIr3 (X = La, Th) superconductors utilizing the density functional theory (DFT). The elastic, bonding, thermal and optical properties of these compounds are investigated for the first time. The calculated lattice and superconducting state parameters are in reasonable agreement to those found in the literature. In the ground state, both the compounds are mechanically stable and possess highly ductile character, high machinability, low Debye temperature, low bond hardness and significantly high melting point. The thermal conductivities of the compounds are found to be very low which suggests that they can be used for thermal insulation purpose. The population analysis and charge density distribution map confirm the presence of both ionic and covalent bonds in the compounds with ionic bond playing dominant roles. The calculated band structure and DOS profiles indicate metallic character. Unlike the significant anisotropy observed in elastic and thermal properties, all the optical constants of these compounds exhibit almost isotropic behavior. The optical constants correspond very well with the electronic band structure and DOS features. We have estimated the superconducting transition temperature of the compounds in this work.

Quantum emitters in two-dimensional layered hexagonal boron nitride are quickly emerging as a highly promising platform for next-generation quantum technologies. However, precise identification and control of defects are key parameters to achieve the next step in their development. We conducted a comprehensive study by analyzing over 10,000 photoluminescence emission lines, revealing 11 distinct defect families within the 1.6 to 2.2 eV energy range. This challenges hypotheses of a random energy distribution. We also reported averaged defect parameters, including emission linewidths, spatial density, phonon side bands, and the Debye-Waller factors. These findings provide valuable insights to decipher the microscopic origin of emitters in hBN hosts. We also explored the influence of hBN host morphology on defect family formation, demonstrating its crucial impact. By tuning flake size and arrangement we achieve selective control of defect types while maintaining high spatial density. This offers a scalable approach to defect emission control, diverging from costly engineering methods. It highlights the importance of investigating flake morphological control to gain deeper insights into the origins of defects and to expand the spectral tailoring capabilities of defects in hBN.

We have looked into the structural, mechanical, optoelectronic, superconducting state and thermophysical aspects of intermetallic compound Zr$_3$Ir using the density functional theory (DFT). Many of the physical properties, including direction dependent mechanical properties, Vickers hardness, optical properties, chemical bonding nature, and charge density distributions, are being investigated for the first time. According to this study, Zr$_3$Ir exhibits ductile features, high machinability, significant metallic bonding, a low Vickers hardness with low Debye temperature, and a modest level of elastic anisotropy. The mechanical and dynamical stabilities of Zr$_3$Ir have been confirmed. The metallic nature of Zr$_3$Ir is seen in the electronic band structures with a high electronic energy density of states at the Fermi level. The bonding nature has been explored by the charge density mapping and bond population analysis. The tetragonal Zr$_3$Ir shows a remarkable electronic stability, as confirmed by the presence of a pseudogap in the electronic energy density of states at the Fermi level between the bonding and antibonding states. Optical parameters show very good agreement with the electronic properties. The reflectivity spectra reveal that Zr$_3$Ir is a good reflector in the infrared and near-visible regions. Zr$_3$Ir is an excellent ultra-violet (UV) radiation absorber. High refractive index at visible photon energies indicates that Zr$_3$Ir could be used to improve the visual aspects of electronic displays. All the optical constants exhibit a moderate degree of anisotropy. Zr$_3$Ir has a moderate melting point, high damage tolerance, and very low minimum thermal conductivity. The thermomechanical characteristics of Zr$_3$Ir reveal that it is a potential thermal barrier coating material. The superconducting state parameters of Zr$_3$Ir are also explored.

Barium titanate, BaTiO3 (BT), materials have been synthesized by two different routes: one ball-mill-derived (BMD) nanopowder and another precursor-derived (PCD) BT synthesis method were used separately to fabricate BT thin films on stainless steel (SS) and quartz substrates by spin coating. Then thin films from both synthesis routes were characterized by Ultraviolet-Visible-Near Infrared (UV-Vis-NIR) Spectroscopy, Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), X-ray Diffractometry (XRD), Raman Spectroscopy, and Four-point collinear probe; all carried out at room temperature. Our studies revealed that the PCD synthesis process did not produce the BT phase even under the 900^0C air-annealing condition. In contrast, a homogeneous BT thin film has been formed from the BMD-BT nanopowder. The optical band gap of BMD-BT thin films was found in the 3.10 - 3.28 eV range. Finally, a Graphene-Barium Titanate-Graphene (G-BT-G) structure was fabricated on a SS substrate by spin coating at processing temperatures below 100^0C and characterized by two different pieces of equipment: a Potentiostat/Galvanostat (PG-STAT) and a Precision Impedance Analyzer (PIA). The G-BT-G structure exhibited a capacitance of 8 nF and 7.15 nF, a highest dielectric constant of 800 and 790, and a low dielectric loss of 4.5 and 5, investigated by PG-STAT and PIA equipment, respectively.

Despite the rapid rise in the performance of a variety of perovskite optoelectronic devices with vertical charge transport, the effects of ion migration remain a common and longstanding Achilles heel limiting the long-term operational stability of lead halide perovskite devices. However, there is still limited understanding of the impact of tin (Sn) substitution on the ion dynamics of lead (Pb) halide perovskites. Here, we employ scan-rate-dependent current-voltage measurements on Pb and mixed Pb-Sn perovskite solar cells to show that short circuit current losses at lower scan rates, which can be traced to the presence of mobile ions, are present in both kinds of perovskites. To understand the kinetics of ion migration, we carry out scan-rate-dependent hysteresis analyses and temperature-dependent impedance spectroscopy measurements, which demonstrate suppressed ion migration in Pb-Sn devices compared to their Pb-only analogues. By linking these experimental observations to first-principles calculations on mixed Pb-Sn perovskites, we reveal the key role played by Sn vacancies in increasing the iodide ion migration barrier due to local structural distortions. These results highlight the beneficial effect of Sn substitution in mitigating undesirable ion migration in halide perovskites, with potential implications for future device development.

Short-range ordering in cation-disordered cathodes can have a significant effect on their electrochemical properties. Here, we characterise the cation short-range order in the antiperovskite cathode material Li$_2$FeSO, using density functional theory, Monte Carlo simulations, and synchrotron X-ray pair-distribution-function data. We predict partial short-range cation-ordering, characterised by favourable OLi$_4$Fe$_2$ oxygen coordination with a preference for polar cis-OLi$_4$Fe$_2$ over non-polar trans-OLi$_4$Fe$_2$ configurations. This preference for polar cation configurations produces long-range disorder, in agreement with experimental data. The predicted short-range-order preference contrasts with that for a simple point-charge model, which instead predicts preferential trans-OLi$_4$Fe$_2$ oxygen coordination and corresponding long-range crystallographic order. The absence of long-range order in Li$_2$FeSO can therefore be attributed to the relative stability of cis-OLi$_4$Fe$_2$ and other non-OLi$_4$Fe$_2$ oxygen-coordination motifs. We show that this effect is associated with the polarisation of oxide and sulfide anions in polar coordination environments, which stabilises these polar short-range cation orderings. We propose similar anion-polarisation-directed short-range-ordering may be present in other heterocationic materials that contain cations with different formal charges. Our analysis also illustrates the limitations of using simple point-charge models to predict the structure of cation-disordered materials, where other factors, such as anion polarisation, may play a critical role in directing both short- and long-range structural correlations.

Nickelate materials offer diverse functionalities for energy and computing applications. Lithium nickel oxide (LiNiO$_2$) is an archetypal layered nickelate, but the electronic structure of this correlated material is not yet fully understood. Here we investigate the temperature-dependent speciation and spin dynamics of Ni ions in LiNiO$_2$. Our ab initio simulations predict that Ni ions disproportionate into three states, which dynamically interconvert and whose populations vary with temperature. These predictions are verified using x-ray absorption spectroscopy, x-ray magnetic circular dichroism, and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Ni L$_{3,2}$-edge. Charge-transfer multiplet calculations consistent with disproportionation reproduce all experimental features. Together, our experimental and computational results support a model of dynamic disproportionation that explains diverse physical observations of LiNiO$_2$, including magnetometry, thermally activated electronic conduction, diffractometry, core-level spectroscopies, and the stability of ubiquitous antisite defects. This unified understanding of the fundamental material properties of LiNiO$_2$ is important for applications of nickelate materials as battery cathodes, catalysts, and superconductors.

We present a detailed density functional theory based calculations of the structural, elastic, lattice dynamical, thermophysical, and optoelectronic properties of ternary semiconductors CaZn$_2$X$_2$ (X = N, P, As) in this paper. The obtained lattice parameters are in excellent agreement with the experimental values and other theoretical findings. These elastic constants satisfy the mechanical stability criteria. Moreover, many thermophysical parameters of these compounds are estimated, including the Debye temperature, average sound velocity, melting temperature, heat capacity, lattice thermal conductivity, etc. The comprehensive analysis of the elastic constants and moduli show that CaZn$_2$X$_2$ compounds possess reasonably good machinability, relatively high Vickers hardness and relatively low Debye temperature. The phonon dispersion curves and phonon density of states are investigated for the first time for the compounds CaZn$_2$P$_2$ and CaZn$_2$As$_2$. It is observed from the phonon dispersion curves that the bulk CaZn$_2$X$_2$ (X = N, P, As) compounds are dynamically stable. Electronic properties have been studied through the band structures and electronic energy density of states. The electronic band structures show that CaZn$_2$N$_2$ and CaZn$_2$As$_2$ possess direct band gaps while the compound CaZn$_2$P$_2$ show indirect band gap. The bonding characters of CaZn$_2$X$_2$ (X = N, P, As) compounds are investigated. Energy dependent optical parameters exhibit good correspondence with the electronic energy density of states features. We have thoroughly discussed the reflectivity, absorption coefficient, refractive index, dielectric function, optical conductivity and loss function of these semiconductors. The optical absorption, reflectivity spectra and the refractive index of CaZn$_2$X$_2$ (X = N, P, As) show that the compounds hold promise to be used in optoelectronic devices.

Predicting practical rates of ion transport from atomistic descriptors enables the rational design of materials, devices, and processes, which is especially critical to developing low-carbon energy technologies such as rechargeable batteries. The correlated mechanisms of ionic conduction, variation of conductivity with timescale and confinement, and ambiguity in the vibrational origin of translation, the attempt frequency, call for a direct atomic probe of the most fundamental steps of ionic diffusion: ion hops. However, such hops are rare-event large-amplitude translations, and are challenging to excite and detect. Here we use single-cycle terahertz pumps to impulsively trigger ionic hopping in battery solid electrolytes. This is visualized by an induced transient birefringence enabling direct probing of anisotropy in ionic hopping on the picosecond timescale. The relaxation of the transient signal measures the decay of orientational memory, and the production of entropy in diffusion. We extend experimental results using in silico transient birefringence to identify attempt frequencies for ion hopping. Using nonlinear optical methods, we probe ion transport at its fastest limit, distinguish correlated conduction mechanisms from a true random walk at the atomic scale, and demonstrate the connection between activated transport and the thermodynamics of information.

Solid-state ionic conduction is a key enabler of electrochemical energy storage and conversion. The mechanistic connections between material processing, defect chemistry, transport dynamics, and practical performance are of considerable importance, but remain incomplete. Here, inspired by studies of fluids and biophysical systems, we re-examine anomalous diffusion in the iconic two-dimensional fast-ion conductors, the $β$- and $β^{\prime\prime}$-aluminas. Using large-scale simulations, we reproduce the frequency dependence of alternating-current ionic conductivity data. We show how the distribution of charge-compensating defects, modulated by processing, drives static and dynamic disorder, which lead to persistent sub-diffusive ion transport at macroscopic timescales. We deconvolute the effects of repulsions between mobile ions, the attraction between the mobile ions and charge-compensating defects, and geometric crowding on ionic conductivity. Our quantitative framework based on these model solid electrolytes connects their atomistic defect chemistry to macroscopic performance with minimal assumptions and enables mechanism-driven 'atoms-to-device' optimization of fast-ion conductors.

In recent times, two dimensional (2D) ZnO has attracted a great attention in the field of nano-research due to its extraordinary electronic, thermal and optical properties. In this paper, we have explored the effects of halogen impurity doping such as F, Cl, and Br atoms on the electronic properties of 2D ZnO using first principles calculation. The pristine 2D ZnO exhibits a semiconducting behavior with a direct bandgap of 1.67 eV on the Γ point. However, when impurities such as F, Cl, or Br atoms are introduced, the 2D ZnO shows semi-metallic behavior with almost zero bandgap. It is perceived that, owing to the introduction of F impurity, the zero bandgap is exhibited at the K point of the electronic band structure. However, in the case of Cl and Br impurities, the nearly zero bandgap is observed elsewhere rather than on the K point. Moreover, due to the introduction of impurity atoms, the Fermi level also shifted towards the conduction band (CB) suggesting an increase of the carrier concentration in the density of states (DOS) results. These findings might be very much beneficial when doping effect, especially halogen impurity doping is considered to modulate the electronic properties of 2D ZnO in the near future.

Solid electrolytes for solid-state Li-ion batteries are stimulating considerable interest for next-generation energy storage applications. The Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ garnet-type solid electrolyte has received appreciable attention as a result of its high ionic conductivity. However, several challenges for the successful application of solid-state devices based on Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ remain, such as dendrite formation and maintaining physical contact at interfaces over many Li intercalation/extraction cycles. Here, we apply first-principles density functional theory to provide insights into the Li$_7$La$_3$Zr$_2$O$_{12}$ particle morphology under various physical and chemical conditions. Our findings indicate Li segregation at the surfaces, suggesting Li-rich grain boundaries at typical synthesis and sintering conditions. This approach can be extended to other Li-ion conductors for the design of practical energy storage devices.

First principles density functional theory (DFT) is used to investigate the electronic structure of β-MnO2. From collinear spin polarized calculations we find that DFT+U_Eff predicts a gapless ferromagnet in contrast with experiment which indicates an insulating antiferromagnet. The inclusion of anisotropic Coulomb and exchange interactions in the DFT+U approach, defining U and J explicitly, corrects these errors and leads to an antiferromagnetic ground state with a fundamental gap of 0.8 eV consistent with low temperature experiments. To our knowledge, this work on β-MnO2 represents the first demonstration of a case in which the application of fully anisotropic interactions in DFT+U determines the magnetic order and consequent band gap, while the more commonly used effective U approach fails. Such effects are argued to be of importance in many insulating materials. The mechanism leading to an increase in band gap due to anisotropic interactions is highlighted by analytical calculation of DFT+U d-orbital eigenvalues obtained within a Kanamori-type model. Magnetic coupling constants obtained by the fitting of a Heisenberg spin Hamiltonian to the energies of a range of magnetic states assist in rationalizing the finding that anisotropic interactions enhance the stability of the experimentally observed helical antiferromagnetic order. The plane wave PAW method yields poorer results for the exchange couplings than full-potential LAPW calculations. Finally, we compare the DFT+U results with exchange couplings obtained from hybrid functionals. It is argued that anisotropic interactions should be included in DFT+U if the results are to be properly compared with those from hybrid functionals.

An investigation of U2Ti, a potentially safe and heavy metal-based storage material for radioactive tritium for fusion reactor, has been performed using pseudopotential density functional theory. The analysis of the elastic constants and other moduli calculated for the first time shows large anisotropy on elasticity and brittle behavior. A quasi-harmonic Debye model, which considers the vibrational contribution to the total free energy of the system, has been used to investigate the finite-temperature and finite-pressure thermodynamic properties of U2Ti. The electronic band structure reveals metallic conductivity and the major contribution comes from U-5f states. By analyzing the optical spectra, the origin of the various structures is also explained in terms of the calculated electronic structure. Further the reflectivity spectrum shows that the material is perfect reflector within the energy range 8-12.5 eV.

Abstract:
We propose a new layered-ternary Ta4SiC3 with two different stacking sequences (α- and β-phases) of the metal atoms along c axis and study their structural stability. The mechanical, electronic and optical properties are then calculated and compared with those of other compounds M4AX3 (M = V, Nb, Ta; A = Al, Si and X = C). The predicted compound in the α-phase is found to possess higher hardness than any of these compounds. The independent elastic constants of the two phases are also evaluated and the results discussed. The electronic band structures for α- and β-Ta4SiC3 show metallic conductivity. Ta 5d electrons are mainly contributing to the total density of states (DOS). We see that the hybridization peak of Ta 5d and C 2p lies lower in energy and the Ta 5d-C 2p bond is stronger than Ta 5d-Si 3p bond. Further an analysis of the different optical properties shows the compound to possess improved behavior compared to similar types of compounds.

Despite significant progress in synthesizing several new molecules and many promising single device demonstrations, wide range acceptance of molecular electronics as an alternative to CMOS technology has been stalled not only by controversial theories of a molecular device`s operation, for example the switching mechanism, but also by our inability to reproducibly fabricate large arrays of devices. In this paper, we investigate the role of Casimir force as one of the potential source of a wide range of discrepancies in the reported electrical characteristics and high rate of device shorting in molecular electronic switching junctions fabricated by sandwiching a molecular monolayer between a pair of planar metal electrode.

Abstract:
In this paper we report studies on the correlation between the presence and distribution of cation vacancies in doped manganites (La,M)MnO3+delta (where M = Na, Ca) and their magnetic properties. Results indicate that cation vacancies are distributed differently for the different crystal structures and dopant ion type. In particular it is shown that knowledge of the total vacancies concentration…

In particular it is shown that knowledge of the total vacancies concentration alone is not enough to fully characterize the physical properties of manganites and that their distribution between the A and B sites of the perovskite structure plays a crucial role which should be taken into account in future studies.
