With the advancement of cybernetics, avatars, animation, and virtual reality, a thorough understanding of how the puppet metaphor originates from specific theatrical practices and media is especially relevant today. This book identifies and interprets the aesthetic and cultural significance of the different traditions of the Italian puppet theater in the broader Italian culture and beyond. Grounded in the often-overlooked history of the evolution of several Italian puppetry traditions – the central and northern Italian stringed marionettes, the Sicilian pupi, the glove puppets of the Po Valley, and the Neapolitan Pulcinella – this study examines a broad spectrum of visual, cinematic, literary, and digital texts representative of the functions and themes of the puppet. A systematic analysis of the meanings ascribed to the idea and image of the puppet provides a unique vantage point to observe the perseverance and transformation of its deeper associations, linking premodern, modern, and contemporary contexts.

A History of Italian Cinema, 2nd edition is the much anticipated update from the author of the bestselling Italian Cinema – which has been published in four landmark editions and will celebrate its 35th anniversary in 2018. Building upon decades of research, Peter Bondanella and Federico Pacchioni reorganize the current History in order to keep the book fresh and responsive not only to the actual films being created in Italy in the twenty-first century but also to the rapidly changing priorities of Italian film studies and film scholars. The new edition brings the definitive history of the subject, from the birth of cinema to the present day, up to date with a revised filmography as well as more focused attention on the melodrama, the crime film, and the historical drama. The book is expanded to include a new generation of directors as well as to highlight themes such as gender issues, immigration, and media politics. Accessible, comprehensive, and heavily illustrated throughout, this is an essential purchase for any fan of Italian film.

Contributi di: Gian Maria Annovi, Luca Barattoni, Fabio Benincasa, Fabrizio Cilento, Viviana Cois, Mark Epstein, Monica Facchini, Daniele Fioretti, Antonio Iannotta, Fulvio Orsitto, Federico Pacchioni, Anna Paparcone, Gloria Pastorino, Enrico Vettore.

“. . . as well as being a good idea in itself, Pacchioni’s ‘perspective’ works rhetorically to make possible an extraordinary density. A short book covers a huge amount of Fellini’s work in a penetrating way. Strangely, it isolates themes, motifs, and meanings from the films themselves, in the sense of endowing figures with meaning, but without their aesthetic insertion into the artistic artefact. In other words, the book throws enormous light on the components of Fellini’s films. And there is nothing wrong with this, when you reflect on the extent to which each film is an assembly of fragments—that is the way Fellini works. But the assembly is really successful—and this is where the ‘collaborators’ stop, and ‘Fellini’ himself takes over completely. He welds their disparate contributions into a work that is unified and ‘beautiful’, as well as meaningful. By not dwelling on this (though he does talk about it), Pacchioni lets the ‘contributions’ stand out, each with their identity. It is the films themselves that incorporate, absorb, digest the components, and Pacchioni’s critical activity is to undigest and tease out the threads, so that each character on the stage (each writer) receives his own spotlight. The reader, in his memory, reassembles the now enriched components.” –– Excerpt from Christopher Wagstaff’s review (University of Reading) in The Modern Language Review

Federico Fellini’s interest in paranormal and mediumistic phenomena has received very little critical attention. Fellini’s long-lasting collaborations with Nino Rota and Tullio Pinelli and his intense relationships with figures such as Ernst Bernhard and Gustavo Adolfo Rol help in tracing the flourishing of the director’s “voluptuous openness” (his own description) to the multiple dimensions of reality and the complexity of human life. Fellini’s adherence to esoteric matters is at the root of his talent for expressing spiritual mystery in his cinema, creating an atmosphere that blends memorably with Christian modes of storytelling in films such as La strada and that continues to find expression in a multiplicity of projects covering a wide array of spiritual experiences, including “Il viaggio di G. Mastorna” and “Viaggio a Tulum.” What makes the theme of esotericism in Fellini unique is its coexistence with an ambiguous and ironic tone, which is certainly the effect of this filmmaker’s comedic penchant and acute awareness of subtleties of artistic representation.

In providing an explanation for the cultural-aesthetic functions of the Italian puppet in the Italian-American cinematographic context, this essay weaves together historical notions on the role of the puppet (and Sicilian pupi in particular) in the Italian-American community, on the collaboration between puppeteers and filmmaker, and on the emotional and ritualistic power of the puppet. Analyzing films such as Francis Ford Coppola's Godfather Part II, the experimental film Tarantella by Helen De Michiel, and John Turturro's autobiographic documentary Rehearsal for a Sicilian Tragedy, this essay focuses on the cultural and cinematographic function played by the puppet in preserving and reinterpreting the Italian-American identity. The discussion also includes an American production such as I Am Suzanne!, where the Italian-American puppet channels negative stereotypes and anxieties towards the Italian immigrant.

"This bibliographical essay reviews key contributions to Pasolini Studies published in the US and Canada between 1989 and 2007. It presents translations, monographs, dissertations, book chapters, and articles highlighting general lines of inquiry and predominant thematic and ideological concerns. The survey begins with a brief discussion of the research carried out before 1989 and traces the history of the development of the field in North America. By drawing connections with a 1997 bibliographic analysis by Robert Gordon, this survey identifies certain epistemological and ethical idiosyncrasies of the field and points to possible root causes. This study concludes with a comprehensive bibliography.

This chapter makes a case for the integration of the puppet theater in the foreign language curriculum grounded in an acknowledgment of the art’s cathartic effect, its ability to engage and develop multiple intelligences and various skills, and the cultural value and uniqueness of its different traditional forms. The chapter begins with an examination of the literature currently available in support of this creative approach, identifying recurring themes and issues, and evaluating educators’ reflections vis-à-vis certain historic and cultural dynamics and influences. While the application of puppetry in education has almost always been considered with regards to primary and secondary school levels of teaching, a number of puppet theater techniques translate remarkably well into higher education, especially when teaching languages whose cultures present strong puppetry traditions, such as Italian. The final section of the chapter addresses the pertinence of puppetry to teacher training and curriculum development, exemplified by the case of Italian, both as a tool in the instructor’s lesson and in student-led productions.

More and more people are spending unprecedented amounts of time in virtual environments among which Second Life in currently the most popular and the fastest growing one. These online networking spaces provide people with opportunities for learning and practicing language skills in ways that are certainly less costly, more flexible, and some argue more engaging and powerful than most of mainstream classroom-based teaching today. Several universities have virtual representations of some of their campus facilities on SL, and some of them are going as far as initiating degree programs entirely and only on Second Life. Will a more flexible, personalized and more affordable education gradually take shape on virtual worlds and empty our physical classrooms? Do virtual worlds today offer educational potentials specific to Italian Studies and worthy of consideration? What role should teachers of Italian take in relationship to virtual worlds? Should a software such as Second Life be integrated into our regular teaching, and if yes, in what ways?

BlaxploItalian cleverly discloses the personal struggles classic Afro-Italian and African diasporic actors faced, correlating it with the contemporary actors who work diligently to find respectable and significant roles. More than an unveiling of history it is a call-to-action for increased diversity and esteem in international cinema. Italy’s medieval universities established the study of human anatomy for physicians. To heighten their art, Renaissance masters clandestinely examined anatomy through human dissection. The profound connection between art and science is best demonstrated by the genius of Michelangelo. Indeed, the wooden crucifix he carved in gratitude for secret access to corpses from a convent’s hospital still hangs in the Basilica of Santo Spirito in Florence. This talk will examine the nexus between art and science, and the history of anatomy education in the university.

The presentation discusses the cosmopolitan world of the “colonial theatre,” in particular the experiences of Italian performers in North and South America - an artistic tradition brilliantly evoked by Anna Magnani in the film Le Carrosse d’or by Jean Renoir. This presentation will focus on the work of Mimi Aguglia, an actress who left Sicily very young with the company of Giovanni Grasso, the main representative of the school of verismo (realistic drama). First touring Europe and then both North and South America with a contract similar to that signed by Eleonora Duse, Mimi Aguglia was granted a special train by the President of Perù, her own “carrozza d’oro”.

Italians first came to California in large numbers with the Gold Rush. While most found little gold, they did find a mother lode in farming, fishing, commerce and making wine. Finding the Mother Lode documents the experience of Italian immigrants in California, which was markedly different from that of their compatriots elsewhere in the United States. Through stories set in seven Italian communities throughout California, this film examines how economic and social mobility became possible for many Italians in the Golden State. It is also a look at how immigrant identity is maintained and transformed as immigrants become assimilated into mainstream America.

When American musicologist Alan Lomax came to Italy in 1954 to record Italian folk music he found an ethnomusicologist's heaven: dozens of musical traditions, ancient, unknown, and yet very much alive, scattered throughout the peninsula, mostly unrecorded on tape. He feared that radios and pop music would eventually wipe away such an astonishing legacy, and he had reasons to fear, but it did not happen to the extent that Lomax predicted. The best Italian pop music has often incorporated key elements of folk and traditional music together with obvious commercial and foreign influences. Even today, songwriters and musicians who work on the hybridization of Italian folk music are, possibly, Italy's best kept secret. This lecture will address classical composers who show interest in folk music (Luciano Berio), composers with a classical training who operate in the folk tradition (Giovanna Marini), folk singers who crossed over without forgetting their roots (Domenico Modugno), songwriters who blend folk roots and rock and roll (Fabrizio de Andre' and Francesco De Gregori), artists and groups that create a unique mix of Italian and World Music (Franco Battiato, Almamegretta, Faraualla).

ABSTRACT — Italy by Design is a long-term project based at Edinburgh and applying concepts from Decolonial and Intermediality Studies to the material success of the invention of Italy in the last 500 years. In this initiative, we see Italy as one of the most labour-intensive unsustainables of project Europe, and we invite participants — students, scholars, the general public — to rethink this powerful construct and signifier from the combined perspective of material studies and decolonial thought. Following the success of the guest speaker series pilot attached to the project, we are planning to launch the first fully public “Mini MAXXI: Radical Conversation on Material Culture” this autumn. As well as widening the project’s reach, Mini MAXXI 3 will bring together the 28 scholars whose work is being commissioned as part of the book proposal we are making to a North-American Press, our remit both individually and overall being the double perspective that opens up if we accept to have to call Italy both entangled (in its own specific materiality) and hooked (habit-formed, i.e., dependent on a unique form of subalternity). It is this complex dialogue — in progress as much as it is collaborative — that I want to explore further as part of my talk.
