The economic and financial history of Greece offers interesting in- sights into the current worldwide economic crisis. In the nineteenth, twentieth and twenty-first centuries, Greece went through a series of financial disasters due to external factors and to policies that failed to take fiscal stability into account, insofar as they relied heavily on foreign loans. These, in many cases, led to real bankruptcies. This article compares the attempted bailout by a British bank in 1893 with the salvage operation of 2010 that avoided the technical bank- ruptcy of Greece. Although the outcomes differed, owing to sharply different geopolitical and geo-economic contexts and to the amount of money committed to these financial operations, in both cases Greece relied on Europe to avoid impending financial disaster.

The crisis of the Ottoman Empire ended with the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. However, a long process of transformation of political, economical and social imperial structures drove to the foundation of the Turkish State as a European Secular State. The process of Europeanisation of the Ottoman Empire passed across the Tanzimat period - reforms made by the Ottomans during the XIX century - and the rise on power by the Young Turks - the nationalist movement from where Musfata Kemal Ataturk came out. The Kemalist reforms, almost all inspired by the European models of State, accomplished the nationalisation of the religious structures, the Turkish ethnic cleansing and the alliance between Turkey and the West.

Studying the origin of Turkey’s accession to the European Economic Com- munity enables a better understanding the problems that currently hamper EU-Turkey relations. In 1959, Turkish diplomacy submitted the request for Association with the EEC through one of the founding countries: Italy. The result was the 1963 Association Agreement, called the Ankara Agreement, that established from a technical point of view the opening of the European Common Market to Turkish goods, but symbolically it represented the prom- ise of a future full membership – which however has never arrived.

The crisis of the Ottoman Empire ended with the foundation of the Turkish Republic in 1923. However, a long process of transformation of political, economical and social imperial structures, carried out by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, led to the founding of a Turkish nation state, based on a European model. The process of Europeanisation of the Ottoman Empire ran through the Tanzimat period – reforms made by the Ottomans during the XIX century – and the rise in power of the Young Turks – the nationalist movement from where Atatürk had come. The Kemalist reforms, almost all inspired by the European models of State, accomplished the nationalisation of the religious structures, Turkish ethnic unity and the alliance between Turkey and the West.
