Macroinvertebrate communities and environmental variables were assessed in an Ankara Stream receiving high organic and industrial wastes. Environmental data were used to explain biological variation using multivariate techniques provided by the program CANOCO. The ordination method CCA (Canonical Correspondence Analysis) was applied to evaluate the relationships between environmental variables and distribution of macroinvertebrate genera. Data sets were classified by TWINSPAN (Two Way Indicator Species Analysis). In this investigation, macroinvertebrate communities have been shown by CCA ordination to be related to TOM (total organic matter), ammonia, cadmium, pH, lead, dissolved oxygen, conductivity (EC), phosphate, boron, nitrite and hardness, with TOM, ammonia, cadmium and pH emerging as the most significant environmental variables. Epeorus was a TWINSPAN indicator for the slightly polluted upstream site 1. Physa was a TWINSPAN indicator for the polluted downstream sites.
Key of larvae of 15 Simuliidae species reported from Western Turkey was prepared and their figures were also given.

ABSTRACT The limnological characteristics of Salda Lake, a deep, soda and highly alkaline lake in the Lake District of southwestern Turkey, are presented. Physical and chemical variables indicate that the lake is composed of hydrochemically different water layers formed by groundwater sources located on the floor of the lake. Phytoplankton and zooplankton are characterized by a limited number of species and low dominance reflecting the extreme conditions of the lake. Hydromagnesite stromatolites occur all around the lake margins. The lake is threatened by falling water levels and organic pollution. Recommendations for the conservation of the lake are presented. ABSTRACT 1. The Hirudinea species collected from sampling sites in various running waters (Yeflil›rmak River, Yedigöller National Park, Büyük Menderes River, Karadut Spring of Ac›göl Lake) and lakes (Ifl›kl› Lake, Beyflehir Lake and Karamuk Lake) in Turkey were evaluated with physico-chemical variables such as temprature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, nitrite, ammonium, orthophosphate, sulfate. 2. At the end of the study eight species were determined. These are Helobdella stagnalis (Linnaeus1758), Erpobdella octoculata (Linnaeus1758), Erpobdella testacea (Savigny 1822), Erpobdella vilnensis (Liskiewicz 1925), Dina stschegolewi Lukin 1960, Hirudo verbana Carena 1820, Limnatis nilotica (Savigny 1822), Haemopis sanguisuga (Linnaeus 1758). 3. Erpobdella vilnensis is the new record for Turkey. 4. It was observed that H. stagnalis is able to live in oligosaprobic/betamesosaprobic environment and also live in epipotamon part of the stream. 5. It was found that D. stschegolewi is able to live in alpha-mesosaprobic environment. 6. It was seen that H. sanguisuga is able to live in polisaprobic environment. 7. According to results of this study H. verbana is able to live in alpha-mesosaprobic environment in streams and it also lives in oligotrophic, mesotrophic, eutrophic and polytrophic lakes.

Ankara Stream and tributaries have been affected by agricultural pollution and wastewater from domestic and industrial sources. Accordingly, community structures of Simuliidae and other benthic macroinvertebrates were negatively affected by this pollution types. For this reason, it is very important to take the necessary precautions.
