The kabbalistic Ilan (diagram of the ten sefirot) appears in many forms and configurations in manuscripts throughout history. The different forms differ both visually and textually: visually in the ways in which the ilan is designed and the sefirot are organized on the page; textually in the selection of texts that the creators of the ilanot deliberately chose to implement in them. This phenomenon of combining text with a visual element, known as ‘icono-text,’ raises several questions: How should this object be ‘read’? Is there a certain order for reading it, and was it even meant to be read? This article offers initial directions for dealing with these questions by focusing on the ilanot related to R. Joseph Gikatilla, a Castilian Kabbalist active at the turn of the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
These ilanot are divided into three families. At the center of each family, we can identify a certain biblical character, which creates an internal narrative within the ilan itself. The first family includes ilanot that present King David at the center and describe his war against the demonic forces who seek to break into the holy realm. The second family includes ilanot where we find the figure of Jacob at the center, which display his confrontation with Laban and Esau. In the third family, we have ilanot in which Moses is placed at the center, which deal with questions such as learning the Torah and observing the commandments. The examination of the texts implemented in these ilanot allows us to establish a complete and coherent narrative in each of the groups and provides interesting directions concerning the role and purpose of the ilanot and their meaning in the eyes of their creators.

R. Yihye Bashiri’s book consists simultaneously of two literary types: it is a book of instruction for scribes for writing a Torah scroll, but it is also Introduction to Kabbalistic knowledge according to the arrangement of the Hebrew alphabet.
In this article, I would like to argue that the discourse on how to write the letters in the Torah reflects a discussion of the identity of the Jew in Yemen in the early seventeenth century. The unique Hebrew letter designed by Bashiri is in contrast to the Arabic letter form and is a version of the global Hebrew letter as it appears in the "Beit Yosef" of R. Joseph Caro.

Rabbi Isaac of Acre was one of the most important medieval Kabbalists. Aside from his famous statement regarding the revelations of the Zohar, Isaac of Acre composed several works, the best-known of which is his Meirat Einaim on Nachmanides’ Kabbalistic interpretations of the Torah. The current study addresses the formation of his lengthy composition Otzar Haim, which is organized thematically as an interpretation of Biblical, rabbinic, and liturgical passages based on revelations that Isaac of Acre had over the course of his life. This work, in its extant copies, is nebulous in form and lacks clear boundaries; multiple manuscripts contain material related to it. An analysis of these manuscripts reveals a discrete textual level of the composition: a series of passages the most unique feature of which is their chronological organization, complete with a record of the day and month in which each revelation occurred. In our estimation, these passages are the remnant of a more extensive diary of revelations that seems to have been lost, the contents of which had already been reworked by Isaac of Acre himself into his Otzar Haim. An appendix to the paper includes the complete texts of the passages that we have identified as belonging to this textual level of the composition.

Born in Amsterdam in the early seventeenth century, Moses Zacuto (Moshe Zacut) belongs among the most prolific Jewish figures of his time. He is best known for a wealth of creative work in a wide variety of fields: poetry and drama, halacha, as well as extensive Kabbalistic writings. Zacuto also had a special interest in magical manuscripts and the uses of divine names, which he collected into a lexicon known today as Shorshei HaShemot. Zacuto left Amsterdam while young and lived in Eastern Europe before moving to Italy. In this article, we demonstrate that Zacuto had already begun to construct this vast lexicographical project in Amsterdam, and that those beginnings are best understood against the background of the magical and Kabbalistic manuscripts available in early seventeenth-century Amsterdam.

Recent decades have witnessed a broad scholarly discussion of the cultural influences of the printing press Invention. The core of this revolved around the new technological influence on the concept of knowledge, its methods of dispersion, and on social changes that it engendered in the 16th century, when it became an affordable widespread technology. This article presents the way in which the spread of the printing press influenced conceptual paradigms of Kabbalists in general, and Lurianic Kabbalists from Sarug’s tradition in particular. These Kabbalists exchanged the traditional conception of creation as an act of writing, within the conception of the world as a written text, for conceptions of creation as a printing act and the world as a printed text. I show how the professional term ‘letterpress printing’ entered these Kabbalists’ descriptions of divine emanation, alongside their conceptualization of printing as a divine activity, as writing had been conceptualized previously.

Among the literary heritage left by Rabbi Sasson Shandukh, which includes moral literature, liturgical poems, halakhic literature and prominent Kabbalistic literature, are the unique Kabbalistic ilanot (rotuli “trees”) he created. The four long rotuli that he created that have reached us are the subject of this article. The kabbalistic ilanot of Shandukh are distinctive for their great length, their eclectic sources, for their interpretation of the Lurianic theory of emanation, and for their anthropomorphic representations of divine faces, drawn in accordance with the teachings of the famed Safed kabbalist R. Isaac Luria.

Midrash `Sgulat Israel` of R. Israel ha-Cohen is one of the important books of commentary written in Yemen in the seventeenth century. The book contains the traditional Yemenite knowledge of the Middle Ages (the allegorical interpretation of the Torah) as well as the Kabbalistic knowledge that was transferred in the seventeenth century from Europe to Yemen.
This article presents the versions of the book, the background of these versions, and the relationship between the various layers of interpretation that appear in the book.
The article shows that the author has a dual motivation. On the one hand, R. Israel works to anchor the kabbala's status in Yemen as new knowledge that has arrived and is not rooted in local thought, however on the other hand he is also seeking to preserve traditional knowledge in Yemen and ensures that this knowledge will not disappear or be forgotten with the arrival of the kabbala.

This article deals with the book of Rabbi Isaac Wanne "Rechev Elohim" (The chariot of G-d). Rabbi Isaac Wanne was a Kabbalist who lived in Yemen in the seventeenth century. The center of the book is a series of Kabbalistic diagrams, which create a map of the upper worlds, and serve as an orientation for the Kabbalists.
The book is based entirely on Kabbalistic knowledge that came to Yemen from Europe during this period. The article deals with the question of the influence of European knowledge on the kabbalistic culture in Yemen in general and on the visual kabbalistic culture specifically. I would like to show how Wanne sees himself as part of the European culture by interpreting the printed books that came to Yemen in his own way.

The paper addresses two themes that have not received the attention they deserve in the existing research: the presence of Kabbalah in Kurdistan and the transfer of visual Kabbalistic knowledge
between different cultures. It describes the way in which Italian visual objects were transferred to Kurdistan at the beginning of the
seventeenth century, how they were adapted to Kurdish culture, and
how they were then relocated and readapted following the immigration of Rabbinic Kurdish families to Bagdad. The article focuses on the work of two scholars from Kurdistan: R. Yehoshua b. R. David and R. Yehuda b. Pinhas. These two kabbalists created a kabbalistic ilan (literally: tree), a complex diagram consisting of drawings and texts and relating to the spheres of divine emanation. This article deals with the question of how Kabbalists in Yemen related to Kabbalistic knowledge that came from Europe throughout the seventeenth century. The article refers to the kabbalistic knowledge that had come to Yemen in printed books as a test case of the ways in which the local scholars coped with the changes that the knowledge world had undergone throughout the early modern period. The center of the discussion is a comparison between two Kabbalists: R. Isaac Wannah and R. Yisrael HaCohen.

This article deals with the important role of two kabbalistic diagrams (Ilanot) that were created by R. Moshe Chaim Luzzatto (Ramchal) at the beginning of the eighteenth century. The Ilanot are examined within the context of a treatment of visualization in Ramchal's intellectual world and, more broadly, in the kabbalistic literature in this period, including Sabbatean works. At the center of kabbalistic activity, Ramchal posits the kabbalist who “sees” the upper worlds; alongside to him are the kabbalists who attempt to reconstruct this vision. This reconstruction is facilitated by commentary, as well as by the visualization inscribed in the Ilan. In this way we may understand how the Ilan served as a tool for kabbalistic-prophetic activity, as well as the discourse of divine corporealization that developed in the circle of Luzzatto.
