The 60th International Academic Week held in early October 2022 in Tutzing gathered some forty scholars at various stages of their careers to discuss different forms and aspects of international return migration from various destination countries to the countries in Southeast Europe. We considered return migration of various kinds of migrants over time, and its consequences for society and culture in the countries of origin. Since the difference between migration and return is increasingly blurred and return takes on many guises, many contributions dealt with aspects of migration and its consequences rather than with return per se.

The author proposes to interpret messages addressed in the past few years to St. Mary, the mother of God, in the chapel of St. Mary of Lourdes in the church of St. Peter and Paul in Osijek, in eastern Croatia. Their specificity resides in the fact that they are written on chapel walls. Taking into account the specific means by which they are written - on a wall - and the specific contents which they exhibit - prayers addressed to St. Mary - the author first discusses the appropriate genre into which they can be ranged. She concludes that wall inscriptions from the Osijek chapel cannot be considered graffiti since they do not exhibit some of their characteristics: their receivers are not anonymous, they are not a result of opposition or of a wish to transgress, or to make up for the communication deficit of some segment of the population, and their content is different. The analysis and interpretation of 1000 wall inscriptions from Osijek is based on their transcription. Throughout the text they are being contrasted with prayers found in Trsat (a North Croatian pilgrimage center) and analyzed by the same author, and, where possible, with prayers from Thierenbach, a pilgrimage center in Alsace, analyzed by Genevieve Herberich-Marx. It is hypothesized that some characteristics of the Osijek inscriptions are linked to the means by which they are written. These are the pronounced anonymity of messages, the age of the population writing them - youth of High school age, and, linked to their age, the motifs of addressing Mary - mainly school problems, problems with partners, meeting somebody, etc. These motifs are in sharp distinction to the motifs presented in Trsat and Thierenbach (health, general help, happiness and protection predominate) where, presumably, people of middle and older age have left messages for St. Mary. The messages in Osijek are very concrete and specific: help is sought immediately and for a definite problem, e.g. to meet one's lover today; not to get a bad mark in the test to be written tomorrow. The author concludes that while to Trsat people come in organized trips and seemingly with no predetermined motives for prayer; to the Osijek church people come deliberately, to pray for a specific motif. The youth in Osijek are turned upon themselves for, in the majority of cases, they pray for themselves and not for other people, as was the case in Trsat. Nevertheless, a special category of prayers is identified in Osijek - prayers for all those who suffer -in villages, towns and Croatian regions struck by the 1991/92 war. Finally, prayers point to Mary's presence in people's lives as helper, savior, giver, protector etc. In quite a number of prayers people address themselves to God, attributing him the same powers as to Mary. St. Mary is not called Mary of Lourdes or of Osijek as is the case in Trsat and in Thierenbach, both important pilgrimage centers in which Mary is thought to be miraculous. This is explained by the ignorance of youth that the statue around which they write messages on chapel walls represents the miracle of Lourdes and by the fact that the statue has not proven miraculous among the inhabitants of Osijek. Regarding the differences and similarities of prayers in Croatia and in a French center, the author concludes that the main difference lies in the way Mary is called and addressed, but that otherwise, prayers from Trsat and Thierenbach have much more similarities than the prayers in two Croatian centers. The reason in all probability lies in the age of visitors and indirectly in the form of the prayer and function of the church.

The experiences of Croatian labour migrants who returned to their region of origin -south-western ?umberak and thereabouts - are being discussed. The research into return-ees' experience in this area is intertwined with the research into the consequences of the shift in political space and the creation of the international Croatian-Slovenian border. The returnees are mostly afflicted by the problems of a marginalized border population in a depopulated region, which is in a particularly delicate position due to the new state border.

This article proposes that the UNHCR-supported “durable solution” programs for former refugees from Bosnia and Herzegovina and from Croatia were at odds with the actual exilic experiences of former refugees. It introduce homemaking as an essential aspect of a successful durable solution and proposes supplementing the usual ethno-politicized understandings of home in the specific context with analyses of the process of homemaking at different scales—house (dwelling), community (the wider space of settlement containing natural, cultural, social, and economic aspects) and nation. The article also argues that repatriation and local integration in the country of first asylum—two allegedly distinct and opposite solutions to refugee crises—should be viewed as intertwined processes within a broader transnational context. It is concluded that their combination brought a durable solution to refugee predicaments in the specific case.

Though twenty-five years have passed since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, entrenched Cold War divisions remain in place on the European continent. One encounters still the notion of a European "East" that is different from the "West." It refers not to the geographic but the symbolic European "East," a former space of communist ideology and socialist societies. In geographic terms, it includes Central and Eastern Europe (from now on referred to as CEE, both in the adjectival and substantival form). Most of the former socialist countries in that area have joined the European Union, but this does not preclude the outdated notion of the "East" being widely used. The polarity "West"-"East" stands for many opposites: centre/core vs. periphery/margin, capitalism vs. former socialism (today post-socialist/post-communist space), democratic vs. undemocratic, developed vs. backward, modern...

Odgovarajuće narativne analize i interpretacije argumentirano i virtuozno uklapa u interdisciplinarni okvir etnologije i kulturne antropologije, demografije i sociolo-gije, političke, društvene i kulturne povijesti te povijesti znanosti. Unutar transnacionalne istraživačke paradigme autorica zadobiva i održava dugogodišnje povjerenje svojih brojnih kazivača, te analitički minuciozno rekonstruira mitove, narative i ideologeme o njihovoj privremenosti, povratku i (re)migraciji, a potom prezentira zaključke koji potiču na razmišljanje o životu i identitetima migranata i njihovih potomaka, posebice o dinamičnim procesima njihova uključivanja u društvo, bivanja, vezanosti i pripadanja, dvodomnosti i učestale mobilnosti u transnacionalnom socijalnom prostoru. Transfer znanja i iskustva u oba smjera S tehnološkom logistikom i vrsnim organizatorima lociranima u Zagrebu dvije nedavno održane konferencije na trenutak su izbrisale prostorne udaljenosti i vremenske zone na kojima diljem svijeta žive Hrvati i njihovi potomci. Riječ je o šestoj konferenciji Meeting Second Generation i o prvome Summitu udruge Crodiaspora. Tekst i foto: Jasna Čapo U listopadu i studenome održana su dva iznimno zanimljiva događaja po-svećena hrvatskom ise-ljeništvu i mogućnosti-ma njegova povezivanja s domovinom. Ujedno su re-alizirali istinski "globalni osjećaj mjesta", tj. osjećaj zajedničke pripadnosti i za-jedničkih interesa virtualno umrežene, a fizički raspršene globalne Hrvatske s raznih strana svijeta. Zajednička misija im je povezivanje i produbljivanje postoje-ćih kontakata, tj. umrežavanje Hrvata di-ljem svijeta i transfer znanja i iskustva u oba smjera.
