"How do children percieve the structure of the government or te Sarkar? Is the information presented in the civics textbooks - and the way it is presented - adequate for children to comprehend the nature and functions of these structures? Are these textbooks the only source of children's knowledge about these structures, or do they gather this knowledge from their
observations of the political life around them? Can textbooks handle these different knowledge elements?"

The article narrates a personal journey of learning and unlearning the images in school textbooks, its uses potentials and challenges as experienced by the author. It reflects upon the experiences of the process of selection of these images within the context of political science as a discipline. These experiences have been formed over a decade while working for Eklavya in Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan, and also at the NCERT in New Delhi. It locates changes in understanding the perspectives on political cartoons and posters as could be used in a school textbook. It also argues that there is a need to rethink ways in which cartoons are used in textbooks. Furthermore, it tells us something about the way political science as a discipline is taught in schools across India.

The use of cartoons as illustrations in National Council of Educational Research and Training’s (NCERT) Political Science textbooks has recently attracted attention from leaders across the political spectrum. Textbooks have been burnt and the government has set up a committee to inquire into the appropriateness of using cartoons in school textbooks. Unfortunately, it appears that there is a widespread lack of understanding about why cartoons should have been included in textbooks in the first place. It is often believed that the only purpose of a cartoon is to lampoon. Hence, it appears that in the NCERT textbooks, too, the cartoons were intended to mock and belittle. The job of textbooks is thought to be to simply lay down the truth according to the state. The fresh approach to using illustrations taken in the present NCERT social science textbooks, however, is largely unknown to many who express themselves vociferously and shrilly in the public sphere on the NCERT cartoon controversy.

Where do we locate the value of political education in our country, which has largely been imparted under the category of civics? Since textbooks are on possible site for finding answers, this study attempts to explore what textbooks talk about. At the same time, it draws elements from children’s everyday life and their own political understanding. When one synthesizes these

The central concern of the paper is an analysis of the definition and images of an ideal teacher that one gains while being trained in B.Ed programmes in India. The study explores this theme with the help of numerous student-teacher interactions, interactions with faculty members as well as textbooks (part 1) and other study material through which the author traverses. These interactions between student-teachers and teacher educators look into their experiences in the classroom, hostel life, teaching practice and assignments. These aspects have been contextualised and woven along with broader experiences and exposure that the author gained while working the field of education prior to the programme and the disjuncture that has come to permeate the ideals in teacher education programme. The paper uses these narratives to critique teacher education programmes as well as to highlight its stagnation. The data for this study emerged through detailed documentation while the author was a student, as well as through further discussions after the completion of the programme. ....

The central concern of the article is an analysis of the definitions and images of an ideal teacher that one gains while being trained in B. Ed. programs in India. The study explores this theme with the help of numerous student teacher interactions, interactions with faculty members as well as the textbooks and other study material through which the author traverses. These interactions between Student Teachers and Teacher Educators look into their experiences in the classroom, hostel life, teaching practice and assignments. These aspects have been contextualised and woven along with the broader experiences and exposure that the author gained while working in the field of education prior to the program and the disjuncture that has come to permeate the ideals in teacher education program. The paper uses these narratives to critique the teacher education program as well as to highlight its stagnation. The data for this study emerged through detailed documentation while the author was a student as well as through further discussions after the completion of the program. The paper also looks at a series of studies that emerge from teacher biographies, teacher educator’s research, analysis and studies on teacher education programs, along with a few discussions on the definitions of an ideal teacher.

Research Study with Eklavya. (unofficial abstract, bcz now this is being re- remembered)

What do children understand about government? How do textbooks attempt to provide a picture of the government? What do children know about the political activities from their social life? Where and why does the gap emerge between the social learning and textbook notions? What are the alternative ways of looking classroom teaching of civics? Why is it important to re- frame civics to political science?

Probably there are some answers.

Study analyses textbooks that were prescribed by NCERT and MP board for class 7 to 10, and that were in circulation prior to 2000 NCF.

Within education reflexive practice is highly emphasised. Often this burden of expectation lie with the teacher – rarely does other practitioner in education explore the territory. This essay partly attempts to summarise author’s experiences of working on school textbooks. It attempts to read questions that emerge from sociology of education perspective without necessarily providing an answer – it is partly aimed enabling the reader to unravel ways of analysing “hidden curriculum”.

Did a society that practice child marriage across all caste and religious groups till a century ago have a clear separation of Childhood or say Boyhood from the adulthood? The present research locates the arguments of a social reformer, BM Malabari, of the late 19th century, about three youngsters to narrate the fate of “nine tenth of Indians”. Using the imageries of these ‘boys’ - I attempt to expose the constructive process of the development of a modern childhood/boyhood, in India on the thin margins of debates in a social reform legislation under colonialism, the advent of other modern institutions like family, marriage legislations, schooling, etc. These observations are contrasted against the assertions in Sudhir Kakar's re-construction of the notions ‘Indian childhood’ as continuous, where he bases them on a variety of sources. Drawing from a variety of sources the last part of the article suggests the need to re-think the advent of modern childhood in India
