This chapter presents an overview of the development of historical narratives combining visual and textual elements in comic strips and graphic novels. History comics developed strongly during the 1940s and 1950s and became popular, in particular among young readers in Western Europe and North America. Having gained increased cultural respectability, comics more recently also obtained an adult audience. Two internationally renowned educational comics from the Anne Frank House, published in the first decade of the twenty-first century, illustrate how comics are nowadays capable of representing sensitive topics from recent history, in particular World War II and the Holocaust. Yet, combining fact and fiction requires a balanced way of (re)presenting, involving discussions among historians and others on what may be possible and desirable in this specific war of making history public.

In both Belgium and the Netherlands the historiography of the Second World War is well-established, strongly institutionalized, supported by a plethora of highly diverse local initiatives in museums, memorials and heritage centres and accepted as an essentially legitimate endeavour by the larger public, policy makers and funders.

Struggling with the past is a phenomenon that is not only reserved for states and politicians. On a personal level, too, it regularly illustrates how 20 century world history has left behind deep traces; traces that force us to reflect on this legacy and on how we relate to the past, making it meaningful in our contemporary existence. Nora Krug’s Belonging, the visual account of her migration from Germany to the US and, above all, of her subsequent engagement with her identity as a German, is an an attractive autobiographical book you don’t want to put down. But a graphic memoir that appears to be a critical and investigative non‐fiction publication, supplemented with some densely written pages with selected sources, deserves more transparent reflection on the applied perspective.

Parallel daaraan vormt ook de aanwezigheid van dr. L. de Jongs seriewerk Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog in talloze boekenkasten een goede graadmeter voor de interesse in deze historische episode. Digital history is a branch of digital humanities concerned using ICT to improve study of history. Linked Data pro-vides a way of effective enriched digital access to scientific texts about history (historiographies). In this paper, we present a method for connecting a historiographical text to the Linked Data cloud. We present the method and tools that we use in each of the method’s steps. We focus on one extensive case study: the enriched access of an important work of Dutch World War II historiography “Het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden in de Tweede Wereldoorlog”. We describe the digitization and present two sources of structured knowl-edge that link to individual text sources, retrievable on the Web of Data. The first is the manually constructed and highly curated “Back of the Book Index”. The second is a list of extracted Named Entities. We compare both struc-tured sources as stepping stones to the Web of Data and present a number of use cases relevant for both historical researche...

Hoe vertel je de beladen en gelaagde geschiedenis van een plek, en houd je tegelijkertijd de grotere geschiedenis van het nationaalsocialisme en de Tweede Wereldoorlog in het oog? Hoe balanceer je tussen informeren, herdenken en actualiseren? Het vernieuwde Nationaal Monument Kamp Vught, dat in november 2019 zijn deuren weer opende, is in deze lastige opdracht geslaagd. De oorlog wordt ingebed in een ruimer naoorlogs tijdskader, niet door volledigheid na te streven, maar door op individueel niveau en op afgewogen wijze verbindingen te leggen met situaties in het recentere verleden.

In Tonen van de oorlog staan de oorlogsmusea en herinneringscentra in Nederland centraal. Het is een verkenning van organisaties die qua professionaliteit, middelen en bereik zeer uiteenlopen. Zowel gerenommeerde instellingen als minder bekende éénmansmusea bepalen hoe de Tweede Wereldoorlog wordt verbeeld. Het in deze musea verzamelde erfgoed van de Tweede Wereldoorlog onderstreept het belang dat de Nederlandse samenleving aan deze historische periode hecht. Met de dynamische betekenisgeving en presentatie van oorlogserfgoed als uitgangspunt schetsen de auteurs hoe we de komende jaren kunnen nadenken over oorlogsmusea en hun collecties. Zij pleiten voor gezamenlijke discussie en voortgaande samenwerking tussen oorlogsmusea onderling, maar ook met andere erfgoedinstellingen buiten de eigen sector, wetenschappers en overige betrokkenen. Tien concrete aanbevelingen completeren Tonen van de oorlog.
