A nightmarish list of empirically proposed drivers affecting Information System (IS) adoption, and the limitation of measurements focusing their applicability in Latin America (LAT) economies is an issue. This causes uncertainty in the decision making process of which model and proposed drivers should be used to measure Successful Information System Adoption (SISA) in local public organizations, particularly in Public Ecuadorian Organizations (PEOs) as the focus case of the current study. Fuzzy QCA (fs/QCA), considered as a mechanism to evaluate empirical analysis based on qualitative approaches, was applied to reveal patterns of association across the set of 50 formed themes (as possible drivers), providing support for the existence of causal relations between these themes obtained from prevailing empirical literature and local primary and secondary sources. The Fuzzy logic of QCA applied in this study offers an easy way to systematically quantify various uncertainties in the selection of relevant themes as candidate drivers of SISA in local contexts and provides more realistic support to justify the decision.

Information Systems Adoption is a multi-faceted and complex investigation area that can cross disciplinary boundaries, combine multiple research methods and consider different methodological approaches to analyse emerging IS Adoption phenomena. In order to generate valuable and reliable outcomes a research methodology has to be carefully determined. A persistent concern of the IS discipline is choosing which research design and methodology is most appropriate for a particular study. This article uses the research into "Factors Affecting Information System Adoption in Public Organizations in Latin American Countries: The Case for Ecuador" as a practical illustration of the effective use of a pluralist methodology to investigate the reality of IS adoption in local government institutions. Moreover, new practical studies, evidencing that results obtained from a pluralistic approach can be richer and more reliable than one method alone, will contribute to the quality and success of IS adoption scholarly research.

ABSTRACT Lave and Wenger’s conceptualisation of communities of practice (CoPs) has had a profound impact on the way many think about learning at work. In universities, CoPs have the potential to meet the continuing professional learning (CPL) needs of academics in ways that formal structured programmes cannot. However, participating in CoPs can be a disempowering experience, depending on the way power is exercised within and outside of the community. Using narrative methods here, we explore the nature of CPL in a faculty-based teaching community of practice, paying particular attention to the links between the individual and extra-individual. Although all 15 CoP members interviewed for this study spoke of becoming more innovative and confident teachers since joining the community, noteworthy differences emerged in their descriptions of their engagement. Long-term and new members’ stories were qualitatively different: old-timers told stories of praxis, of personally transformative CPL that involved them in collective action in the wider socio-cultural context of teaching, while newcomers spoke of a more individualistic and pragmatic approach focused on professional survival. Implications for further research and practice are discussed.

This study aims to adapt the Expectation Disconfirmation Theory and Technology Adoption Model to unveil provocative roles in patients’ satisfaction cognitions and subsequent continuity behaviors pertaining to telemedicine services in rural Bangladesh. A quantitative research model is developed and validated using a two-staged deep neural network and partial least squares structural equation modeling approach. The findings of this study provide evidence that five salient determinants; expectations, disconfirmation, performance, usefulness, and ease of use dominantly contribute to predicting patients’ satisfaction concerning continuity with telemedicine. This contributes to health informatics and behavioral literature by clarifying the complex interplay between patients’ satisfaction and determinants of continuity behavior in telemedicine’s domain. The findings provide novel insights into predictions of complex patients’ attitudes toward telemedicine continuity, and dynamic changes in...

This chapter explores the potential of communities of practice (CoPs) in universities to foster academic identity and social learning through a critical, reflective account of a faculty-based teaching community of practice (T-CoP). This ‘T-CoP’ is situated in a multi-disciplinary, multi-campus business faculty in a large Australian university. Our chapter begins by situating the T-CoP within its disciplinary, faculty, institutional and national contexts, and explaining how and why we intentionally designed it in order to foster inclusion and shared ownership. Key findings from our ongoing critical participatory action research project conducted in, and with the T-CoP are interrogated in order to address the following three questions. Firstly, how can we develop leaders, and a practice of distributed leadership, appropriate to the work of CoPs in universities? Secondly, how might CoPs in universities counter the still dominant traditional paradigm of ‘professional development’ as acquisition, and encourage their members to move towards more transformational approaches to professional learning? Thirdly, how do we negotiate the tensions between the need for a CoP to develop its own distinctive identity as a community and domain of practice and yet remain open and accessible to new members?

The study focuses on usability provisions of learning management systems (LMS) in a corrective service organization. Under the influence of goal-directed interaction design principles in design science, the study outlines a new innovative artifact as a conceptual LMS solution that addresses the employee-centric learning model. The collective artifact represents relevant design knowledge assistive to meeting stakeholders’ contextual learning needs, for instance, demonstrating the potential significance of the developed mobile-based approach to support correctional officers in improving their learning on safety professional development. The paper concludes with a practical model that could be applied to assist correctional officers in their in-house training purposes.

Mobile commerce (M-Commerce) represents one of the important online trading platforms to meet the daily needs and requirements of many people in the trading perspective through a wide range of the smartphone applications. In the present day, smartphone devices, rather than being a luxury device, have become a basic essential requirement. So, many business enterprises seek to take advantage of this technology to communicate with their customers since a large proportion of smartphone customers use it in many different aspects of their life. For example, mobile internet access represents more than 65% of Internet users in Saudi Arabia. As M-Commerce sales increase gradually during the current decade due to the major revolution in smartphone technology, practical plans to help develop M-Commerce and the commercial applications of smartphones should be reconsidered in accordance with the `aspirations of communities and their wishes. The importance of this study is in determining the fund...

Purpose: This research aims to explore academics' readiness to use eLearning systems in Saudi Arabian higher education setting and develop an adaptable eLearning readiness model that can be used to measure organisational readiness for eLearning systems from academics' prospective. Approach: By utilising several theories, namely, UTAUT, IS- Success, and Satisfaction theory, this study examines the relationships between factors that contribute to the readiness of academics to use a new technology as a medium of instruction. The original constructs from the previously mentioned theories underpin the research model. Further, external factors were introduced to enhance the theoretical framework and contribute to the body of knowledge by exploring the possible linkages between factors. In addition, to generate the final research model, an explanatory study was conducted to investigate any further enablers or challenges that academics believe may enhance or hinder their overall rea...

Information Systems (IS) research continues to contribute to a long list of technology adoption factors from many studies conducted outside the Latin American (LAT) nations. These investigations fail to appropriate the context of IS adoption in LAT. This fail is mainly due to the geographical scope of existing studies. Those aimed at North America for example, are out of context regarding a diverse technological approach when applied to LAT. Further, uncertainty and an inability to predict outcomes of technology adoption, create variances in results because the local contexts are not considered. The reasons for this are unclear from existing studies. To detailed explore this problem further, a Qualitative Comparative Analysis (QCA) was applied to LAT economies, expecting to assess a refined set of drivers from existing technology adoption studies. A Fuzzy Logic process was used to refine these drivers. The research found that fourteen themes are candidates for future study purposes....

ABSTRACT A large segment of consumers prefer e-procurement because it provides several advantages such as a variety of options and lower prices. The business-to-consumer approach is spreading on a global scale, but its role is limited in countries such as Saudi Arabia due to the size and strength of the economy. Saudi Arabia has the fourth highest level of economic growth in the Middle East and ranks 38th globally in terms of Internet infrastructure. Its rate of Internet growth is 12% yearly, and 40% of the population has access to the Internet. The volume of online trade in Saudi Arabia was USD 800 million in 2012, and 56% of this amount was for purchases through foreign websites. The end consumers are one of the most important target segments of small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which constitute 90% of Saudi Arabian companies. These companies face limitations in establishing e-procurement channels because these channels require financial support beyond their funding capabilities. Therefore, one of the best low-cost solutions is the adoption of e-Malls, which provide various benefits to consumers and are a suitable environment for SMEs to present and sell their products. The e-Mall is a modern idea in Saudi Arabia; thus, it could be beneficial to adopt the diffusion of an innovative approach to the spread of e-Malls. This article focuses on determining the requirements and obstacles facing consumers who make purchases through e-Malls. A quantitative survey was conducted on a random sample of 381 residents of all ages in Saudi Arabia who had made online purchases. The main factors influencing the adoption of e-Malls were organisational, technical and cultural elements.

This case study details how and why integrating storytelling, empathy, and inclusive practice shifted QSuper, a large Australian finance organisation, from minimal awareness to moral awareness then moral capability in the delivery of services to Indigenous customers. During the Royal Commission into Misconduct in the Banking, Superannuation, and Financial Services Industry, QSuper were recognised for their exemplary service with Indigenous customers (Hayne, Interim report: Royal commission into misconduct in the banking, superannuation and financial services industry, Volume 1. Commonwealth of Australia, 2018; Transcript of Proceedings, 13 August, Commonwealth of Australia, 2018). This position was in stark contrast to the inaccessible service offerings of other financial organisations where some used predatory practices to sell unethical financial products to Indigenous Australians (Hayne, Interim report: Royal commission into misconduct in the banking, superannuation and financial...

Environmental enterprise systems (EES) are an emerging type of integrated enterprise-grade software developed for environmental sustainability. This paper reports an exploratory investigation into the use and value of EES based on case studies of an EES vendor, four organisations that have adopted EES and an organisation that has yet to adopt EES in Australia. Two levels of EES usage are found: basic and advanced (in a relative sense). The basic level spurs the development of EES best practice and systemic competence in terms of environmental data capture, integrated energy, waste, emission and water database and ability to generate different reports with ease and high level of quality, thereby leading to environmental operational value. The advanced level, however, goes beyond basic EES affordances, to create EES-enabled distinctive capabilities such as innovation in terms of energy optimisation of assets, risk management and analytics for achieving environmental strategic value. This paper presents an abridged version of a fictional story titled ‘Is this OK?’, a story about a day in the life of an individual in a non-specific future. It was written as a teaching aid to help students critically engage with theory, as experience has taught the authors that students ’ engagement with conventional academic articles is prob-lematic. There are three principal theories that inform the story, notwithstanding that the piece also alludes to other contemporary issues and a reader is likely to identify the influence of a variety of theoretical constructs. The three are natural capital, com-panies selling solutions rather products or services and a construct of humans as being a temporal negotiation between their genetic material and the environment they find themselves in. The first two concepts are, as the article discusses, encap-sulated within but not limited to the concept of natural capitalism. The third draws on a construct of a human as being a phenotype. It sho...

The conceptualisations of the construct of relative advantage within the extant literature on technology adoption do not provide adequate conceptual views of the construct in the context of individuals’ adoption of online e-government services when compared to the brick-and-mortar service method. To address this issue, the current research thesis developed context-specific and comprehensive conceptualisation of the construct of relative advantage. To achieve this objective, the current work (1) conducted a study including two waves of data collection with the goal of deriving the sub-dimensions of relative advantage to be included in the conceptualisation of this construct, (2) confirmed the importance of including these sub-dimensions based on theoretical rationales and findings of prior literature, and (3) developed and validated a multi-dimensional scale to measure the construct following the 10-step procedure prescribed by MacKenzie et al. (2011). To articulate the conceptual do...

This study is focused on Information System adoption in Latin America (LAT), and it is based on the adoption outcomes of Public Ecuadorian Organisations (PEOs). Information Systems (IS) adoption is a multi-faceted and complex field where the use of innovative technology does not guarantee adoption success. This is evident from the numerous theories and a nightmarishly long list of empirically proposed drivers suggested for IS adoption studies in general. However, notwithstanding the abundance of adoption studies in developed, western economies, there is limited research on their applicability in Latin American economies, causing uncertainty regarding the suitability of established adoption success measurements there. The objective of the current research is to identify a set of the most feasible candidate drivers affecting Successful Information Systems Adoption (SISA) in LAT and to put forward an adoption model based on the adaptation of existing theories. The candidate drivers are...

In Saudi Arabia, although some m-government services and applications have been released, m-government is still in its infancy. To date, there have been insufficient empirical studies to (i) identify and measure the factors that influence users' intentions to use m-government applications in Saudi Arabia, (ii) measure the Saudi citizens' attitudes towards using m-government applications, (iii) measure the influence of three moderators (gender, age and usage experience) on relationships between independent factors—attitude toward use (ATU), perceived usefulness (PU) and perceived trustworthiness (TRU)—and the dependent factor behavioural intention to use (BIU), and (iv) validate and examine the applicability of the modified Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) to determine the above factors in the Saudi m-government context. Consequently, the main aim of this study is to identify and measure factors that influence users' intentions to use m-government applications in Saudi A...

Technological innovations have great impacts on higher education. In recent years, higher educational institutes have been replacing, or supplementing, the traditional face-to-face course delivery with electronically-mediated teaching in their programs (Garrison & Kanuka, 2004; Stoltenkamp, Kies, & Njenga, 2007). While the use of electronically-mediated teaching is increasing in higher education, the institutions have been facing complexities and challenges in academic staff engagement. This study used an action research approach to develop a model to motivate staff to be engaged in e-Teaching environments. The researcher role was a consultant in an e-Learning training centre in Saudi Arabia. This centre helps universities in Saudi Arabia to engage their staff in e-Teaching. While working collaboratively with a team from that centre and by reviewing the literature, the researcher has proposed a model to engage staff in e-Teaching for three female Saudi Arabian universities according...

This paper presents the argument that the use of wikis in a learning environment involves a different way of thinking, learning and knowing than perhaps many practitioners are familiar with. In particular, wikis foster collaborative, egalitarian learning that is designed to foster group interaction instead of just individual performance. Moreover, wiki based learning involves community ideals and challenging modes of interaction for both learners and instructors. The paper begins by summarising the wiki way of learning. It presents a recent study conducted in a classroom environment into how students conceptualised wiki use and uses a case study of a course in mobile workforce technologies to present the basis for a wiki pedagogy. The paper concludes with a discussion on the both the practical and theoretical implications of using wikis in a tertiary education environment.

This study investigates health seekers’ acceptance and adoption determinants of telemedicine services in a rural public hospital setting in an emerging economy using an adapted, extended Technology Acceptance Model. The present study pursued synthesising a plethora of existing literature and contextualised the significance of seven broad categories of potential determinants that significantly affect patients’ acceptance and adoption intentions: perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use, self-efficacy, service quality, privacy and data security, social influence, and facilitating conditions. The partial least square structural equation modeling technique was employed to test the conceptual model and research hypotheses. A cross-sectional survey was administered among 500 telemedicine users in randomly selected rural and remote areas of Bangladesh. Excluding self-efficacy and ease of use, five determinants expressively contributed to patients’ acceptance of telemedicine adoption, ex...

The rapid evolution of technology along with the availability of relevant information and knowledge are key drivers for increasing productivity and improving standards of living and economic growth. The Internet revolutionised how organisations operate and perform around the world; it is used in multiple ways, including sharing information, communicating information, providing information, obtaining information, and collaborating with others. One application of the Internet nowadays is electronic commerce (e-commerce). Entrepreneur could benefit from e-commerce technologies to run the business in a cost-effective and efficient way. This paper seeks to study the impact of social influence on entrepreneurs attention to use e-commerce technology in Saudi Arabia context using TAM..

Abstract. Organisations are increasingly leveraging improved decision making processes during the establishment of project teams. Beyond the obvious advantages of accessing qualified, cost-effective project staff, the issues of sustainability and governance are addressed when the virtual teaming approach is used. Projects can proceed without people needing to travel to a co-located work-place, thus saving time, effort and expense while creating less environmental pollution. But there is a governance problem; running virtual projects, particularly complex projects involve a greater degree of difficulty than managing co-located projects. What is needed are effective, practical methods for managing virtual projects. This paper introduces a new Reference Model of Organisational Behavior (RMOB) for the Leadership of Complex Virtual Teams which is arguably an effective way to meet the challenges of virtual teaming. This paper also discusses the new issue of sustainable leadership with men...

A Feral Information Systems (FIS) is any technological artefact (e.g. spreadsheets) that end users employ instead of the mandated Enterprise System (ES). ES proponents suggest that the installation of an ES will boost productivity. However, Production Possibility Frontier theory provides insights as to why the introduction of an ES may instead suppress an end user's productivity. Structuration Theory offers insights that explain how certain end users may have access to powerful resources. Rather than submitting to the ES, the end user can employ FIS to block or circumvent aspects of the ES. Further, the concept of life chances helps explain why individuals may or may not develop the core skills required to construct an alternate to the ES, the FIS. In relation to the ES usage, an end user may adopt one of four Modes of Operation, namely: Submit, Dismiss,

Deep and shallow learner approaches are useful for different purposes. Shallow learning can be good where fact memorization is appropriate, learning how to swim or play the guitar for exam-ple. Deep learning is much more appropriate when the learning material present involves going beyond simple facts and into what lies below the surface. When students are asked to think about how facts are created and what they mean, then deep learning is needed. Deep learning requires students to think about the conceptual material used to construct a theory and to reflect on its meaning until they understand and can reconceptualise the item under study. Some forms of learning are more conducive to approaches that do not need deep reflection, although this process invariably brings greater learning potential. This paper outlines a course that was considered by the authors to be ‘scrugged’. The word scrugged is defined as ‘rough ’ as in “it’s been a scrugged day. ” This word arose in a teaching and...

This research identifies factors affecting the operation of a supply chain in a large, asset rich transport utility, and how a recent Enterprise Resource Planning System (ERP) implementation was perceived with respect to its usability for the task. A lack of trust in the ERP, ineffective training methods and complexity in extracting the data from the ERP were identified as a problem which lead to the development of “Feral Systems ” (systems outside the accepted ERP or corporation condoned information systems – sometimes called skunkworks). This research uses an interpretative case study approach to gain insights into the human sense-making within the study organisation. The research argues that power relationships between operational managers and financial managers and processual power relationships between operational managers led to the development of these systems. Key words:- Enterprise Planning Systems, Power, Feral Systems

The focus of this paper is the development of a capstone management course and the application of educational action research through continual learning. In this article, we use the continual learning frame of plan, do, study, and act to underpin an educational action research design on the development of a capstone management course. As part of an Active Learning Trial, the development of the capstone experience has been captured in the embodiment of that experience. Our aim is to guide other academics in developing their own capstone course, particularly, within management with extension into other disciplines. Through continual improvement, we stress the importance of integrating the primary voice of the students, to emphasize the active learning and to optimize a meaningful experience in connecting theory to practice – the key to the capstone experience. Examples of how to gain feedback and integrate classroom improvements are given. To do this we present two cycles where we app...

SAP is a major ERP Package that requires no introduction and research into the area is widespread and well reported. However, more and more reports are emerging of the failure of SAP as a package to meet the needs of business. This paper looks at the research of SAP for evidences of systematic research biases to see if that is the cause for such implementation failure being missed. A comprehensive literature search on SAP papers was undertaken with some alarming results showing a disturbing uncritical and possibly biased perspective from SAP Research literature.

Decision-problem structuring is conceptualized to be a process comprising activities characterized by the students. The activities are cognitive efforts of a group coming to an understanding and determining the representation of the decision-problem and of what knowledge is relevant to the decision-problem. Cognitive effort refers to the fraction of limited attention with respect to resources that are momentarily allocated to a process. The consensual representation of the decision-problem provides the basis for modeling those activities in some form and order. Knowing how a decision-problem is structured by students based on Management Information System domain will enable the modeling to be based on a simple descriptive behaviour in problem structuring. One such method would be a mathematical model to quantify the problem which ultimately becomes well-structured.

Through innovations in technologies, electronic commerce (EC) has evolved into a new stream of commerce called social commerce (SC). This paper defines SC as a combination of performing EC activities and socializing on online communities via facilitating technologies to make purchase decisions. SC adoption has recently gained attention among interested scholars; yet, since SC is a new technology, studies are limited. The current research gap is twofold: First, no studies have yet examined the impact of government involvement on SC adoption. Second, the impact of social factors (e.g. social support and electronic word of mouth) on SC adoption in the Saudi Arabian context has not yet been investigated. This in-progress research aims to provide guidance to interested stakeholders on how to encourage consumers to adopt SC in Saudi Arabia. The study uses the theory of planned behaviour, along with other external factors, as a theoretical model.

E-government initiatives in Saudi Arabia are still in their infancies, although there has been progress in the implementation of this project. This paper seeks to identify service users’ current attitudes towards e-government initiatives in Saudi Arabia to determine whether there has been a shift since the previous research using TAM. In other words, it seeks to identify acceptance level. Theoretical framework is TAM constructs: perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, attitude toward usage and behavioural intentions to use and addition one external variable is usage experience. Main goal of this paper is identifying acceptance level of users for e-government initiatives in 2014. Keywords— E-government, TAM, Saudi Arabia, IS.
