Contemporary document research involves the need to use the latest technologies and analytical techniques that provide the most complete possible knowledge of contemporary issues and methods of document research. Documents are used to record legal actions and events of legal significance. By their essence, they are therefore closely related to the sphere of rights and obligations of a specific person or institution. Crimes against documents pose a threat to the proper functioning of the state and thus the development of every enterprise. They affect, directly or indirectly, the misallocation of financial resources at the disposal of an enterprise. Forging documents may be aimed at obtaining unauthorized access to specific sources of financing, influencing key management decisions made in the company, or, finally, concealing inconvenient facts. On the other hand, the social harm suffered as a result of forging documents of evidence significance in tax matters may be enormous. For thi...

This paper, having traced the evolution of anti-money laundering legislation, defines and frames money laundering and terrorism financing risk inside corporate dynamics. Principles that must inspire corporate actions on the construction of an adequate managing structure to contain risks are set out, considering the fact that there is no risk that this does not have an economical content. This is even truer in the presented case, given that the Italian legislation to counter money laundering is focused on the innovative and modern risk-based approach, which has to guide the organization and functioning of corporations. Possible configuration of corporate anti-money laundering supervisions is therefore analyzed, with the aim of underlining the present connection between anti-money laundering legislation and rules referring to the government and to the internal control system. The present study originates from the interpretation of the new Italian anti-money laundering law. In particul...

PurposeThis paper investigates the income dynamics of Italian primary sector, during and after the international economic crisis. It focuses on three research questions: what has been the evolution of the main profitability ratios of agricultural enterprises in recent years? After the crisis, have the surviving farms increased their profitability? Has the profitability been different also in relation to the geographic location?Design/methodology/approachIncome dynamics of a sample of companies have been analyzed, obtaining the 10-year evolution of the average value of three income indices (return on equity [ROE], return on assets [ROA] and return on sales [ROS]). Statistical elaborations and the analysis of variance (ANOVA) method have been used.FindingsThe years of the international economic crisis are often characterized by higher incomes than the following ones. The descending trend involves all three national macroareas of Italy, although characterized by considerable socioecono...

The aim of this paper is to investigate, through financial-statement analyzes, the economic-financial performance of Italian hotels, after the international economic crisis, also considering the possible macro-regional differences. The study focuses the financial statements of 5473 hotels from 2009 to 2018. National data are also disaggregated in the three macro-areas that characterize Italy for different social and economic aspects. Anova test and Tukey–Kramer test are used. Results show that the crisis affected profitability. Italian hotels have a low capitalization, unable to cope with the large structural investments that require significant debts. The profitability indicators record similar trends in the three macro-areas, while the financial independence index and the coverage index show significant different values in the three observed areas. Therefore, in the digital era, Italian hotel industry has all the potential to restructure itself. Here five ratios are considered to observe medium sized hotels. Future research with other variables will be useful, even on smaller hotels, and the analysis of their trends by cohorts of companies is necessary, as well as the integration of quantitative data with qualitative evidence. This paper encourages the culture of temporal sector comparison, re-evaluating the potential of accounting information systems, in order to promote data-based growth and development strategies. Furthermore, it contains indications for government officials, as well as for countries in the process of developing the hospitality sector following the example of the Italian experience.

The latest issue of the Journal of Governance and Regulation has been published. The need to govern phenomena is strongly felt in a world where uncertainty, crises, and failures are no longer extraordinary. This issue explores governance in several areas of investigation: governance in private companies (corporate governance), in public administrations (public governance), and the implications and new challenges for international institutions and bodies (global governance).

Society has not only a right to know: in contemporary democracies, there is also a right to participate in the life of public institutions. A representation of a judicial accountability aware of this is provided in this article. This research describes, by analyzing the latest social and sustainability report of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Naples, possible points of contact between reporting and citizens. The results are still not satisfactory: stakeholder engagement often remains only an appreciable attempt. However, despite gaps and uncertainties, the report goes beyond mere descriptive narrative. Innovative elements that suggest a new season for reporting in the judicial sector are present, such as the reconstruction of the economic and financial values in a prospective key, in order to arrive in the future to study the impact on society of the efficient functioning of judicial offices. Finally, this study offers some ideas for rethinking the Italian Judiciary in a sustainability key.

In the last years Italian economy has suffered from the heavy consequences of the global economic crisis, which have concerned both the system of production and the banking system. Taking into consideration the fact that banking crises are a relevant phenomenon not only for the involved credit institutions, but for the whole economic and financial system, this paper deals with the case of the People’s Bank of Vicenza. This is a peculiar case study because the matter of this bank has seen the involvement of many public actors: the Italian Government, the European Commission, the European Central Bank, the Bank of Italy and Consob. Regardless of all these attentions, the history of the People’s Bank of Vicenza is one of irregularities and management deficiencies generated by the great weakness of the governance, which worsened inside-the-bank imbalances, as intended by the doctrine according to which the root reason for every disruption can always be found in the lack of management sk...

PurposeThe paper aims to reach a better understanding of accountability and social reporting in the Italian justice system, by examining the state of the art of both literature and practice. The case study highlights the critical elements in drawing up the social report of one of the most important Prosecutor Offices in Italy.Design/methodology/approachThe case study analyzes the activities of the actors involved in the report building process by detailing all the steps involved in a research diary, in order to examine such process from the inside, thus reversing its perspective.FindingsThe study shows that both the lack of guidelines for judicial administrations and a consolidated trend of transforming administrative facts into documents useful to stakeholders slow down the evolution of practices, which are stuck in a perpetual trial stage.Research limitations/implicationsThe limitations are mainly related to the adoption of a single case study, which does not include any compariso...

Italy is undoubtedly a leading country in Europe in terms of number of tourist facility rooms and it is the European country with the greatest attraction for non-EU tourists. One of its southern regions, Campania, to which this study is dedicated, summarizes the extraordinary natural, seaside and hillside attractions that offer the possibility of relaxation, cultural, religious and food and wine routes. The research analytically describes, through balance sheet data taken from the AIDA database, the consistency of the Campania receptive offer, focusing on the dimensional developments of 494 tourism companies in the period from the global financial crisis of 2008 to 2017. The results demonstrate the modest size of the sample companies, with differences due to the geographical and territorial peculiarities of the five provinces considered, as well as some downsizing following the international economic crisis.

Although digitization and digital transformation are radically changing the organization and behavior of companies (Collin, Hiekkanen, Korhonen, Halén, Itälä, & Helenius, 2015), scientific research has only marginally combined these issues with that of leadership. In order to pursue a customer-centricity vision, digital leaders have integrated the most advanced technologies (intelligent automation, artificial intelligence and machine learning) into their organizations and processes in order to improve the usability of the data that allow a digitalization of products and services. Therefore, digital technologies are like “enabling factors” to satisfy customers’ demand for innovative products and services (Lancioni, 2005). In this regard, traditional companies need to identify adequate technological partnerships in order to govern the digital transition (Aguiar, Bogea Gomes, Rupino da Cunha, & Mira da Silva, 2021). To this end, a continuous IT audit is necessary in order to intercept ...

Board decision-making is a complex process. It is represented by reasoning for choosing the most suitable alternative within a series of options for the operation of the corporation. In practice, strategic decision-making is an important function of the board of directors, especially in the information age. Although there are various determinants of the board for carrying out decision-making, there has been little research concerning the impact of information technology (IT) governance wisdom on board decision-making. This study seeks to investigate the origin of IT governance and analyze IT governance wisdom from the perspective of the philosophical thinking of The Art of War. The analysis indicates that the concept of IT governance must have been produced no earlier than the late 1990s, highly likely at the beginning of the 21st century. In addition, this study presents the results of qualitative field research of a Chinese information and communication technology (ICT) company wh...

Purpose This study offers a focus on the income dynamics of the sector, analyzing the evolution of the main profitability indicators (ROE, ROA, ROI and ROS) of 457 Italian companies in the 2008–2020 period. So, it is possible to verify the reactivity to the global financial crisis that began in 2008 and the first indications on the 2020 pandemic. Design/methodology/approach The analysis uses descriptive statistics tools and the ANOVA method of analysis of variance completed by Tukey's test, useful for identifying the existence of significant differences between geographical macro-areas of the country. Findings The results show positive dynamics in a sector that has been able to absorb the negative consequences of the great global crisis, improving its profitability over the years, albeit with differences in the macro-regions of Italy. Research limitations/implications The study considers only the companies that survived the crisis, so, presumably, the strongest. In the future, o...
