Despite recent developments in clean energy, microgrid advancements, and power electronics, the present power system continues to face plenty of issues arising from its integration. Interference with other components of the system can create a change in input voltage, which can harm sensitive equipment. Harmonics, voltage sag, & swell themselves can harm the sensitive machinery. A Dynamic Voltage Restorer (DVR) is an equipment that is extensively used in distribution grids to address sag, swell and harmonic issues. Simultaneous simulations of the recommended DVR-based approach in MATLAB/Simulink were carried out to show its efficacy in normalizing voltage profile and harmonics.

The objective of this paper is to provide a solution to the accidents that takes place at un-manned railway crossings of Indian Railway, with the application of laser n sensor and comparators. Most of the accidents are due to negligence of rules. We are here describing a way to tackle this problem with LASER and PHOTO-SENSOR to make a signalling system which indicates an approaching train. This will reduce the loss of precious life and costs very low to be installed in any un-manned crossing.

This paper studies the problem of Reflective Thinking in children during mathematics related problem solving activities. We present our approach in solving task 2 of the AffectMove challenge, which is Reflective Thinking Detection (RTD) while solving a mathematical activity. We utilize temporal data consisting of 3D joint positions, to construct a series of classifiers that can predict whether the subject appeared to possess reflective thinking ability during the given instance. We tackle the challenge of highly imbalanced data by incorporating and analyzing several meaningful data augmentation techniques and handcrafted features. We then feed different features through a number of machine learning classifiers and select the best performing model. We evaluate our predictions on multiple metrics including accuracy, F1 score, and MCC to work towards a generalized solution for the real-world dataset.

This paper presents an approach to estimates the health of capacitor connected in solar power applications using wavelet transform. In the approach, voltage and current waveform are analysed using wavelet transform. The characteristics of the voltage and current waveform under continuous conduction mode (CCM) and discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) are modelled using multiresolution analysis by wavelet transform. A relation is developed between wavelet coefficients of voltage and current waveforms for estimating the equivalent series resistance (ESR) of a capacitor. The simulation results show small error in estimation of the capacitor ESR. Further, the approach uses waveform analysis in estimating capacitor health; hence, the method is simple over the current injection method for estimation ESR.

Centrifugal pump is one of the most widely used devices to transport fluids in industries and buildings. A lot of research has been carried out to make it more efficient. With the development of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD), the parametric study of a centrifugal pump has become much easier and the complex internal flow can be well predicted to expedite the pump design procedure. The primary objective of this work is to analyse the effect of trailing edge angle of three twisted blades of a radial flow impeller on the hydraulic performance of an impeller using three-dimensional steadystate analysis with the help of commercial CFD software Ansys- 14.0. In this analysis, three impellers are modelled using Ansys BladeGen tool with different trailing edge angles 16, to 27degrees keeping the blade wrap angle constant. The calculations are performed only on the impeller. Three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved by adopting k turbulence model, using finite vol...

This paper focuses on the study of hybrid powertrain circuit and important subsystems of a solar electric hybrid bus to reduce the manufacturing cost, operating cost and emissions. The powertrain circuit of solar hybrid bus has been designed and analysed comprehending the addition of solar panels in the powertrain and the increased weight due to the same. Use of hybrid technology reduces the emissions up to 30-35% but with solar energy, emissions can be reduced up to 55%. Comparison between petrol, diesel and CNG is done to justify the use of CNG as the engine fuel. Comparisons are also carried out between Monocrystalline and Polycrystalline solar panels and the one with the more efficiency and power to weight ratio is selected i.e. Monocrystalline solar panels. Monocrystalline panels produce 120180 Watt per meter square against 50-80 Watt per meter square of power produced in case of Polycrystalline panels. Ambiguity in the use of either Ni-MH or Li-ion battery in hybrid buses is r...

This thesis aims to manage information exchange at the case company by designing an information exchange map using a business process model for the customer-to-customer process, together with structuring team meetings and creating ground rules for efficient information exchange. The Damper Division of ZF Friedrichshafen AG (case company), Schweinfurt (SCW) has recently decided to move the production of its high running parts to its facility in Pune, India. The project is facing typical Supply Chain Management challenges like delay in serial production and delivery schedules, lack of information exchange, ambiguity over roles and responsibilities, and redundant communication between the two facilities SCW and Pune, thus incurring a high transaction cost and low coordination. The literature review about information flows, business processes and process integration provided four principles that help to integrate the information flow between processes. These principles are – accessibili...

This research study throws light on one of the most common use-cases of Handwritten Digit recognition which can be seen being implemented by using a particular Deep Learning technique for pattern recognition known as Convolutional Neural Networks which works similarly to the functionality of neurons in a human brain. We have trained and tested the MNIST dataset using this technique and implemented a classifier to predict the pattern of the digits.

There are many studies which have covered the benefits of green human resource management and green supply chain management, but there is scarcity of literature with regards to measuring holistic green management practices in context of Indian pharmaceutical companies. Green management practices is widely discussed topic in today scenario, where global warming and alarming level of population has posed a warning to humans. Various industries, government institutions and social groups are taking steps/initiatives to protect the natural environment. The objective of this study is to propose and validate an instrument to measure green management practice benefits with respect to organizational performance. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) have been used to build constructs which will serve the purpose to measure green management practice adoption and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was used to validate the factor structure for observed variables.

Sparse and irregularly sampled multivariate time series are common in clinical, climate, financial and many other domains. Most recent approaches focus on classification, regression or forecasting tasks on such data. In forecasting, it is necessary to not only forecast the right value but also to forecast when that value will occur in the irregular time series. In this work, we present an approach to forecast not only the values but also the time at which they are expected to occur.

In the present work, the performances of TiAlN-, AlCrN- and AlCrN/TiAlN-coated and uncoated tungsten carbide cutting tool inserts are evaluated from the turning studies conducted on EN24 alloy steel workpiece. The output parameters such as cutting forces, surface roughness and tool wear for TiAlN-, AlCrN- and AlCrN/TiAlN-coated carbide cutting tools are compared with uncoated carbide cutting tools (K10). The design of experiment based on Taguchi’s approach is used to obtain the best turning parameters, namely cutting speed ([Formula: see text]), feed rate ([Formula: see text]) and depth of cut ([Formula: see text]), in order to have a better surface finish and minimum tool flank wear. An orthogonal array (L[Formula: see text] was used to conduct the experiments. The results show that the AlCrN/TiAlN-coated cutting tool provided a much better surface finish and minimum tool flank wear. The minimum tool flank wear and minimum surface roughness were obtained using AlCrN/TiAlN-coated to...

In this paper, we develop an algorithm to cluster places not only based on their locations but also their semantics. Specifically, two places are considered similar if they are spatially close and visited by people of similar communities. With the explosion in the availability of location-tracking technologies, it has become easy to track locations and movements of users through user "check-ins". These check-ins provide insights into the community structure of people visiting a place, which is leveraged and integrated into the proposed geo-social clustering framework called GeoScop. While community detection is typically done on social networks, in our problem, we lack any network data. Rather, two people belong to the same community if they visit similar geo-social clusters. We tackle this chicken-and-egg problem through an iterative procedure of expectation maximization and DBSCAN. Extensive experiments on real check-in data demonstrate that GeoScop mines semantically meaningful clusters that cannot be found by using any of the existing clustering techniques. Furthermore, GeoScop is up to 6 times more pure in social quality than the state-of-the-art technique. The executables for the tool are available at http://www.cse.iitm.ac.in/ ~simsayan/software.html.

The triple bottom line (TBL) principle encompasses the idea of continued economic and social well-being with minimal or reduced environmental pressure. However, in construction projects, the integration of social, economic, and environmental dimensions from the TBL perspective remains challenging. Green building rating tools/schemes, such as Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment (GRIHA), Leadership in Energy and Environment Design (LEED), Building Research Establishment Environment Assessment (BREEAM), and their criteria, which serve as a yardstick in ensuring sustainability based practices and outcomes, are also left wanting. These green building rating tools/schemes not only fail to comprehensively evaluate the three dimensions (social, economic, and environment) and interaction therewith, but also lack in capturing a life cycle approach towards sustainability. Therefore, this study intends to address the aforementioned challenges. The first part of this study presents th...
