With the systematic archaeological investigations of the objects in the travertine cliff, on which is located the monastery Zrze, have been discovered a significant number of fragments of fresco painting. More than 200 of the found fragments belong to the interior decoration of a natural hollow in the eastern slope of the cliff, which was adapted for liturgical function. Through the analysis of the artistic features of the fragmented representations and a chemical analysis of the painting materials, in this paper is made partial reconstruction of the painted motives and are established chronological frames for the creation of the interior decoration of the cave church. The choice of the motifs, the features of the painting method and the chemical composition of the mortars and the pigments determine the provenience of this painting in the first half of the 17th century. The data obtained from the study of the frescoes of the cave church do not only commit for profound insight into the artistic activities in the sacred edifices within the Cultural Complex of Zrze, but also contribute to the perception of important aspects of the organization and the functioning of the monastery Zrze in this period.

The Book of Daniel is one of the most significant Old Testament texts, on which were built the main eschatological views of Christian theology. Certain parts of its content were inspirations for some of the most popular iconographical themes in early Christian art, but the seventh chapter of the prophetic text visually was designed even at the beginning of the XIV century. The earliest representation of the Four Kingdoms appears in the second quarter of the XVI ct. as a segment of the composition of Last Judgment. Actualization of this artistic motive takes place in the period when the Christian vassals of the Ottoman Empire started to feel strongly the burden of their affiliation to the “second-class religion”. Manifestations of religious intolerance, increased converting to Islam and social isolation, raised again the eschatological hope in the end of history and the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven.
