The history of Creative Writing in Brazil is recent. The country may have many successful authors, some of them internationally recognised but, before 2006, there were no academic courses. Writing instruction came mostly from independent workshops. It was in that year that the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) offered students the opportunity to write original creative work as their Master’s degree dissertation in Literary Theory. This first experience led to the establishment of the Creative Writing concentration (joining Literary Theory and Linguistics) in postgraduate courses; but it was only in 2016 that the first Creative Writing undergraduate programme was created. This pioneering work has been a valuable experience, deeply influenced by the development of the field in foreign countries, and has been changing the academic outlook for Creative Writing in Brazil. This article is a reflection on Creative Writing as an academic field in Brazil, and the related challenges, consequences, connections and perspectives for the future.

Bueno offers a discussion on how geek culture is found in literature, in an effort to expand the critical analysis of this topic beyond its presence in television and movies. Using examples from various literary works and drawing from concepts such as intertextuality, paratextuality and hypertextuality, Bueno explores the nature of geeks and nerds and how they are found in novels such as Junot Díaz’sThe Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. The term Geek Metafiction, therefore, applies to the kind of literature where geek culture plays a central role.

Abstract: Exploring the concept of “voice in fiction”, D.W. Wilson’s essay reflects on its possible interpretations, focusing primarily on voice-as-spoken and voice-as-written. Beyond these broad concepts, there is the writer’s voice, who is reading the text; the simulation of the writer’s spoken voice, manifested on the written essay; the voice we listen to in our minds, when we read a text; and the voice as style, as the text’s identity, generating intimacy between literature and reader. Complementing the essay, Bernardo Bueno offers an introductory note on the historical and personal context surrounding the essay, and notes on the process of translating “voice”.

Abstract: During the PhD in Creative Writing at the University of East Anglia (UK), I wrote the novel Legendary days. This novel – and the critical piece that preceded it – was heavily inspired by Geek culture, which can be defined, in general terms, as the subculture of geeks (smart people with poor social skills and obsessive interest in certain themes and genres, such as technology, fantasy and science fiction). This article presents an unpublished translation of excerpts of Legendary days into Portuguese, and some introductory notes on the creative process.
