I suoi campi di studio riguardano soprattutto aspetti della produzione e della circolazione monetaria in città o comunità del Mezzogiorno d’Italia, in epoca greca e romana. Altri filoni di ricerca investono la museologia e il collezionismo di monete antiche. Direttore del Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (1982-1992) ha coordinato le attività espositive e di ricerca dell'Istituto e partecipato all'organizzazione scientifica di numerose mostre in Italia e all'estero, tra cui l’esposizione permanente delle raccolte monetali al Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli (2001) e l’allestimento della sezione relativa all’Herculanense Museum nella Reggia di Portici (2008).edit

During recent archaeological field surveys carried out in Pontecagnano, a little hoard of Greek silver coins, datable between the end of the 5th and the beginning of the following century (19 items among staters and fractions from Poseidonia, Velia, Turi, Eraclea, Caulonia, Crotone, Terina), has been excavated. The composition of the treasure and its placement, a sacred area designed for votive rituals, provide grounds for reflection on the monetary customs of the inhabitants of this Etruscan-Sannitic centre of Southern Campania. So far, for the same chronological phase, such customs have only been documented by the finding of coins offered to the deceased in a small number of grave goods. Therefore, the cause-effect relation between mercenary practices of local communities and the arrival of foreign currency in the Gulf of Salerno cannot be excluded. They were probably members of groups known as Tyrrhenoi and Sileraioi believed, in some literature, to be mercenaries employed by Dionisius I of Syracuse originating from both Ager Picentius and from the region crossed by the river Sele. The hoard was probably the offering of a mercenary soldier coming home. The value of coins is estimated to correspond approximately to the monthly salary of a misthophoros of that time. The place of retrieval would confirm this hypothesis: the Northern sanctuary, in its present state appearing to be the only sacred part of the built-up area, was designated to both donations consisting of aes rude or coins and to votive offerings of a military type.

Nei santuari delle comunità anelleniche della Campania gli accumuli di moneta rispondono perlopiù a pratiche devozionali e non presentano caratteristiche tali da essere interpretati come quel che resta del tesoro della comunità . Forse solo il deposito di grossi frammenti di bronzo recuperati nell’area del santuario settentrionale di Pontecagnano (pezzi di metallo, e non monete, trattandosi di materiale di VI a.C.) si può interpretare come una pubblica riserva di valore, posta sotto il controllo della divinità .
I ritrovamenti dalle stipi votive di Teano (CE), di Stabia (NA), della valle di Ansanto (AV) e di Pontecagnano (SA) costituiscono le situazioni più significative, oppure meglio documentate perché oggetto di scavi o di studi sistematici. Sono presentate, quindi, osservazioni riguardo al tipo e ai quantitativi di moneta deposta come ex voto in questi santuari, con la premessa che l’esame condotto si riferisce alla fase sannitica e che il limite cronologico più basso è dato dagli anni della guerra annibalica.

The presence of armed individuals is traceable, already from the 440-420 b.C. onward, in the necropolis of Gaudo, in the vicinity of Paestum. This leads to the assumption that Posidonians would hire mercenary forces well integrated in the territory. In Pontecagnano as well, since the last quarter of the 5th century, deceased showing their status of warriors have been documented. The data obtained trough recent researches are conducive to suppose they were probably members of groups called Tyrrhenoi and Sileraioi, known for the rare bronze coins issued in Sicily with legend TYΡΡHor ΣΥΛΕΡΑΙΩΝ.
