Certain of the only possible certainty: uncertainty. My life as an anthropologist has drawn my attention from humankind deep into the living things, humans included. I have made this trade a mode of life, and I'm grateful that at this point in life not regret my initial intuition. As a teacher, as a researcher, as chronicler, but, for the most, as a living creature among others, I enjoy doing as I do. Address: Santiago, Region Metropolitana, Chile

Race, ethnicity or genealogy invoke conditions of origin to demarcate franchises and administer stigmas. Genetics provides the scientific basis to justify these differentiating processes and hence it is necessary to reflect on their role in contemporary society.

Here I analyze three social practices at different levels of inclusion (personal, household and community levels), suggesting that the three conform to a recurrent pattern established upon a regenerative type of interchange that, using a Gabriela Mistral’s metaphor, I describe as congenital paganism. I analyze the practices of the Mapuche of the Andean range in southern Chile concerning their personal relations with trees, their residential patterns, and the nguillatún or lepun - the annual ceremony of gratitude. These practices indicate that even in a context of capitalist devastation the communities can contribute to the bettering of the environment. And they do so upon the basis of fairness and social inclusion. In this sense, contrary to stereotypes, these communities ought to be considered as creditors in environmental initiatives aiming to protect the native forest.

Smoke, in this sense, represents a very particular kind of substance. It is fundamental to environmental change, to physical transformations occurring at a molar level, and it is radical in being elemental to the coming and going of entities in and out of existence (Gibson 2015). The ritual use of smoke positions itself amidst events where particulate substances are manipulated into existence, modifying the medium.
