Some studies have suggested that personality factors are important to optimism development. Others have emphasized that family relations are relevant variables to optimism. This study aimed to evaluate the importance of parenting styles to optimism controlling for the variance accounted for by personality factors. Participants were 344 Brazilian high school students (44% male) with mean age of 16.2 years (SD = 1) who answered personality, optimism, responsiveness and demandingness scales. Hierarchical regression analyses were conducted having personality factors (in the first step) and maternal and paternal parenting styles, and demandingness and responsiveness (in the second step) as predictive variables and optimism as the criterion. Personality factors, especially neuroticism (β = –.34, p < .01), extraversion (β = .26, p < .01) and agreeableness (β = .16, p < .01), accounted for 34% of the optimism variance and insignificant variance was predicted exclusively by parental styles (1%). These findings suggest that personality is more important to optimism development than parental styles.

This study investigated relationships between self-compassion, self-efficacy, and self-esteem, as well as age and sex differences and other sociodemographic variables in relation to self-compassion. Four-hundred and thirty-two Brazilian adults (50% women) from nearly all country states participated in the study filling out a sociodemographic survey and three scales: self-compassion, self-efficacy, and self-esteem. Comparisons of means between self-compassion and pairs of groups designed by sociodemographic data showed higher self-compassion in men, people aged from 31 to 66 years-old, not under psychiatric medication, without a job, and with children. Results also showed that self-compassion is highly correlated with self-esteem and self-efficacy. We highlight that results are sample dependent and further studies on self-compassion need to be conducted in Brazil.

ABSTRACT BARROS, Mônica Colognese; NATIVIDADE, Jean Carlos and HUTZ, Cláudio Simon. Development and validation of a gender role measure. Aval. psicol. [online]. 2013, vol.12, n.3, pp. 317-324. ISSN 1677-0471. The instruments used for the investigation of gender roles differ widely, depending on the time and culture in which they were developed, and on what they are designed to measure. The objective of the present study was to develop and validate a gender role scale through an empirical survey about feminine and masculine characteristics. A list containing 107 expressions of feminine and masculine characteristics was prepared. This list was presented to 223 people from Southern Brazil. Participants were asked to indicate how much each one of the expressions was masculine or feminine. The results led to the selection of 20 expressions which were applied to 510 people (53.4% women) from four regions of the country. Their mean age was 29.0 years (SD=8.83) and their education level ranged from high school to postgraduate. The results indicated that the final version of the instrument (14 items) was reliable and presented evidence of construct validity indicating independent dimensions of Masculinity and Femininity.

This study searched for sociodemographic influences on visual memory and visuoconstructive ability in healthy and clinical samples evaluated with Benton Visual Retention Test (BVRT) in two studies. In Study 1, we searched for changes related to age in children, adolescents, adults and elderly on the performance of the BVRT. In Study 2, we investigated the relations among age, years of education and intellectual quotient (IQ) on the performance of the BVRT using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM). Participants were 624 individuals aged between six and 89 years old (M = 25.40; SD = 22.34) from the normatization and evidence validity studies at Brazil. We used a sociodemographic questionnaire, BVRT and IQ measure was estimated. Study 1 has shown a performance similar to the developmental graphics with a U-inverted pattern in relation to age: An increase of the visual memory ability in the children and adolescent groups as age increases, a tendency of a decrease in the performance in th...
