At the end of the Middle Ages the city council of Cadiz requested economic financing to the Crown of Castile to repair the bridge of Suazo due to the bad state of conservation. The building repair’s is framed within a global context of Context of defensive, port and road reconstruction works on the Southern Iberia during the late 15th and early 16th centuries. The rebuilding of this bridge was a fundamental issue for the economic life of Cadiz, for it was the only terrestrial route to access to the island and the city. Its conservation has been of key importance to develop the overland trade, which complemented maritime trade. The discovery of unpublished documents from the Archivo General de Simancas has allowed to undertake this comprehensive study about the bridge’s state, as well as repair works and the means of financing.

This article has as a main aim to address the role played by the port of Cadiz as a crucial stopover for Genoese ships which sailed the Atlantic route since 1277. On the basis of a detailed analysis of Genoese notarial acts compiled by Renée Doehaerd and Léone Liagre de Sturler, we try to reconstruct the commercial activity within international trade of the seaport of Cádiz over the fourteenth century. Our attention focuses on issues closely related to navigation and commercial operations, such as routes, merchandise, pilots, maritime insurances, ship types, among others.
