Transgender and gender non-conforming (TGNC) individuals are often on the receiving end of discrimination and unfair treatment in the workplace, which can even escalate to violence or complete rejection. Davis (2009), for instance, has highlighted how many TGNC workers feel that their workplace is unsafe or inhospitable. Notwithstanding these difficulties, TGNC people are able to tap into significant personal and collective resources in order to protect themselves from the negative effects of discrimination (Law et al., 2011).In order to better understand the personal and work-related processes linked with being in the workplace as a TGNC individual, it is important to give voice directly to those who live and experience this reality. This is why puntOorg International Journal is collecting self narratives from TGNC individuals who want to tell their stories working in organizations or businesses as transgender or gender non-conforming people, including (but not limited to) issues a...

A large amount of theoretical and experimental research—from dynamic systems to computational neurosciences, from statistical learning to psychobiology of development—indicates that the encounter between Humans and very powerful AI will lead, in the near future, to organisms capable of going over the simulation of brain functions: hybrids that will learn from their internal states, will interpret the facts of reality, establish their goals, talk with humans and, especially, will decide according to their own ‘system of values’. Soon the traditional symbolic-formal domain could be overcome by the construction of systems with central control functions, with cognition similar to the biological brain. This requires a clarification on how they will act and, mostly, how they will decide. But what do we know today about decision-making processes and what is their relationship with the emotional spheres? If, traditionally, emotions were considered separate from the logical and rational thought, in recent years we have begun to understand that emotions have deep influence on human decisions. In this paper, we intend to show how emotions are crucial in moral decisions and that their understanding may help us to avoid mistakes in the construction of hybrid organisms capable of autonomous behavior.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a demyelinating disease of the CNS occurring in young adults and even in children in 5% of cases. Lower quality of life (QoL) and cognitive impairment (CI) (40-54%) have been reported in early-onset MS (EO-MS) patients. To assess QoL and cognitive function in EO-MS and their relationship, also considering demographic and clinical variables. Paediatric Quality of life inventory Version 4.0 for patients aged 13-18 and 19-25 years, Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI II) and the Rao Brief Repeatable Battery were performed in EO-MS patients (onset age ≤25years). EDSS and MSSS were performed at same time. After testing for normal distribution, group comparisons were performed through the two-tailed Student's t test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and linear or logistic regression when appropriate. The Bonferroni correction for multiple testing was used when appropriate. 59 patients were included (mean age: 20 ± 3.6; Female sex 52.54%). 34 patients had a paediatric onset (<18 years) while 20 patients had a juvenile onset (18 < age < 25 years) of disease. 5 patients were excluded for missing data. HR-QoL was higher in paediatric than juvenile MS patients (p = 0.02), and it was inversely related to EDSS (p = 0.0005) and Multiple Sclerosis Severity score (MSSS) (p = 0.0001). Sixtyone % of patients showed a CI at BRB. No association was found between CI and any socio-demographic and clinical data. HR-QoL total score was not related to CI status nor to any domain-specific cognitive function score, even considering BDI as possible bias. CI was related to social, physical functioning score and EDSS (p = 0.01) at a logistic regression backward stepwise estimation. HR-QoL resulted to be better in paediatric than juvenile MS onset patients and was inversely related to rapidity of disability accumulation, while cognitive impairment was influenced by physical disability and poor social involvement (school, education …). Social participation, affective relations and psychological flexibility could have a protective function on CI.

Congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD) represents the most frequent form of CAH and of 46, XX disorder of sex development in female newborns. In the majority of cases, particularly in developed countries, female patients suffering from the classic forms of CAH reach the diagnosis at birth or in the early childhood, allowing a prompt treatment with a correct gender assignment. The current manuscript describes an unusual case of an Italian 46-year-old woman, homeborn in the 60s, receiving an extraordinarily late diagnosis of simple virilising classic form of CAH due to 21-OHD, determining a relevant impairment of both physical and psychosexual development. The patient presented primary amenorrhea, height under target, overweight with visceral adiposity, hypercholesterolemia and insulin resistance, hirsutism with a typical male-pattern hair growth, external genital ambiguity, and a severe impairment in the entire series of psychological dimension...

This study aims to investigate the impact of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) on quality of life of adolescents, exploring the moderating role of resilience. The major studies were focused on cognitive impairment, management of psychological distress for adolescents with MS remains understudied. The resilience construct offers insights to understand how these individuals can achieve optimal functioning. This study involves the use of the following measures: PedsQL (2004), Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory; BDI-II (2006), Beck-Depression Inventory II; STAI-Y (1989), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; the CYRM-28, Child and Youth Resilience Measure (Ungar, Liebenberg, 2011). Participants are 53 adolescents with MS (21M 32F, age mean 21,08, s.d. 3) attending the University General Hospital. Data shows that resilience is a predictor of HRQoL (p<.05 b=.315); other predictor are depression (b= -.526 p< .001) and anxiety (b=-.727 p<.001). Furthermore, data shows that resilience competence ha...

Each new era brings with it new technologies and new challenges to civilization. The impetuous technological development is changing the economy and work more and more every day; to the point of making the passage from agrarian society to industrial society seem like a trifle. Nevertheless, if there is widespread awareness of the general issues of society, there is definitely less on the way in which anthropomorphic robots (increasingly in an emotional and cognitive relationship with human beings) are radically modifying intimate and exclusive spheres such as sexuality and love. An epochal passage is being announced from an organic sexuality (driven by desire and pleasure) to an inorganic, artificial sexuality, suspended in an abstract excitement, always at hand and disengaged from categories such as beauty, forms and age. In this paper, we will discuss the plausibility of an emotional relationship between robots and human beings and its ethical implications. It is probable, in fact...

For over a century, it has been accepted that there exists a remote psychic space that influences our way of thinking, perception, decision-making and so on. This space, defined by Freud as the ‘unconscious’, embodies the psychic element that we are unaware of. It is a space that is an extension and a wider representation of the complex and sophisticated metapsychological apparatus he conceived. With respect to the conscious sphere (whose related anatomical function concerns the encephalic trunk, diencephalon and associative cortical areas), this unconscious dimension relates to the limbic lobe and specific areas of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes. This complex neurophysiological system connects and coordinates the sensory, emotional, cognitive and behavioural systems. Its sophisticated adaptive functions, implied and unaware, allow the prefrontal cortex to transform a huge amount of information into explicit behaviour, thus affecting our behaviour in terms of executive fun...

Introduction The study focuses on the issue of same-sex parenting in Italy, one of the few Western countries where it is not legally permitted. The aim of the research is to collect the experience of parents who have had a child abroad through reproduction and/or gestation procedures not ratified and recognized by the national legal system. Methods The research involved 32 same-sex parents, specifically 22 mothers (Mage = 41.3; SD = 6.5) and 10 fathers (Mage = 43.8; SD = 7.4) of at least one child. Data were collected in the first part of 2022, using a narrative interview designed to collect parents’ representation of same-sex parenting in Italy. The interviews were analyzed using Emotional Textual Analysis, a text mining methodology for tracing the emotional dimensions of text. Results The factorial analysis generated four thematic clusters (1—loneliness; 2—denied rights; 3—starting a family; and 4—future of LGBTQ+ liberation process) and two factors (1—minority stress; 2—conservat...
