This paper reports a system study of a constellation of spaceborne advanced SARs for high temporal, geometric and radiometric resolution mapping of the Earth surface. The study is aimed at the identification of overall performance and feasibility of an integrated remote sensing system to be deployed within the next fifteen years for nearly real-time high accuracy mapping, with special emphasis

ABSTRACT In this article, we examine the upgrading trajectories of selected aquaculture value chains in four Asian countries and the links between upgrading and three factors of value chain governance: coordination mechanisms; types of drivers; and domestic regulation. We find instances of improving products, processes, and value chain coordination—while “moving up” the value chain is rare. We also find that the type of value chain driver and the quality of the domestic regulatory framework are main facilitators of upgrading. We conclude by highlighting lessons on the potential, limits and risks of upgrading the “blue revolution” in Asia.

CO.RI.S.T.A. (Consortium for Research on Advanced Remote Sensors), in collaboration with the Universities of Naples and Bari (Italy), has been developing a set of C-band ARCs, deployed during several synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) campaigns (TOPSAR 1991, ERS-1 1992 and 1993). The acquired experience has led to the design and development of a new set of ARCs operating in L-, C- and

ABSTRACT This paper reports a system study of a constellation of spaceborne advanced SARs for high temporal, geometric and radiometric resolution mapping of the Earth surface. The study is aimed at the identification of overall performance and feasibility of an integrated remote sensing system to be deployed within the next fifteen years for nearly real-time high accuracy mapping, with special emphasis on natural disasters management. The SAR conceptual design includes the frequency identification and the quantitative evaluation of the main system parameters. Thanks to the capability of range beam steering, it is demonstrated that fast global access of whatsoever area on the Earth surface can be obtained by means of two sets of identical satellites, adequately located along sun-synchronous orbits. Finally, the spacecraft pointing knowledge requirements are pointed out, taking global fast access and target localization into account.

This paper shows an application of the fuzzy-logic approach to mobile mapping issues, presenting results of fuzzy processing of the C/A-code-based GPS measurements (standalone static positioning), whose accuracy depends essentially on the satellite observation geometry, expressed numerically by the GDOP (Geometrical Dilution Of Precision) factor, and on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). A fuzzy controller, developed in the Matlab environment, is presented together with the envisaged rule base and the design steps (fuzzification, inference engine, defuzzification). A quality index is derived from the fuzzy-logic based data analysis, which allows us to select the "best" GPS observables to be processed in the positioning equations. Experimental results are presented and discussed from real data gathered by a commercial GPS receiver (the Garmin® GPS25-LV 12-channel receiver). Significant improvements of the positioning accuracy have been obtained with respect to the "raw&q...

Presents a spaceborne SAR system simulator based on a coherent approach. After a description of the original aspects of the computer simulator (i.e., digital terrain model, Earth ellipsoid rotation, space platform orbital and attitude dynamics, antenna pattern, chirp sampling, and two-dimensional compression), the characterization of passive and active calibrators embedded in different backgrounds is discussed in terms of the SAR

ABSTRACT Standards are used to govern an increasing share of global food trade, and have been interpreted by academics both as market access barriers and opportunities for low-income country producers, exporters and workers. Donors have mostly chosen to treat them as opportunities and today finance a variety of programmes and projects aimed at supporting standards development and conformity. This article contributes to the critical literature discussing the challenges and potentials of standards conformity and supplies policy recommendations for future interventions. It reports the results of a research programme on standards conformity in East Africa. These demonstrate that most interventions underestimate the nature of the challenges faced and that significant impacts are achieved only under rather restricted conditions. The solutions lay not only in more selective support to standard development and better-informed interventions, but also to focus more squarely on supply capacity and welfare outcomes in project planning.

This chapter provides a background to value chain analysis, and then outlines the conceptual framework developed for the purpose of this programme to help overcome the shortcomings of 'stand-alone'value chain, poverty, gender and environmental analyses. This conceptual framework attempts to integrate analytically the 'vertical'and 'horizontal'elements of value chains that affect poverty and sustainability, focusing on the participation in agro-food value chains of small producers and other weak chain actors in developing countries. ...
