ABSTRACT Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions are changing the way that software is produced, distributed, consumed, and priced. PaaS, also known as cloud platform, offer an execution environment based on software platforms. To be competitive on the market, PaaS providers have to be aware of drivers of successful platforms and design or adjust their business models accordingly. Surprisingly, prior research has made little attempt to investigate consumers’ preferences on PaaS that influence developers’ choice on PaaS solutions. This paper examines this understudied issue through a conjoint study. First a comprehensive literature analysis on PaaS has been conducted in order to build the study design on a rigorous foundation. The conducted conjoint survey contained ten attributes together with 26 corresponding attribute levels and has been completed by 103 participants. Based on the results, a prioritized list of customers’ preferences for PaaS has been created.

ABSTRACT Marketplaces for cloud services, referred to as electronic marketplaces (eMPs), have been introduced for a number of purposes, including comparability and transparency of service offerings. Since the complexity of services and their provisioning is increasing, eMPs need to handle the dynamic and automated creation of composite services, i.e. services which are yielded in part by using third-party services available on the marketplace. To meet this requirement, eMPs need a standardized machine readable description of service offerings. This paper presents an approach to define price models for services traded on eMPs, using a subset of the Unified Service Description Language (USDL). To enable composite service pricing, this paper introduces an approach on the aggregation of several price models into one price model and analyses the time complexity of the price aggregation algorithm presented.

Due to an increased competition for volunteers, nonprofit organizations have intensified efforts to recruit members as volunteers. But how to effectively persuade members to volunteer using visual communication? Research suggests that images are most persuasive when they demand something from the viewer. A demand is expressed through the depiction of a person who directly gazes at the viewer, whereas an offer is expressed through the depiction of a face with an averted gaze. Demands and offers can also be expressed verbally. A verbal demand is articulated through commands, whereas a verbal offer is conveyed through statements. This study examines whether NPOs should address their members using demands or offers and whether correspondence between image and text increases persuasion. An experiment among 205 members of a Swiss NPO finds that direct gaze images are most effective. However, image-text matching increases persuasion for campaigns that feature an averted gaze image.

Enterprise mashups (EMs) are a new technology that enables the automation of situational needs of knowledge workers. EMs imply a new development paradigm based on the peer production philosophy and empower end users to create individual applications without the involvement of the IT department. So far, there is insufficient research on potential benefits of EMs. This paper contributes to fill this gap by designing an EM benefit model. By following the design science approach, the balance scorecard concept is leveraged to identify and structure potential benefits of EMs. By means of a laboratory experiment and a case study, the applicability of the designed benefit model is demonstrated.

Abstract: Driven by the increasing demand, Grid technology is entering the business market in form of utility computing, Grid middleware and Grid-enabled applications. However, the business market is interested in complete Grid solutions. Thus, a successful take up of Grid technology on the business market requires the establishment of Grid value networks. This again can only be achieved by implementation of sound business models for each player providing part of a Grid solution. This paper discusses the business models of providers of Grid-enabled applications. Keywords: Grid Business Models, Business Grids, Grid-enabled Application 1

The MEMPHIS project (http://www.istmemphis. org) aims at developing a platform for cross-lingual premium content services, targeting mainly portable thin clients, like mobile phones, PDAs, etc. The core of the system is a cross-lingual transformation layer integrating cross-lingual information extraction and summarization of source documents, translation to the customers' target languages as well as multilingual generation of documents according to the restrictions and requirements of the various target devices for distribution. This paper will present an overview of MEMPHIS focusing on its NL technologies.

Online learning communities are introduced as a comprehensive model for technology-enabled learning. We give an analysis of goals in education and the requirements to community platforms. The main contribution of the article is a reference model for online learning communities that consists of four layers designing the organizational, interaction, channel or service and the technological model of learning communities. This reference model captures didactic goals, learning methods and learning platforms in a structured way and provides guidelines on how to design and implement a medium for learning.

Based on the results, a prioritized list of customers’ preferences for PaaS has been created. The results confirm that, of the survey in the short term, mainly technical aspects are critical to the adoption of PaaS.

Environmental performance indicators (EPIs) help to measure an organization’s impact on the environment, including ecosystems, land, air and water. They clearly illustrate how the organization is performing, and provide management with the necessary information to make decisions for future improvements. This section provides a seamless and easy-to-follow set of guidelines of environmental policies and standards, a review of existing classifications of environmental indicators, and derives a selected list of EPIs, which are elaborated in the remaining chapters of this book.

Andrea Giessmann, Philipp Kyas, Pasi Tyrväinen, Katarina Stanoevska Platform as a Service (PaaS) solutions are changing the way software is produced, distributed, used, and priced. However, there has been little research into understanding the dynamics of PaaS business models and how these business models should be designed to establish a flourishing ecosystem around these platforms. Using design science research (DSR) we first identified the main design elements of PaaS business models as well as their relationships by investigating 24 PaaS providers. The resulting classification scheme as well as the qualitative systems dynamics model (in form of a causal loop diagram (CLD)) facilitates a better understanding of the adoption dynamics of PaaS business models. By focusing on the adoption dynamics of PaaS business models, our research goes beyond previous approaches for studying PaaS. http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/HICSS.2014.127

The paper will approach the topic of the provision of SaaS in a Grid environment. In particular, starting from the analysis of 18 real business cases, some sensitive issues will be addressed, like the impact of Grid applications and resources offered with the SaaS model in existing and new markets (investments, market entrance, competition etc.), pricing policies and schemas, SLAs and some major legal aspects, namely in connection with the contract entered into by the parties in a typical SaaS scenario. The main lessons are that Grid is a very promising technology and that software providers gained a deeper understanding and trust of how Grid can be useful for their scope and is able to create a new paradigm for the supply of SaaS. From the legal point of view, then, Grid is not a neutral technology and indeed it does matter when drafting and applying SaaS agreements.

Community building and community development, ie, community management were proclaimed as a key success factor in the digital economy differentiating business models in the digital economy from traditional ones. As a result online communities emerged in different forms–as part of online shops, as portal sites, as part of B2B platforms, or as design, relationship or game communities.
