Technologies and applications developed to assist and promote museum activities and cultural exhibitions have evolved significantly during the last decade, as has been proven by many works published in the scientific literature. This paper addresses a study developed with the specific purpose of understanding the possible knowledge-transfer outcomes of a digitization process meant to replicate original drawings by Leonardo da Vinci in the digital domain, allowing museums’ visitors to explore them as if they were manipulating the original artworks through custom interactive artifacts. A report is presented here to evaluate and investigate the didactic effectiveness of the fruition devices set up during a real exhibition, with a focus on the application dedicated to the drawing Study for the Adoration of the Magi, part of five artworks by Leonardo selected for exhibition during the reported event. The results encourage the adoption of this kind of technology for disseminating informat...

Nowadays cities, as well as Cultural Heritage, are facing new challenges due to the public financial straits and the increasing need to deliver innovative service to manage a wide heritage. Great expectations are in put the Smart City paradigm relying on the capability of the city to realize and scale up intangible infrastructures based on new typologies of partnerships for the development of services. The paper presents a design framework aimed to transform Cultural Items in Smart Cultural Objects (SCO), meant as sources and recipients of advanced information applied on ‘Widespread Built Cultural Heritage’. The aim has been not just to enhance the artifacts with their own quality, but their unique social, communal, anthropological and urban-infrastructural meaning. The ability to manage efficiently heterogeneous data and the levels of global connectivity, as well as the real-time interaction, perception, localization, communication, and identification, made possible by cloud comput...

In this article we hypothesize that, in an interactive system for the representation of the knowledge related to a work of art, it is possible to detect a relation between visual coherence (in particular, the coherence of the number of constituent traits in graphical elements) and epistemic coherence (in particular, the coherence of the forms of knowledge), and that this relation affects the readability and the understanding of specific contents of the work of art. This article describes an experimental design which is conceived for verifying the validity of the research hypothesis. The planned research allows to describe a valid criterion for the development of a system of signs and contents related to a work of art.

Infine, i nuovi sistemi come l’Internet of Things o il fenomeno dello Us...

The adoption of innovative tools and new chains of digitization, represent an unavoidable base of knowledge towards a more clear understanding of our cultural heritage. The article presents a research work conducted for the development of a mobile application, specifically developed according to the paradigm of learning by interacting. The contents of the application, released by Universita Politecnica delle Marche for the Galleria Nazionale delle Marche have been scientifically validated by a team of experts of the Gallery; besides, they came from high resolution acquisition, which are the backbone of all the functionalities of the app. Thanks to the monitoring of the user experience and to the standardization of the contents, the application is performing and user centered at the same time. This work paves the way for a multidisciplinary reflection over our digital cultural heritage, and contributes to spread methods and adaptive for the communication, facilitating the adoption by...

The aim of the article is to offer a reflection on the relationship between university and knowledge. This relationship today is threatened by a drift towards economic interest and an excess of bureaucracy and evaluation, which are often taken for granted without problematizing them. In fact, the way we understand this relationship actually has significant consequences on the functioning of universities and, even more so, on the knowledge that they should build independently and freely. The article is divided into three parts. The first part identifies three main functions that the university performs with respect to knowledge (preserving, transmitting and expanding it). In the second part, some key aspects of the relationship between university and knowledge are discussed in an epistemological perspective: epistemological aspects related to the conception of knowledge and aspects related to the social structure of knowledge. Finally, the third part discusses the conditions for a co...

We present a study on teacher education and, in particular, on Physics. Our assumption is that General Didactics and Disciplinary Didactic constitute two fundamental components of teachers’ professional development and therefore both must be used to interpret didactic phenomena adequately. This research involves a sample of 274 prospective teachers, enrolled in the Primary Education Sciences degrees in three Italian Universities (Milano Bicocca, Udine, Urbino,). It concerns the study of the spontaneous representations produced by students to foster understanding of the force concept and on the reasons given to motivate their effectiveness on an educational level and disciplinary one. The research tools and methods were developed by crossing the literature of General Didactics and Physics Education, identifying analytical categories that emerge from two different and complementary perspectives. In the broad spectrum of students’ conceptions, given by this double perspective, some asp...

The paper, aiming to retrieve the original meaning of Smart City, attempts to demonstrate its impact in the field of Cultural Heritage (CH). It presents a framework - applied in a project for a prototypical case study of ‘Widespread Built Heritage’ (WBH) - to create a Smart cultural city, transforming Cultural Items into Smart Cultural Objects (SCO), meant as sources and recipients of advanced information. The framework aims to provide an extensive and robust theoretical support to design and to manage the processes of Cultural Objects (CO) and Cultural bins, implementing a methodological system and an advanced environment based on Smart technologies.

We reflect specifically on the curriculum for bachelor’s level program in communication design. We propose a model of education which we define as “metadisciplinary” and which is grounded on the acquisition of competences rather than the acquisition of specific contents. Our objective is to show how a metadisciplinary didactic model can benefit from the weak epistemological status of the knowledge base of communication design. According to the idea that didactics can be treated as a science of design, we propose a model of educational design based on a metadisciplinary stance. First we describe two fundamental aspects of the model proposed: (1) the development of habitus of thought and action and (2) the distributed and collective nature of expert knowledge. Next, we discuss the notion of curriculum architecture. Finally, we describe a basic set of metadisciplinary competences that we have identified for students in the field of communication design.

On the basis of various experiences in this area, the authors present in this article some reflections on the training of teachers of mathematics. After taking certain general positions on some ¿controversial¿ issues in the current international debate, the authors focus their attention on the study of language, seen from various perspectives, and on the difference between the positions of Piaget and Vygotski with regard to this topic, proposing that arguments of this type should be part of the expertise of future lecturers, given that didactics makes up a part of the larger field of communication.

The project “topography of Dante’s inferno” is an experiment on alternative mode of access to a complex text relying on an evident topographical structure. The artifact (a website) is designed with the aim of introducing young students (11–14 years old) to a text usually read and studied by older students (16–19 years old). The design of the artifact was based on the theories of Sinsem\ueda applied to interaction design, and the testing focused on (1) usability and (2) on the understanding of the topography of the poem as a precondition for understanding the text

In the field of science education, color can provide an interdisciplinary learning content, potentially suitable for overcoming disciplinary fragmentation and promoting in students a general attitude towards dealing with problems. However, because of its polysemic nature, it is very difficult to make students able to interpret, within the theoretical paradigm of modern science, a concept that they first learn to know through perceptual experience. As a pervasive phenomenon of our daily life, color vision gives rise, indeed, to a variety of naïve conceptions – similar to the pre-Newtonian ones – that act as a filter to the new learning contents. In this context we identified, through a historical-epistemological analysis, the ancient contrast between simple and compound colors as a source of potential misconceptions to be investigated empirically. We hypothesized we could detect some misconceptions due to the lack of awareness of the different contexts – physics, physiology of vision...

“The Topography of Dante’s Inferno” is a synsemic interactive artifact which is designed for 11-14 years old students. The design process has been based on the fundamental concepts of synsemia, which lead to anartifact that includes and combines different didactic mediators; in particular, in this article it is described more in detail the fundamental concept of reference frame. The reference frame can be described as the frame (consisting of graphic elements) which allows to contextualize the graphic elements of a synsemic text.
The artifact has been qualitatively evaluated in two focus groups (one with 12 teachers in training and one with 12 teachers in service), in which some reflections emerged, like some misinterpretations due to a more or less correct design of the reference frame and the didactic mediators.
