L’antijudaïsme lyonnais, incarné par les archevêques Agobard et Amolon, occupe une place à part dans l’historiographie d’une période carolingienne considérée comme plus tolérante que le Moyen Âge central. Il a été récemment interprété comme une manœuvre visant à obtenir la restitution des biens de l’Église de Lyon, en arguant notamment du fait que la polémique sur les juifs connaît une éclipse inexplicable entre 829 et les années 840. Cet article entend, au contraire, ancrer cet antijudaïsme dans le contexte idéologique lyonnais des années 820-40 à l’aide d’autres sources : les notes marginales et les collections canoniques. La controverse avec les juifs est restée l’objet de tensions pendant la vacance du siège en 835-8 et est l’une des raisons de l’opposition entre les clercs lyonnais et Amalaire. Elle trouve un vif écho dans plusieurs collections canoniques lyonnaises aux côtés de la question des biens d’Église et des élections épiscopales. On peut aussi détecter plusieurs marqueurs de continuité entre le conflit des années 820 avec les juifs et la crise de l’empire en 830-5, notamment le réseau des évêques méridionaux impliqués dans la révolte. La lecture d’un commentaire marginal lyonnais sur le Deutéronome montre enfin que l’antijudaïsme allait plus loin à Lyon qu’ailleurs dans l’empire. Ces faits semblent indiquer que l’antijudaïsme lyonnais fut un enjeu en soi, motivé avant tout par les priorités pastorales d’Agobard et la volonté d’édifier une société chrétienne.

La controverse adoptianiste est l’occasion, de la part de Paulin d’Aquilée et d’Alcuin, de plusieurs accusations de falsification de manuscrits portées contre Elipand et Felix. Ces accusations relèvent d’un stéréotype hérésiologique ancré dans l’antiquité chrétienne. Elles permettent aussi aux théologiens de Charlemagne de revendiquer, pour le jeune empire carolingien, une plus grande autorité intellectuelle. L’une de ces accusations, portant sur une variante textuelle d’Hilaire (De Trinitate, II, 27), a connu une fortune considérable. Elle donne d’abord lieu à un récit augmenté d’Hincmar de Reims, dans les années 850. Elle est ensuite remployée par Barthélémy Germon, au début du XVIIIe s., pour jeter la suspicion sur les plus anciens manuscrits utilisés par les mauristes pour leurs éditions récentes d’Hilaire et Augustin. Le débat qui s’ensuit, dont l’enjeu n’est rien moins que la légitimité de la méthode philologique, s’inscrit dans une compétition plus vaste entre jésuites et mauristes. S’ajoutant à Alcuin et Hincmar, de nouvelles rumeurs voient le jour et de nouvelles enquêtes sont menées sur les manuscrits soupçonnés de corruption. Cette communication se propose, à la lumière des témoins manuscrits carolingiens, de reconstituer les étapes, médiévales et modernes, de la rumeur qui fit de Felix d’Urgel un corrupteur de manuscrits : la rumeur du « faussaire de la cour » a influencé la tradition manuscrite du De Trinitate au point de mener des libraires, parfois célèbres, à épurer leurs manuscrits personnels.

Cet article se propose d’identifier deux manuscrits personnels de l’évêque Prudence de Troyes (†861) : ms. Troyes, BM 126 et ms. Cambridge Mass., Houghton Library, fMS Typ 495. Tous deux semblent avoir été annotés par le cercle de Prudence en vue de préparer son traité De praedestinatione adversus Joannem Scottum (vers 851). Cette identification se fonde sur une comparaison entre les notes et le traité lui-même, mais aussi sur les variantes communes aux manuscrits personnels et au traité. La méthode d’annotation de Prudence se distingue de celle d’un Florus ou d’un Ratramne. On peut la définir comme une enquête lexicale portant sur le vocabulaire de la prédestination (praescientia, praevaricatio, iuratio, etc.) tel qu’on le trouve dans les textes patristiques. Ces annotations résultent d’un travail collectif : on relève plusieurs plumes différentes. Cette étude donne ainsi un aperçu du travail d’atelier d’un auteur carolingien.

Lors de la controverse adoptianiste, plusieurs accusations de falsifications sont lancées par Paulin d’Aquilée et Alcuin contre Felix d’Urgel. Dans le contexte de la Renaissance carolingienne, les Francs revendiquent une meilleure connaissance des textes saints que leurs contradicteurs. Cette revendication a pour centre la bibliothèque du palais d’où sont diffusés dans l’empire les textes qui font autorité.
En 856-60, Hincmar de Reims se saisit à nouveau de ces accusations : en 799, Felix aurait falsifié les manuscrits du palais d’Aix-la-Chapelle. Cette légende du « faussaire de la cour »  est lourde de conséquences : les passages soi-disant corrompus par Felix, en particulier dans le De trinitate d’Hilaire, sont traqués tout au long des IXe et Xe siècles, au point que le texte d’origine a été réécrit dans plusieurs manuscrits.
En 1706, le récit d’Hincmar est remployé par le jésuite Barthélémy Germon pour disqualifier les manuscrits utilisés par les éditions mauristes. Le « faussaire de la cour » se trouve à nouveau au centre d’une longue controverse. L’enjeu en est la légitimité de la philologie face à un scepticisme méthodologique subordonnant l’établissement du texte au monopole interprétatif de l’Église.
Cet article se propose de suivre, de manuscrit en manuscrit, les conséquences du récit du « faussaire de la cour » sur la transmission du texte d’Hilaire et sur l'historiographie, de la querelle philologique jusqu'à nos jours.

Cet article se propose de démontrer que le texte connu depuis le Moyen Âge sous le titre de « Confession de saint Martin » a été rédigé à la fin du VIIIe siècle. C’est ce que semble prouver la comparaison entre le texte et son hypertexte, à savoir des écrits de Benoît d’Aniane d’une part et du pseudo-Alcuin/Jean de Fécamp d’autre part. Cette concordance permet certainement de rapporter une partie du texte de Jean de Fécamp, que l’on date du XIe siècle, à la fin du VIIIe siècle. La Vita Reverentii, hagiographie normande de date incertaine, aurait alors à son tour emprunté au pseudo-Martin un long passage. Le contenu, les sources et l’origine géographique du texte du pseudo-Martin peuvent indiquer qu’il a été produit dans le contexte de la controverse adoptianiste, dans laquelle l’autorité de saint Martin, patron des Francs par excellence, connu pour avoir été persécuté par les Ariens, pouvait être mobilisée à grand profit.

This article aims to show that the so-called "Confession of saint Martin" was written at the end of the 8th c. It is the result of a comparison of the Confession with its supposed hypertext (Benedict of Aniane and parts of pseudo-Alcuin/Jean of Fécamp's Confessio fidei, which needs a proper edition). A hagiography from Normandy of uncertain datation, the "Vita Reverentii",  has borrowed a piece of the Confession of saint Martin at some point (probably the 11th c.). According to its content, sources and origins, it is likely that the Confessio was written in the context of the Adoptianist quarrel, in which the Franks may have found that the authority of their patron, Martin, who had written nothing but had been persecuted by Arians, was unfortunately missing.

Ratramnus of Corbie (800s-860s) is one of the leading figures of the third generation of the Carolingian Renaissance. Reputed to be the most famous master in Francia (nominatissimus in Francia magister), his work embraces a wide panel of topics such as Eucharist, predestination, the nature of the soul, cynocephaly, degrees of kinship and the guilt of parents who accidentally suffocated their babies. Since the pioneering studies of David Ganz and Georges Folliet, both his hand and the method of his workshop are known. Ratramnus frames his future quotations in his manuscripts with hic-usque tironian notes. Some of the marginal notes written in the margins next to the framed quotations are reused as headings in the final treatise.
Many personal manuscripts matching this method have been identified so far. This paper proposes the identification of a new one. This manuscript, today in Berlin, was used for the preparation of Ratramnus' treatise on predestination (849). The identification provides a starting point for further discussions on how Carolingian scholars work. Modern scholarship tends to identify a way of annotating with a particular scholar or his circle. Florus, with his hooks, provides a perfect case study: a name, a team, a place, a time span. However, others scholars did change method and adapt their technique to specific needs. Only that can explain why we found so few manuscripts annotated by Prudentius of Troyes or Pseudo-Isidore, although they litteraly used hundreds of books.
Ratramnus changed his way of annotating over his career. His basic annotation was a Nota sign, which he used for his treatise on the Eucharist (early 840s) and for his treatise against the Greeks (late 860s). Hic-usque notes are a hapax in his carrier. Why did he use them in the context of the treatise on predestination? Where did he find the idea of using them? What does this hapax reveal of his workshop and of the particular circumstances of the predestination controversy in which he wrote his book? The only historical scenario of the genesis of the De praedestinatione was proposed by Jean-Paul Bouhot in 1976 – before the discovery of the marginal notes. It lays on mere textual basis and asserts that Ratramnus originally wrote the first book of his treatise for Gottschalk, then sent it to the Charles the Bald after receiving his command, and swiftly wrote the second book. This scenario has to be challenged with the help of the new codicological evidence. The two books were composed as a whole : the different shapes of the first and the second book are the consequences of the different matters they deal with.

Over the past decades, the war of succession which tore appart the Carolingian empire in 840-843 has been the focus of a renewed scholarly interest, which put forward notions like publicity (in particular through Nithard’s work), aristocratic identity, fidelity and competition. The "aequa lance" settlement of Verdun and the rule of "fraternitas" eventually reconciled the fidelities owed by the aristocrats to the emperor Lothar with that owed to Louis and Charles. The consequences of that competition reach beyond the Carolingians: the reign of Charles the Bald is often acknowledged as the christening of the French "monarchie contractuelle". 
The competition between Carolingian pretenders was caused, historians argue, by the contradictory successoral settlements of Louis the Pious, which threatened the stability of the fides. On the one hand, magnates certainly seeked to make much of the competition and maximize their profits but, on another hand, these keepers of social order were torn between their fidelities towards different kings, which eventually leveled the legitimacy of the pretenders. This paper focuses on the reaction of the Carolingians to this crisis of fidelity and on how they endeavoured to keep tidy the Carolingian social structure. It also aims to show that Nithard’s History was commissionned by Charles the Bald to restore cohesion in his camp after his alliance with Louis the German in May 841, an alliance which would undermine the fidelity of his men and the legitimacy of his claims.

This paper reconsiders the impact of public opinion on religious controversies in the Carolingian age. Doctrinal debate was by no means limited to the elite circles connected with royal and episcopal power. A wider constituency was involved, as is shown by the well-known controversy on double predestination (840s–60s). During this debate, monks, rural priests and lower clerics read, disputed and circulated treatises and booklets, and questioned the authority of their superiors. The reaction of the clerical elite to the extension of the sphere of debate was ambivalent. A wider discussion was discouraged by a discourse of self-restraint that emphasized the virtue of simplicitas, but also by disciplinary means. Yet dissent was not entirely stifled, so leading churchmen had to convince their subordinates while not officially acknowledging the latter as their equal discussion partners. This required complex strategies of communication, which only become visible by investigating all aspects of such doctrinal debates.
