Drawing upon the entangled biographies of two intellectuals, this article delves deeper into the circulations of a Latin anti-Semitic culture between Italian Fascism and the French right wing. The article sheds light on a Latin type of antisemitism, shaped in a French-Italian political and intellectual context, by uncovering two figures of intermediaries: the couple formed by Paolo Orano and Camille Mallarmé, as they evolved from revolutionary syndicalism to nationalistic interventionism during WWI and until they supported the Fascist totalitarian project. A professor and Fascist deputy, Orano is noteworthy for his 1937 Gli Ebrei in Italia, one of the first pamphlets anticipating the anti-Semitic propaganda of the Fascist regime, while his wife promoted this campaign as the correspondent for the French right wing weekly Je Suis Partout. Claiming to be distinct from Nazi antisemitism, Latin antisemitism relied upon an anti-German hostility and a political instrumentalization of the Catholic tradition. Furthermore, it is emblematic of the inherent tensions between transnational Fascism and French and Italian nationalisms.

Lawrence et Georges Bataille »"Prompted by a new Mediterranean geography: the journal La Renaissance Latine (1902-1905) and the arts." Born in the wake of the Franco-Italian conventions of 1902 and animated by their harbingers, Gabriel Hanotaux and Louis Odéro, this new journal, written in French but distributed internationally, dedicates a great part of its content to the evolution of visual arts, giving at the same time emphasis to the protagonists of a chimeric Mediterranean, the Latinity of which would become the new canon of an innocuous artistic modernism. Within the frame of a complete nationalist downturn, topped by the Barresian and Maurassist leagues and publications in the beginning of that century, the authors of the journal (critics, painters or literary men) aim at defining and redefining the arts of the Mediterranean, through the prism of a “Latin movement” joined by - other than Italy and France - Greece, Spain, Romania and Portugal. In reality it is a very first attempt of recovery of the artistic evolution not devoid of geopolitical and identity criteria, which introduces, long before the interwar period, a Manichaeistic system of artistic hierarchies between “Africa and Europe, Carthage versus Rome, Mohammed versus Christ, Barbarossa versus Charles V”. Drawing the transnational network of the collaborators and the promoted discourses of the journal, we will shed light on the stakes, as well as the limits set (or not) by these imaginary artistic borders of a Latin Mediterranean of the arts, and reveal its protagonists.
