The tomb of Marcus Venerius Secundio was discovered in July 2021 in the necropolis of Porta Sarno at Pompeii. This paper contextualizes it against the backdrop of 1st-c. CE burial customs and social history. The inscription on the pediment shows that the tomb owner was a former public slave who, after manumission, rose to the rank of the Augustales; he was a "custodian" of the temple of Venus, and he organized "Greek and Latin games/performances." This is the first archaeological discovery providing direct evidence of Greek musical and/or theatrical performances at Pompeii. Another peculiarity is that Secundio was inhumed, not cremated, a practice so far unique among adults in Pompeii during this period. The inhumation of Secundio and his titulus sepulcralis can be read as local reflections of the Neronian zeitgeist and shed light on the modes by which cultural trends spread from the capital throughout the empire.

The archaeological remains of a vast and well-preserved
necropolis, which has become the focus of a new interdisciplinary
research project, follow the Via Ostiensis in Rome. These
monumental tombs were continuously used by the middle echelon
from the 2nd century BCE until the 4th century CE, and illustrate
the transition from cremation to inhumation as the preferred burial
custom. Most of the exposed burial spaces retain deposits of human
remains in situ. A new interdisciplinary research project aims to
completely re-examine the entire area and its material, including
human remains, epigraphic material and artefacts.
The Via Ostiensis Necropolis is a privileged site for investigating
the transition of funerary practices, rituals, and mentalities towards
death elicited by Christianity, illustrated most clearly by the shift
from cremation to inhumation. This transition is observable in the
reorganization of the spaces and the funerary architecture, where,
despite the shift from paganism to Christianity, both types of burial
practices coexist, and the later burials respect the sacredness of the
cremations previously deposited.

The casts of Pompeii bear witness to the people who died during the Vesuvius 79 AD eruption. However, studies on the cause of death of these victims have not been conclusive. A previous important step is the understanding of the post-depositional processes and the impact of the plaster in bones, two issues that have not been previously evaluated. Here we report on the anthropological and the first chemical data obtained from the study of six casts from Porta Nola area and one from Terme Suburbane. A non-invasive chemical analysis by portable X-ray fluorescence was employed for the first time on these casts of Pompeii to determine the elemental composition of the bones and the plaster. Elemental profiles were determined providing important data that cross-referenced with anthropological and stratigraphic results, are clearly helpful in the reconstruction of the perimortem and post-mortem events concerning the history of these individuals. The comparative analyses carried out on the bone casts and other collections from burned bones of the necropolis of Porta Nola in Pompeii and Rome Sepolcreto Ostiense, and buried bones from Valencia (Spain), reveal the extent of high temperature alteration and post-depositional plaster contamination. These factors make bioarchaeological analyses difficult but still allow us to support asphyxia as the likely cause of death.

The present work shows the results of the chemical, mineralogical and colorimetric characterisation of the ancient mortars from Silla Islamic Tower (Valencia, Spain) and Fuengirola Castle (Malaga, Spain). The samples were characterised from the mineralogical point of view by X-ray diffractometry and mid-infrared attenuated total reflection spectroscopy, while portable energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry were employed to obtain the concentrations of major and trace elements, including rare earth elements. Data analysis through multivariate statistics was used to evaluate features to discriminate among the mortars from the different construction phases and to classify undated samples. Finally, colour features of powdered and intact samples were characterised by smartphone photo processing and with a Vis-spectrophotometer as reference technique to evaluate the effectiveness of smartphones for archaeometric studies of historic mortars. The analytical results permitted the classification of most undated samples from Silla and evidenced the presence of peculiar chemical characteristics in some samples from Fuengirola. Imaging data for powdered samples showed a good potential as a reliable, cheap and non-destructive fast method to characterise mortars and carry out the study of construction phases in historical complexes.

Since 2015 the research project at Porta Nola has explored different aspects of the necropolis ranging from the excavation of individual tombs to the study of the plaster casts made of victims of the AD 79 eruption. The aim has been to draw together the various strands of information, including archival material and publications, in order to provide a new synthesis of the necropolis. The 2017 season of excavation focused on two areas within the necropolis: the burials of Praetorians identified during the 1970s clearance of the area between the city wall and road which ran alongside the city wall; the area immediately north of the tomb of Obellius Firmus (excavated in 2015, Kay et al., 2016), between the rear wall of the tomb and a tufa wall (possibly delimiting the funerary area) 5 m to the north.

This study compares data from two funerary archaeology projects in Pompeii (Porta Nola and Porta Sarno) and Rome’s Via Ostiensis necropolises. Both sites offer exceptional conditions for analyzing well-preserved cremation graves, facilitating the creation of comprehensive databases highlighting grave and individual aspects. Statistical analysis of these databases yields innovative, comparable data crucial for interpreting funerary rituals and materials within urns. A multidisciplinary approach combining archaeological techniques with bioanthropology, archaeobotany, zooarchaeology, and geochemistry reveals insights into cremation processes, bone gathering, and funerary deposition. Osteological and X-Ray Fluorescence analyses provide data on cremation temperatures, biological profiles, and paleopathologies. Comparing data from Pompeii and Via Ostiensis enables testing hypotheses about funerary practices and rituals. Statistical analyses also pave the way for gender-based archaeological studies, exploring potential relationships between funerary customs, grave goods, and the sex of cremated individuals to reconstruct the social identity of ancient Romans.

This communication presents the research, exhumation and analysis carried out so far in pit 95 of the Paterna cemetery, rows 3 and 12 of the Castellón cemetery and pits 9, 28, 30, 37, 38 and 40 of the Alicante cemetery. Each of these cemeteries presents different situations and casuistry, which require different procedures and methodologies. Pit 95 in Paterna is a small quadrangular space with 45 bodies dumped on the same day. In the Castellón cemetery, rows 3 and 12 are very large pits and the victims are arranged in an orderly system.
Our work has two fundamental objectives. The first is to identify the victim in order to return them to their relatives. This requires an exhaustive methodology that allows us to recognise and individualise the bodies and associate personal objects and clothing with each individual.
Anthropological analysis makes it possible to obtain the biological profile and the particular anatomical characteristics, dental prostheses, traumatic injuries, but also pathologies caused by postural stress or physical activity that may help the identification.
It is of the utmost importance to carry out a procedure for the selection, preparation and storage of samples for the extraction of the genetic sequence, with the aim of obtaining positive results in DNA matching.
The second objective is to know the circumstances that the victims suffered up to the moment they were thrown into the pit. For this, it is essential to apply a methodology that allows us to record the anatomical positions, perimortem fractures and the location of the bullets. The presence of ligatures on the wrists and injuries that could have been
caused by torture have also been noted.

A singular tomb in Pompeii. The inhumation and mummification of Marcus Venerius Secundio
The tomb of Marcus Venerius Secundio was discovered in 2021 during the excavations of the Porta Sarno necropolis in Pompeii. The tomb’s inscription shows that the defunct was a former public slave who after his manumission rose to the rank of Augustales. The text also mentions that he was “custodian” of the temple of Venus, as well as the fact that he organized Greek and Latin performances. The particularity of the tomb is related to the inhumed and partially mummified remains of Secundio, a practice that was unusual among adults during the first century CE, being cremation the common funeral rite.
Inside hermetically sealed tomb chamber, the remains of a male over 60 years old were found. Although several traumatic injuries on the right side of the body were identified. Secundio clearly got an excellent care allowing him to successfully recover his health. Despite having been enslaved, no signs of biomechanical stress were found.
Hair and left ear tissues were preserved and the body was covered by an organic substance. It seems that this shroud over the body, along with the anaerobic environment caused by the sealing of the tomb, enhanced the mummification of the cadaver.
This presentation explains why Secundio was inhumed and partially mummified instead of being cremated. However further analytical studies will obtain more information and develop hypotheses about the mummified processes that took actions during the burial of this important personage of Pompeian society.

INVESTIGATING THE ARCHAEOLOGY OF DEATH IN POMPEII
The necropolis of Porta Nola and Porta Sarno at Pompeii offers an exceptional opportunity to study the population of Pompeii, as well as more broadly wider trends in the Roman population. An examination of the necropolis will permit an investigation of the people’s physical and social characteristics, as well as their habits and customs, and how they lived, died and were buried.
This will be achieved through the excavation of a cross section of burials, osteological analysis and the study of the casts of the fugitives of Pompeii. At the necropolis of Porta Nola and Porta Sarno different levels of social strata are represented around the cemetery, from the monumental tombs, to the burials of the Praetorian guards, to the so-called poor graves alongside the city wall. The study of these funerary areas allow to understand the management and evolution of the funeral space according to urbanization, religion and the history of the city. The management of the death is also an element of definition and identity of a certain social class as faithful reflection of the status of the alive ones, because the biological and cultural dimension have an evident prolongation after the death.
The project is also studying the plaster casts made of 15 individuals who were caught during the volcanic eruption of AD 79 inside of which are preserved the skeletons of the individual. The casts, currently being conserved as part of the Grande Progetto Pompei.

The research project focused its attention on the necropolis outside Porta Nola in Pompeii. We will discuss the results, still preliminary, of the study of Obellius Firmus tomb, consisting in a rectangular enclosure around the burial place, and, in particular, of the decorated bone fragments found within attributed to his funeral bed. We will present also the anthropologic investigation conducted also with modern technologies on the casts of fugitives discovered in 1975 near the necropolis outside Porta Nola, and still totally unknown. In particular, besides the direct examination of the bones visible through the plaster, a survey with laser scanner and X-Ray examination were conducted.

SSSB 2017
A three day interdisciplinary conference hosted by the Department of Archaeology and the Centre for Learning Anatomical Sciences at the University of Southampton.
This conference aims to cover a wide range of areas related to death, anatomy, attitudes to the body, mortuary practices, and more. We aim to cover various aspects of death through presentations, discussion panels, and tailored workshops.
ANTHROPOLOGICAL ANALYSIS AND FACIAL RECONSTRUCTION OF THE POMPEII VICTIMS
ARCHAEOLOGY OF DEATH IN POMPEII
British School at Rome, Colegio de Doctores y Licenciados de Valencia, Museo de Prehistoria de Valencia.
The anthropologists and archaeologists of the research project of the necropolis of Porta Nola, Pompeii, directed by Llorenç Alapont (CDLV), Stephen Kay (BSR) and Rosa Albiach (MuVIM), have been carrying out the study of skeletons preserved in casts since 2011.
The bodies of individuals preserved in casts in Pompeii are some of the most important archaeological remains of the world because they represent a faithful image, full of the realiaties the victims of Pompeii during the eruption. The casts are a great fortune for archeology and anthropology because in addition to preserving the image of bodies, they have preserved the skeletons of the individuals, and in many cases jewelry, instruments, and objects that they carried with them.
Noninvasive techniques must be used on the invaluable casts. Exposed bones can be studied using conventional anthropological methods, but the bones hidden inside can only be studied by radiological analysis.
The problem is the density of the plaster; in limbs or crania, for example, conventional X-Ray analysis gives satisfactory results, but in other parts, the plaster’s density precludes diferentiation between bones and other objects. This problem is solved with computerized three-dimensional tomography. The TAC gives a three-dimensional image of the skeleton with high resolution allowing observation and analysis of miniscule details of the bones, so significant measurements can be taken.
The anthropological and paleopathological study of the victims of Pompeii preserved in casts, along with diverse modern techniques like laser scanning, photogrammetry, TAC, etc. allow estimation of sex, age, physical constitution, diseases caused by daily activity, paleo-diet, physical appearance, facial reconstruction, and the last moments of life in Pompeii.

Espais d’alt valor natural i ecològic.

d’ocupació i organització territorials.
