Aportamos nuevos datos sobre el poblamiento del recinto sur de la villa de Algeciras entre los siglos VI y XIV. Sobre las ruinas de un edificio bizantino estudiamos un cementerio de época visigoda, escasos restos una maqbara tardomedieval y las primeras evidencias de viviendas de los pobladores cristianos. Su conservación se ha visto condicionada por su ubicación en una ladera de colina que en el siglo XX fue nivelada y en parte desmontada.

Desde una perspectiva histórico-arqueológica, esto es, manejando información de diversas intervenciones arqueológicas, documentación histórica de archivos y cartografía histórica, se plantea cómo el agua ha sido pieza fundamental a la hora de elegir y desarrollar los distintos asentamientos que se han producido en Alicante desde el Neolítico a época moderna, centrándonos sobre todo en la prehistoria (asentamiento del Tossal de les Basses) y en época tardo-antigua e islámica (laderas del Benacantil), éste último, el espacio en donde luego se consolidó el hábitat hasta nuestro días, subsistiendo hasta bien entrado el siglo XIX con el agua de las mismas fuentes naturales usadas por los musulmanes desde el s. VIII.

Los adjetivos peyorativos tales como caótico, desordenado o anárquico han sido los más frecuentemente utilizados
por la tradición historiográfica a la hora de describir el urbanismo de la ciudad islámica. Dichas características,
cuya presencia en estos asentamientos se atribuía a la supuesta ineficacia del estado islámico y de la
sociedad musulmana para gestionar el espacio de forma coherente –entendida como sinónimo de ortogonal–,
propició el surgimiento y la consolidación de un concepto de ciudad que se definía únicamente como contraposición
a la urbe clásica y según sus carencias con respecto a ésta. Sin embargo, la documentación arqueológica,
cada vez más abundante, de las modificaciones topográficas experimentadas por las ciudades europeas durante
los siglos tardoantiguos, está permitiendo redefinir las pautas metodológicas de aproximación a los asentamientos
islámicos medievales en Occidente.
En este capítulo pretendemos recorrer de forma sucinta el proceso por el cual el conocimiento arqueológico
de la etapa tardoantigua en Hispania, cada vez más solvente y preciso, permite matizar los juicios hasta ahora
emitidos sobre medinas islámicas. Los avances arqueológicos relativos a la Tardoantigüedad hispana sitúan el
germen urbanístico de las ciudades andalusíes en las civitas, de cuya configuración topográfica son, en muchos
casos, herederas directas. En esta trayectoria prestamos especial atención a Córdoba, cuya existencia dilatada
en el tiempo, sumada a su condición de capital de al-Andalus, la convierten en un ejemplo ineludible para comprender
esta dinámica de cambio y evolución urbana.

More than 20 years after presenting his first interpretation of the mosaic from the House of Aion in a paper entitled “Uwagi na temat mozaiki z Domu Aiona w Nea Paphos (Cypr)” (Meander 9/10, 1987, p. 421-438, in Polish, and translated to English: « The Immortality of the Human Soul and the Dionysiac Mysteries in the 4th Century Allegory [in Connection with the Interpretation of the Mosaic from the “House of Aion” at Paphos in Cyprus]»), where he proposed reading the five mythological panels (1. Leda and Zeus; 2. Dionysus on Mount Nysa; 3. The Dionysian thiasos; 4. Apollo and Marsyas; 5. The Apotheosis of Cassiopeia) as an allegory of the destiny of the human soul and body, starting with conception and ending with the liberation of the soul and its apotheosis, the author now enhances his initial interpretation with numerous reflections concerning the historical context of this work of art, created in the years 320-360.
If, according to the author, the mosaic is a “Hymn” in honour of the pagan gods, Man (his soul) and his place in the (pagan) universe, then at the same time it polemicises with the Christian faith and its God, Jesus Christ.
The author puts forward numerous new solutions relating to the mosaic’s iconography and iconology. Analysis of the mosaic also leads him to propose a solution to the as-yet unanswered question regarding the absence of images of the crucified Christ in Christian art of the 3rd and 4th centuries, up until 420/430, when the first images of Christ on the cross appear.

"This paper proposes three new (and tentatively, another two) identifications of sundials in Middle Eastern mosaics of the 5th – 8th century. The author discusses a vignette from the Holy Martyrs’ Church at Tayibat al-Imâm, central Syria, a mosaic panel from the tomb of Georgia and Theodosia in Jerusalem, two
vignettes of Sebastis and Kastron Mefaa from the St. Stephan’s Church at Umm al-Rasas, and a vignette of Jerusalem from the St. George’s Church at Madaba. These mosaics date, respectively, to 442, to the reign of Justinian (527 –565), and to the Byzantine Umayyad era (718). According to the author, these are probably the latest representations of sundials known to date from the Late Antiquity. Until this study, only six representations of sundials on mosaics from the Roman period were known. This paper adds three new items and two hypothetical ones from Byzantine times. It also offers an interpretation of the function of the famous column in Jerusalem, shown on the map of Madaba and the mega-vignette of the Holy City.

This paper discusses the position of the pagan 'Other' in medieval thought, arguing that although Paganism was alien to the Christian, churchmen wanted above all to bring the pagans into the Christian fold: they were part of God's creation, and they had to be preached to before the Last Times. The Other, therefore, had to allow the possibility of integration. As a result the Pagan Other in the early Middle Ages was an ambiguous category, and not a clear demarcation of difference.

This paper discusses the context of a Late Roman solidus hoard found in the Casa delle Vestali on the Forum Romanum in the City of Rome. The hoard consists of 397 solidi, Late Roman gold coins. Most of the hoard consists of uncirculated solidi struck in the name of the western Roman emperor Procopius Anthemius (AD 467-472). By means of situating the hoard within the context of the reign of Anthemius and the collapse of the western Roman Empire, the aim of this paper is to discern if the coins in the Vestal hoard can be related to other contemporary coin hoards by means of numismatic typology, which could add information as to why Anthemius’ reign is considered such an unmitigated failure and why the Empire collapsed soon after his murder. The author examines the composition of the hoard and compares the content to other contemporary solidus hoards in the Mediterranean, Belgium, Poland and Scandinavia. The author argues that the comparison shows that the Vestal hoard is not part of a larger network but that the hoard constitutes the remains of an isolated occurrence – as initially suggested by its unusual composition and location.

No serious scholar believes that migration of various kinds did not play a significant role in events of the first millennium AD, but the extent and importance of any large-group migration is particularly controversial. This paper seeks to think again about this highly controversial dimension of the subject area. Given that neither revisionist accounts of the operation of group identities, nor archaeological materials offer any sure guidance on the matter, it suggests that some of the available historical materials are worth taking more seriously, and explores the kind of picture that emerges from them.

This paper proposes a new interpretation of the famous fourth century A.D. mosaic of the “Seven Sages” and the “Anger of Achilles”. Discovered in Merida in 1982, this mosaic was previously analyzed and interpreted by J.M. Aharez Martinez and M.-H. Quet. The occurrence of these two iconographic themes in one mosaic tends the author to compare the description of the “Anger of Achilles” in the first book of the Iliad with the maxims of the Seven Sages of Greece. The study of both written and iconographic sources shows that he image of the “Anger of Achilles” evokes allusively the moral precepts of the Seven Sages. The mosaic constitutes therefore an example of the practical use of “artificiosa memoria “.

The mosaic from Sheikh Zuweid on the western coast of North Sinai, discovered in 1913, as well as the mosaic brought to light in 1919 at Vinon near Aix-en-Provence in southern France had to wait until the end of the 20th century for scholarly studies to focus again on their iconography, but also their iconological program. It is the reading of this program that one can truly call sensational. The mosaic from Sinai consists of three panels: Hippolytus and Phaedra, a Dionysian cortege and an inscription surrounded with motifs referring to the fauna and flora of a Nilotic landscape as well as to iconography of the seasons of Spring and Fall. The mosaic from Vinon also consists of three pictures: Dionysus offering Ikarios the grapevine, the Three Graces and a panel depicting a voracious goat defiling the gift of Dionysus. Inscriptions accompany both the mosaics, in Latin at Sheikh Zued and in Greek at Vinon.
Numerous apotropaic symbols and inscriptions are known, but never before has a mythological picture been interpreted as apotropaic. The latest research has shown that the owners of the respective estates had chosen mythological themes in order to protect them and their property from the Evil Eye and Hatred. Dionysian motifs are associated with the putative function of the rooms, where banquets with music and dancing must have been held, and wine must have flowed in abundance. The allusion to the abundance of the Nile was meant to ensure the prosperity and wealth of the house, in similarity to the Dionysian motifs as a matter of fact. Dionysus, Heracles and Venus were patrons of the houses. The interpretation of the two mosaics takes advantage of studies in the field of the history of mentality of the communities standing on the threshold of post-classical times. At the same time, it constitutes a huge step forward in the understanding of this category of finds. The two mosaics confirm what Artemidoros of Daldis (2nd century AD) had to say about the status of pictures: that they could be synonymous in meaning (see: M.T. La célèbre mosaïque de Cheikh Zouède, situé au nord-ouest du Sinaï, ainsi que celle de Vinon dans la Gaule Narbonaise ont été découvertes dans les années dix du XXe siècle. Depuis leurs mises à jour jusqu’à la fin du siècle dernier, elles devaient attendre deux réexamens scientifiques qui ont apportés une analyse iconographique plus complète ainsi que deux nouvelles lectures iconologiques que l’on peut sans doute considerer comme sensationelles !
La mosaïque de Cheikh Zouède est composée de trois tableaux superposés. Deux panneaux représentent des scenes mythologiques: procession dionysiaque et Hippolyte et Phèdre. La troisième image comporte une inscription de bienvenue bordée au-dessus et au-dessous d’animaux et de plantes; une allusion aux scènes nilotiques et à la symbolique printanière et automnale.
La mosaïque de Vinon est également composée de trois tableaux qui sont cependant juxtaposés. Ils représentent, au centre, les trois Grâces et deux scènes à caractère dionysiaques. Celle de gauche représente le don de la vigne (grappes de raisins) par Dionysos à Icarios et celle de droite, le sacrilège de la vigne par un bouc. Les deux mosaïques sont accompagnées par des inscriptions en grec et latin. Elles sont datées à la première moitié du Ve siècle.
On connais plusieurs inscriptions, images et symboles de caractère apothropaïque. C’est pourtant la première fois que des images mythologiques ont dévoilées aux chercheurs leurs sens prophylactique et apotropaïque. Les propriétaires de ces deux résidences ornées de belles mosaïques ont choisis ces thèmes mythologiques pour protéger et écarter le Mauvais Œil et l’Envie. Les sujets dionysiaques dans les salles à manger évoquent probablement des fêtes joyeuses arrosées de vin où la danse et la musique constituaient des éléments essentiels. Par contre, l’abondance nilotique évoquait sans doute le bonheur et l’opulence des dons de la Nature sur les tables de la maison; cette signification concernait certainement aussi les scènes dionysiaques. Les maisons ont été protégées par Dionysos, Héraclès et Vénus.
Pour interpréter ces deux œuvres, les auteurs ont utilisé des recherches sur “l’histoire de la mentalité” des sociétés administrées par les Romains. La lecture de ces deux mosaïques confirme ce que l’on vient de découvrir en étudiant le célèbre texte d’Artémidore de Daldis (IIe siècle) sur les images synonimiques (cf. M.T. En el presente artículo abordamos el estudio de dos tenantes-aras de altar visigodos, procedentes de Camarena y El Puerto de San Vicente (Toledo), realizando un exhaustivo análisis morfológico, decorativo e iconográfico de los mismos, comparándolos, a su vez, con el resto de piezas de esta tipología existentes en la provincia de Toledo, para finalmente intentar situarlos cronológicamente, a pesar de las limitaciones que ofrece el hecho de ser restos descontextualizados.

Vídeo explicativo de la presentación del mismo título, donde se desarrolla la descripción de los ejemplos propuestos, y se concluye la hipótesis de trabajo de la identificación de la fortaleza gijonesa del cerro de Cimadevilla, con la tipología de los fuertes militares auxiliares.

"Abstract: This paper will address various issues and from different perspectives. First, it will carry out a historiographical analysis of the contributions have been made from the La Rioja area in the field of early medieval archaeology. A brief contextual analysis will bring us closer to how and why the state in which these studies are currently in this area in particular. Furthermore, using the main works and sites as a thread, we can get closer to an updated analysis as concise as possible in different thematic study. Once this process, it is necessary to propose some reflections and personal considerations to propose lines of work in the near future and a qualitative leap, in our opinion, of these archaeological studies of the early Middle Ages in La Rioja.

Resumen: En este trabajo se van a abordar diferentes problemáticas y desde diversas perspectivas. En primer lugar, se va a llevar a cabo un análisis historiográfico de las aportaciones que se han hecho desde el ámbito riojano en el campo de la Arqueología altomedieval. Un breve análisis contextual nos acercará al cómo y porqué del estado en que actualmente se encuentran estos estudios en este territorio en concreto. Por otro lado, utilizando los principales trabajos y yacimientos a modo de hilo conductor, podremos acercarnos a un diagnóstico actualizado lo más sintético posible en sus diferentes temáticas de estudio. Una vez realizado todo este proceso, resulta necesario plantear algunas reflexiones y consideraciones personales para proponer líneas de trabajo que en un futuro cercano posibilitasen un salto cualitativo, en nuestra opinión, en estos estudios arqueológicos de la Alta Edad Media en La Rioja.

Se propone un análisis de la arrianización del reino suevo tras la llegada de Ajax en el año 466. Para ello se estudiará la evolución religiosa de este pueblo y se medirá el alcance y las consecuencias de las medidas de Ajax a partir de una fuente excepcional, como es la carta que Vigilio le envía al obispo bracarense Profuturo. La conclusión será que la arrianización del reino suevo supuso una serie de alteraciones doctrinales y rituales, aunque su duración no puede retrasarse más allá del año en que se redacta la misiva que justifica la redacción del antedicho documento.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to show a few cases of Late Antiquity fortifications selected in Burgos and La Rioja regions. The presence of roads at the bottom of these hill forts means, in my opinion, the crucial impact that these sites imply in the territorial configuration.
This occur, when these type of fortifications are built, through the visual control of the roads and the physical and ideological control (or at least the attempt) that signify their own presence in some points of these territories (clausurae). Finally, only remark that this particular mode of territorial organization is very specific; isn't general for all fortifications, that represent a lot of different types of them, not only to this area, but also for the whole Iberian Peninsula.

Resumen: En esta aportación se van a analizar algunos (pocos) casos concretos seleccionados de fortificaciones tardoantiguas que se encuentran en los territorios riojano y burgalés. La presencia de vías de comunicación a los pies de ese tipo de fortificaciones delata, en mi opinión, la importancia que tuvieron tales asentamientos en la articulación territorial. Pensamos que esa vertebración se hizo, allí donde estas fortificaciones se construyeron, a través de la vigilancia y control visual de tales vías de comunicación, por medio del control físico e ideológico (o el intento de los mismos) que supone la instalación y presencia de dichas fortificaciones en puntos concretos (clausurae) de esos territorios. A modo de conclusión hay que decir que este tipo de estructuración territorial y su materialización por medio de tales fortificaciones, es una manifestación, muy particular eso sí, de las muchas y variadas formas en las que se presentan las fortificaciones tardoantiguas y altomedievales no sólo en este territorio en concreto, si no peninsular en general.

La tradición oral ofrece un conjunto de prácticas versificatorias, musicales y festivas que deben ser adecuadamente valoradas y correctamente contextualizadas. Los cantos de pedir aguinaldo entre Navidad y Año Nuevo constituyen un caso paradigmático. Del consenso de sus rasgos (rítmico-métricos, rítmico-melódicos, festivos, etnográficos) surge la necesidad de un remonte hasta la Tardoantigüedad, lo que abre paso a una importante conclusión interdisciplinar: la cultura de tradición oral europea ha de considerarse, en esencia, una proyección de la cultura tardolatina, con lo que tal horizonte conlleva para cada área de estudio. En relación a la versificación tradicional se insiste en su cardinal naturaleza rítmica (conjuntando ordenación acentual y oscilación del cómputo silábico).

RESUMEN: El poblado tardoantiguo de El Castillón (Santa Eulalia de Tábara, Zamora) se sitúa en una zona fronteriza entre los reinos suevo y visigodo, desarrollándose su ocupación desde el siglo V al VII d.C., controlando una importante zona de vado del río Esla. Este yacimiento arqueológico nos ofrece una valiosa información para conocer este tipo de asentamientos rurales gracias a la gran cantidad de hallazgos efectuados, localizándose diferentes zonas de trabajo artesanal y residencial.
El estudio e investigación, que se viene realizando en este yacimiento desde el año 2007 hasta la actualidad, nos permite tener una amplia visión del poblamiento tardoantiguo entre los siglos V-VII d.C., así como las diferentes reestructuraciones y evolución que ha sufrido este lugar, y su inmediata relación con los recursos adyacentes, principalmente con las explotaciones de mineral de hierro, para su posterior procesado y fabricación de elementos metálicos que hemos podido registrar en la zona metalúrgica.

Sa pratique (conuersatio) décline un itinéraire spirituel (iter arduus) qui mène au repos (quies) de l’intelligence inexplicable et devant laquelle on se tient dans le silence du sacré invisible, dans l’attente du jour du Seigneur.

A lo largo de su historia, Toledo ha sido una paradoja incesante de conocimiento y desconocimiento; aun sabiéndose tanto, seguimos sin tener una noción clara de ella. Algunos autores han intentado moldear una imagen de la ciudad basándose en generalidades para poder explicar sus particularidades, pero esos intentos, aun acercándonos un poco a su realidad, son bastante parcos, sin dar más información.
(...) Entre los años 2012 y 2014, realizamos una intervención arqueológica en esta vivienda, identificando un nivel de uso de finales del S. IV o comienzos del S. V, fecha en la que se produce una catástrofe en esta zona de la ciudad, lo que originó a posteriori una labor de saneamiento y desescombro. La práctica totalidad del material arqueológico recuperado en este estrato, muestra sobre su superficie huellas del fuego, y algunas de las piezas recuperadas están casi carbonizadas debido a las altas temperaturas alcanzadas. Abunda material cerámico de importación, tanto africano como del Mediterráneo oriental, así como de Italia. La Identificación de estas ánforas, desconocidas en Toledo hasta la fecha, nos está insinuando la gran vitalidad que parece haber tenido la ciudad, siendo partícipe de la "globalidad mediterránea" del momento.

En el marco de las prospecciones llevadas a cabo en el yacimiento madrileño de La
Marañosa entre los años 2015 y 2016, se pretende dar a conocer una parte de los
materiales hallados, en este caso un interesante conjunto de vidrios. La tipología de estos
y las importaciones halladas, nos aportan una cronología que comprende los siglos V, VI
d.C. y comienzos del s. VII d.C. Poner estos materiales en relación con otros contextos
similares en la región puede ayudarnos a establecer posibles relaciones entre
asentamientos en una época tan interesante como poco conocida como es la
Tardoantigüedad. El conjunto está formado en su mayoría por piezas que formarían parte
de la vajilla de mesa (cuencos y escudillas), además de otros elementos.

The late Antique mosaic of Orpheus decorated a small room, approximately 18 m2 in area, connected with two even smaller ones, in 4 m2 and the other 2 m2 in area, belonging most likely to a small funerary chapel (or tomb) discovered in the ancient necropolis by the Damascene Gate in Jerusalem; it was discovered in 1901 by H. Vincent.
The author proposes a new interpretation of the iconographic program of the Orpheus myth used by wealthy Christians in a sepulchral context (see Olszewski M.T. «Orphée endeuillé de la mosaïque funéraire de Jérusalem», in Rey Mimoso-Ruiz, B. ed., Actes du colloque «Orphée entre Soleil et ombre», à l’Institut Catholique de Toulouse du 16 au 17 novembre 2007, Inter Lignes, numéros spécial – mars 2008, pp. 205-214, 226). He also proposes a new interpretation of the role Orpheus played in Roman funerary art, concentrating on the importance of the play on words and the visual and textual punning that was popular in ancient art and especially in funerary art. He rejects the popular interpretation of Orpheus as Christ in the Roman catacombs and proposes to interpret the image as that of Orpheus, bard of the departed souls, without any ahistorical connection with Christ. The program of the mosaic from Jerusalem is thus explained as a play on the words Orpheus-orphanos and Chiron (Chi-Rho) and Pan [Παν(τοκράτωρ)].The frequently used Christian funerary formula of resting in peace, Christ or the Lord corresponds
perfectly with the mood created around the mythical bard.
Orpheus’ universal role as singer and musician moving even the most stony of hearts, extolling the beloved departed, is absolutely justified in the context of a 6th-century Christian tomb. Orpheus is a popular and neutral figure, meaning that in effect it does not constitute a threat to Christian theology and can be tolerated by the educated Christians of Jerusalem.
