In this book the author offers us the first historical biography of Priscillian, a controversial figure of great importance for the history of the West, who until now has been considered by the different authors who have approached his figure as a heretic, reformer, apocryphal martyr or non-conformist Christian. The book also analyses the complex questions of his birthplace, the location of his burial place and the dating of the various episodes of his life, using the voices of the protagonists of the period in which Priscillian lived and making use of all the sources available to reconstruct his biography.

In this paper we introduce an advance on some preliminary reflections that configure the identity of the Roman Asturian population, that occupied the villae of the transmontane Asturian territory during the Late Roman Empire. Through the study of the classical sources, that allude to this people in the Northwest of the Iberian Peninsula, we combine the results together with the spatial analysis of the territory and the mapping of the rural villae (that were distributed throughout this territory). With all of that, we interpret some guidelines that identified the character and personality of the first Asturian Romans. The territory of Asturias was conquered by Rome after the Cantabrian Wars during 29–19 B.C.

The study of Christianity in this region is a fundamental theme to understand the historical dynamics of this province and also the later transformations. Although the study of the many Roman villas in Gallaecia is unfortunately still far behind today, we know some elements that we can associate with Christianity (and perhaps priscillianism) that have been found in rural housing contexts. Precisely for this rea- son it is essential to analyze the dating of these finds, their context, and try to examine the beginnings of Christianity in the region using all the available data. In this work we will analyze all the archaeological finds found from the villas of Gallaecia that can offer interesting information about the origin of Christianity in this province, with the aim of bringing new light to the study of this topic, not forgetting the role played by priscillianism in this area.

Hercules has been, without a doubt, one of the most revered mythological figures in the Greco-Roman world since the emergence of accounts of his exploits. Courage, bravery, and physical strength were some of the virtues associated with the hero, a reason which explains the adoption of his attributes in the official representations of emperors of the High Imperial era, such as Commodus, and the Low Imperial era, such as Maximian. The appeal radiated by the figure of Hercules also reached many Roman aristocrats, who held important public positions and spent their leisure time in retreat at their luxurious villae and domus. Evidence of this can be seen in the dissemination throughout the empire of mosaics with mythological representations of the hero. In this work, we will review the mosaic representations of Hercules documented to date in the villae and domus spaces across the empire, to later focus on the Hispania case.

In 385 AD, Augusta Treverorum bore witness to the trial of Priscillian and a number of his followers. The cruel sentence failed to have the deterrent effect that the most fanatical representatives of Christian orthodoxy had expected: at that time a profound schism was affecting the churches of Hispania.
It was at this time when Gallaecia became especially significant for the followers of the unfortunate Abulae episcopus, becoming the main bastion of Priscillianism in the known world. In this paper we explore the theories expounded by researchers to explain this unique phenomenon, scrutinising the available sources, analysing the known archaeological evidence that remains in modern-day Galicia, and finally we will present our own interpretation of the reasons that allowed Priscillianism to spread throughout Gallaecia in the latter part of the fourth century AD.

Since Louis Duchesne advanced the idea that the remains of Priscillian could perhaps rest in the grave of the Apostle St. James, several specialists and dilettanti have signposted a number of different places that could have taken his lifeless body. The different hypothesis have been lacking in scientific rigor, so too often an enigmatic archaeological site dating from the fourth century CE, or the presence of a tomb with this chronology, are considered enough reasons to enlist those places to this honourable cause. Yet this problem has not been so far addressed with objectivity, and the few documentary references, as well as the silence of the archaeology seem insurmountable obstacles...

There are not few characters whose actions or works in times of Priscillian, after his death or even until the middle of the seventh century left patent their disaffection by the famous Avila bishop and his followers. In this paper we chronologically analyze the anti-priscilianism history from the first news known -the complain of Bishop Hyginus from Cordoba-, up to the disdain towards the movement expressed by Braulius from Zaragoza in his letter to Fructuosus from Braga, when priscilianism was already just a memory.

Following the enactment of Gratian’s rescript, Priscillianists were expelled from the episcopal sees they had so eagerly achieved. Given the seriousness of their situation, they decided to march to Rome in the hope that, by presenting themselves in person before the Pope Damaso, they could reverse the position they were in. Although Sulpicius Severus’s account provides little information about the route followed by the Priscillianists, we believe that it is possible to offer a plausible reconstruction of the path that led Priscillian and his companions to the Eternal City. In this task, we will take account of every source traditionally employed for the study of Priscillianism, as well as information provided by the main itineraria known in Roman times. [Author]

Recent excavations in the site of Villa del Casale at Piazza Armerina, conducted by Sapienza University in Rome and Kore University in Enna under the direction of Prof. Patrizio Pensabene, have been found the remains of the rooms of a frigidarium. This frigidarium is a large rectangular room, with a polychrome geometric mosaic floor, bounded on the north side by two small square rooms and a semi-circular bathtub for cold water baths with mosaic decorations. During the sixth century A.D the frigidarium had lost its function and was transformed into productive or residential area.

The importance that the Priscilianist movement had in the history of the Late Antique Hispania contrasts with the meager presence of archaeological remains that today can be reliably linked back to Priscilian and his adherents. To outline an archaeo- logy of Priscilianism arises from the start as a challenging and very ambitious task, which without doubt explains the lack of rigorous studies on the subject. In this paper we will try to fill this gap, analizing those elements of material culture that can be linked with Priscilianism. We will conclude our work with an analysis of the amulet born by Priscilian.
