Spatantike

Today, the panel painting characterizes our understanding of the medium of painting, with the representation of human beings being one of its most important tasks. The technical requirements, conditions and the limiting factors that led to the start of panel painting and its further development are the subjects of this interdisciplinary and epoch-spanning research project. The history of the development of the panel painting will be scrutinized by examining representative examples from antiquity, the early and high Middle Ages. The project focuses on the execution of flesh tones: Which techniques were chosen in order to achieve certain effects at particular times? How was traditional knowledge from antiquity adapted? Is there any correlation between technique and either the function or the original location of a painting? How are social changes and ideological shifts reflected?

Clothing and outward appearance as a means of expressing individual and collective identity were of great importance in Late Antiquity. This publication is the first interdisciplinary overview of source material and provides a critical view of opposing statements on the value of written sources, images, and archaeological finds on habitus barbarus  . Based on these sources, the book develops not only a new perspective on the meaning of “barbaric” clothing but also sheds new light on the Late Roman “barbarians” themselves.

Die nördlich der Alpen oft seit der Mittelkaiserzeit kontinuierlich genutzten Bestattungsplätze weisen ihre größte Belegungsdichte um die Limeskastelle und im 4. Jh. auf. Die meisten enden spätestens im 5. Jh. Im Verlauf des 6. Jhs. gleichen sich westlich der Enns die Grabausstattungen jenen Bayerns allmählich an und konzentrieren sich auf den oberösterreichischen und salzburgischen Zentralraum.
Für das spätere Karantanien fehlen sowohl um die großen Zentralorte Virunum und Teurnia die für Ufernoricum kennzeichnenden Nekropolen des 4. Jhs. Beim derzeitigen Forschungsstand ist das Phänomen nicht erklärbar, besonders in Anbetracht der Belegungsdichte in den beiden folgenden Jahrhunderten. Die Aufgabe der Zentralorte und der sie umgebenden Friedhöfe erfolgt rund drei Generationen später als an der Donau. 592 war das Gebiet bei einem Einfall des eben eingesetzten Bayernherzogs Tassilo I. (591-610) jedenfalls schon eine Provincia Sclaborum.
Für die folgenden eineinhalb Jahrhunderte wird das Fortleben spätantiker Bestattungssitten in Form weitgehend beigabenloser Körpergräber im weiteren Umland der ehemaligen Zentralorte diskutiert. Dies passt zur hohen Integrationsfähigkeit slawischer Gesellschaften passt, in denen Menschen unterschiedlicher Abstammung frei leben konnten und keine Abgaben zu leisten verpflichtet waren. Da dieses Modell auch für die provinzialen Unterschichten Anziehungskraft besaß, verfiel die komplexe Arbeitsteilung der Spätantike und mit ihr Kirchenorganisation, Staatlichkeit, Fernhandel und Schriftlichkeit. Sollte die Belegungsdichte der spätantiken und merowingerzeitlichen Gräberfelder die tatsächliche demographische Situation spiegeln, so ist nördlich der Alpen dichtere Besiedlung vorauszusetzen als in Binnennoricum. Bei einer stark bäuerlich orientierten Wirtschaft, die sich von der römischen Villenwirtschaft zu einer prähistorisch anmutenden Subsistenzwirtschaft zurück entwickelte, mögen die besseren naturräumlichen Voraussetzungen in Oberösterreich und Salzburg eine Rolle gespielt haben.

Im Rahmen verschiedener Forschungsprojekte wurden metallische Fundstücke analysiert, an deren Oberfläche ankorrodierte Textilreste festgestellt werden konnten. Die Untersuchung dieser Fundgegenstände brachte immer wieder sehr interessante Details bezüglich deren Beschaffenheit und Machart zu Tage. Basierend auf diesen interessanten Ergebnissen wurde von den Autoren eine Untersuchungsreihe zu archäologischen Textilfragmenten begonnen. Im Artikel werden einerseits erste Detailergebnisse der Analysen an einem urnenfelderzeitlichen Armreif aus Vösendorf und einer frühmittelalterlichen Gürtelschnalle aus Mautern-Melkerstraße vorgestellt, andererseits wird auf die dabei auftretenden Schwierigkeiten und Einflussfaktoren aufmerksam gemacht.

In Assos, a three-nave basilica was built in the early Byzantine period in the Hellenistic-Roman necropolis in which a saint grave was integrated. The tomb is characterized by a channel through liquids could be directed into the interior of the tomb. In middle Byzantine times, the building was converted into a church with isolated aisles. The naos was used for liturgical purposes, the surrounding rooms and the area around were used as a burial place. A special feature was the newly built chapel east of the apse, in and around which a large number of dead-born babies were buried.

Il volume introduce alle problematiche dell’Archeologia della Tarda Antichità e presenta monumenti, reperti e documenti essenziali per ripercorrere l’intero arco cronologico del Tardoantico dall’età severiana fino alla metà dell’VIII secolo d.C. quando ormai il clima politico, sociale e culturale volge verso nuovi orizzonti. Offre una panoramica sulle classi dei materiali, sulla storia delle scoperte archeologiche, sulle principali esposizioni e sui musei più importanti per l’approccio al Tardoantico. L’opera è riccamente corredata di bibliografia e di spunti utili per approfondimenti in ogni direzione. Una notevole mole di materiale iconografico supporta l’intera trattazione.
L’archeologo tardantichista è chiamato ad affrontare un ventaglio straordinariamente
ampio di problematiche che trovano esplicazione in un areale geografico immenso,
dall’Oceano Atlantico all’Indo. È un mondo in fermento di genti stanziali urbanizzate,
ma anche di interi popoli – si pensi agli Unni o agli Avari – in movimento sulle lunghe
distanze attraverso le steppe euroasiatiche. In questo periodo prendono forma e si
impongono nuove religioni monoteistiche come il multiforme Cristianesimo e il
Mazdeismo, ma si sviluppano anche nuove organizzazioni politiche. Si affermano
nuovi modi di pensare e cambia incisivamente la vita quotidiana della gente comune.
Trova nuove modalità di esplicazione l’arte della guerra (è in questo momento che le
strategie e le tattiche trovano nella mobilità, nella velocità e dunque nella cavalleria
gli strumenti più efficaci in battaglia) e pure le forme di trasmissione della cultura abbandonano progressivamente l’uso del rotolo per passare al veicolo del codice. Si tratta di processi che disegnano nuove società e nuove identità destinate a persistere per secoli fino alla nostra modernità. Il grande calderone tardoantico genera la prima forma riconoscibile di Europa (il mondo carolingio), ma anche la prima economia/mondo
unitaria di portata globale e a scala euroasiatica (l’Islam). In questo contesto l’archeologo tardantichista affronta una varietà straordinaria di espressioni della cultura materiale: deve avere dunque tutti gli attrezzi necessari per comprendere una chiesa, ma anche un mitreo; una necropoli, ma anche una catacomba; un corredo funerario vandalo, ma anche un mausoleo imperiale; una città di nuova fondazione, ma anche un villaggio rurale romanizzato; un palazzo imperiale, ma anche una capanna longobarda. L’archeologo
tardantichista deve inserire nel suo bagaglio formativo una buona conoscenza linguistica del latino e del greco, ma anche nozioni essenziali per la frequentazione del folto gruppo di idiomi che emergono nell’arco di cinque secoli dal sostrato culturale o nel quadro dei grandi processi di osmosi che coinvolgono popolazioni prima di matrice germanica e poi slava. Uno vastissimo e variegato patrimonio epigrafico (specialmente di carattere
funerario) è disseminato nelle terre del Tardoantico. Va aggiunto che la voce dell’archeologia ha un peso estremamente significativo nel riconoscimento delle definizioni erronee (per esempio, risulta evidente che una religione pagana non è mai esistita), dei luoghi comuni (valore epocale della battaglia del Ponte Milvio) o dei
falsi storici (“caduta dell’Impero romano”) che avvolgono molti momenti della storia tardoantica. Le innovazioni del Tardoantico attraversano tutta le produzioni. Marca tutto questo periodo lo sviluppo di nuove tecniche edilizie (la nostra idea del mattone come un manufatto rettangolare si sviluppa in epoca tardoantica) e l’invenzione di nuove forme architettoniche; si definiscono raffinate produzioni suntuarie (speciali tecniche
sono elaborate per la produzione di ori e argenti), i servizi di ceramica da mensa sono completamente rinnovati dalle imprese dell’Africa settentrionale; i cantieri navali mettono in acqua imbarcazioni costruite con nuove tecniche; i maestri “eborarii” danno nobiltà agli oggetti più semplici della vita quotidiana come i dittici; la produzione del vetro raggiunge vertici di straordinaria qualità riuscendo a servire ogni esigenza del mercato

Das interdisziplinären Projekt „Kleidung und Identität/Clothing and Identities – New Perspectives on Textiles in the Roman Empire (DressID)“ befasste sich mit der Erforschung der kulturellen Einheit und Vielfalt sowie ihre Widerspiegelung in den Textilien und Trachten innerhalb des Römischen Imperiums. Aus Österreich konnten im Rahmen des Projektes bis Februar 2010 128 Textilien aus dem Zeitraum zwischen dem Ende des 3. und des 5. Jhs. erfasst werden. Dabei handelt es sich vor allem um Textilien aus spätantiken Körpergräbern, die meist durch Metallkorrosion erhalten blieben.

The discussion about the construction period of the Late Roman bridge over the River Rhine in Cologne has lasted since the 1960s. The concepts of archaeologists and ancient historians seemed to be incommensurate with those of the dendrochronologists. With this essay in honour of Ursula Tegtmeier the authors, an archaeologist of the Roman provinces and a dendroarchaeologist, try to draw a historically coherent picture based upon a re-evaluation of the facts from both disciplines with special regard to military strategic events during the 4th century AD. This was done to solve the apparent discrepancies persisting to date.

Der Beitrag bietet eine Zusammenfassung des Forschungsstandes
zu dem Palastkomplex Cercadilla in Córdoba und seiner
späteren Umnutzung als christliche Kultstätte. Die unterschiedlichen Thesen,
die in den letzten Jahren in Bezug auf die Funktion und den Eigentü-
mer des Palastes geäußert worden sind – ob es sich um eine private Villa,
den Sitz des Statthalters der Baetica oder des vicarius hispaniarum oder aber
den Bischofspalast des Ossius oder anderer, späterer Bischöfe gehandelt hat
–, werden einer kritischen Betrachtung unterzogen. Mit Blick auf die verschiedenen
Argumente wie insbesondere die Größe der Anlage, den Zeitpunkt
des Baus, die Ausgestaltung mit Inschriften u. a., wird schließlich das
Fazit gezogen, dass diese Thesen abzulehnen sind. Cercadilla erschließt sich
einem nur dann, wenn man davon ausgeht, dass es als Kaiserpalast konzipiert
worden ist.

Zusammenfassung: Die Quellen zur spätantiken Religionsgeschichte der Iberischen Halbinsel werden durch eine christliche determinierte Voreingenommenheit dominiert. Die Tendenz der Quellen geht dahin, die Existenz des Heidentum im 5., 6. und 7. Jahrhundert zu bestreiten: Stattdessen wird behauptet, alle Einwohner seien Christen und religiöse Konflikte ergäben sich lediglich aufgrund von Aberglauben, magischen Praktiken oder christlichen Häresien. Dieser Aufsatz stellt die These auf, dass das Heidentum sehr viel länger mit dem Christentum koexistiert hat, als allgemein angenommen wird.

Abstract: Sources about the religious history of the Iberian Peninsula in Late Antiquity are dominated by a Christian bias. The general tendency of those sources is to negate the very existence of Paganism in the 5th, 6th, and 7th century: Instead, it is claimed that all inhabitants are Christians and religious conflicts are explained as arising from superstition, magical practices or Christian heresies. This article argues that Paganism co- existed with Christianity much longer than is commonly assumed.

SUMMARY: The question of Gregory's of Tours awareness of the persuasive potential of his learning he demonstrates in his works is discussed. The Touronian bishop's high evaluation of the erudition of other men is clearly shown and juxtaposed with his opinion concerning his linguistic competence. Gregory's ability to embellish his style, being a sign of the literary training is demonstrated. His degree of acquaintance with the classical literature is assessed and his familiarity with Latin poetry is underlined. The literal meaning of his statements concerning classical literature as detrimental to a Christian soul is contrasted with the subtle and indirect play those statements engage his readers in; their implicit meaning is shown to contradict their direct significance. Various examples of Gregory's efforts to display his erudition in the field of literature and his high degree of learning, including a fair number of erudite digressions are brought forth. Gregory's unambiguous statement concerning the intention with which he inserted them into his text is evoked. Finally, the Touronian Bishop's positive judgement about his audience's capacity of properly evaluating the erudite content of his writing is demonstrated and corroborated with the external evidence provided by contemporary sources.
