This interview takes its title from Daniele Manacorda’s recent work L’Italia agli Italiani (Bari, Edipuglia, 2014), a short but substantial book that asserts the author’s past and present commitment to redesign and bolster the relationship between civil society and cultural heritage. Manacorda’s passion and commitment have made him one of the great protagonists of Italian archaeology today. It is a joy and an honor to have him on Archaeostorie’s Advisory Board.

Recent advances in the technologies needed to digitize cultural heritage resources in three dimensions (3D) have led to the development of low-cost pieces of software and hardware for high quality projects aimed to reduce the distance between visitors and the cultural heritage displayed in museums and archaeological sites. Since this new techno-cultural enjoyment can be handled by both computers and mobile devices, its ever-increasing use can enhance the experience of both virtual, long-distance visitors and real visitors. The Etruscan Museum of Populonia Gasparri Collection has launched a project along these lines.

The Roman Settlement of Poggio del Molino, located in the territory controlled by the city of Populonia (Piombino, Livorno), has long drawn the interest of archaeologists. Excavations conducted by the University of Florence were interrupted for twenty years and eventually resumed in 2008. The new research project has provided evidence for the site's architectural evolution, revealing different construction stages and uses of spaces during a time of intense environmental and political change. Such data confirm the strategic importance of Poggio del Molino throughout a very long period of Roman history, from the Late Republic to the end of the Empire– mid 2 nd century BCE-beginning of 5 th century CE. The new research project is endorsed and supported by public institutions (Municipality of Piombino and University of Florence) as well as private national and international institutions (Cultural Association Past in Progress, Earthwatch Institute, University of Arizona, Hofstra University, Union College, Foundation RavennAntica) which are involved in field surveys, post-excavation studies and initiatives concerning the site's enhancement. This paper focuses on the oldest stage of the site's history, the Late Republican Fort, and on the second stage, the farm with fish sauce production.

The settlement of Poggio del Molino, located in the
northern sector of the territory controlled by the city of
Populonia, has been inhabited since prehistoric times.
At the beginning of the 1st century BCE, the hill is
occupied by a fortified building, whose purpose is to
control and defend the access to the channel leading from
the sea to the coastal lagoon of Rimigliano. The pirates,
who in around 74 BCE were able to attack the coasts of
Etruria, were then the main threat for the Roman state.
After the victorious war leaded by Pompei in 67 BCE, the
inner portion of the defensive structure was occupied by
workshops for the smelting of iron ore and for the making
of fish sauces. The cetaria, made of at least six vats
coated with cocciopesto plaster, was likely active
between the second half of the 1st century BCE and the
first imperial age.
Our research are actually focusing on what kind of fishbased
products were made at Poggio del Molino, what
was their distribution area and, finally, the amphora or
the amphora-pot used for the trading.
