This paper explores reasons for choosing Malaysia as a retirement location.In-depth interviews were carried out with 30 international retirees.Pearce's concept of the Travel Career Ladder (TCL) guided the data analysis and results discussion. The dominant motivation themes clustered in the seeking of self-fulfilment needs.Issues as to overlaps between motives and stages in the TCL are discussed.‘Malaysia My Second Home’ is an international retirement migration programme aimed at attracting the lucrative retiree market to choose Malaysia as their residence. This study implemented the concept of the Travel Career Ladder (TCL) (Pearce, 1991), with a purposeful sample of 30 participants who had retired to Malaysia. Questioning was directed towards their motives for selecting Malaysia and the analysis indicated that the majority of the motivation themes clustered in the seeking of self-fulfilment needs. Among motivation themes discovered are meaningful second life, positive instant thoughts, central travel location, positive retirement book description, food variety, tranquillity and simple life, political stability and security, and ease of communication. The study also revealed a challenge in applying TCL to its findings as some motivational themes simultaneously represent various TCL hierarchies. The theoretical, marketing and managerial implications of the study are discussed.

Place Development for International Retirement Migrants: A Decision-making Process Model2019 •
Purpose-This study aims to investigate the decision-making processes of international retirement migrants. The development of a place in response to the high demand for international retirement (IR) migration has become an important strategy for stakeholders within host destinations; of particular interest is IR migrant behaviour and intention to stay and retire in a foreign country. Design/methodology/approach-This research presents the results of a qualitative study using face-to-face interview techniques. Content analysis technique was used to analyze data from interviews with thirty-three international retirees in Thailand. Findings-Destination stakeholders must consider: creating awareness of the destination through WOM, trustworthy websites, and government channels, that migrants evaluate a destination based on pre-retirement visits that create attachment and emotional feelings for the place, and finally, the decision-making processes of short stay, semi-permanent and permanent migrants. Research limitations/implications-This qualitative study investigated migrants from Europe, USA and Australia. An understanding of IR migrants from Asia needs further research. Practical implications-The results can be used as guidelines for government, hospitality and tourism stakeholders. IR migrants want different destination attributes to mainstream tourists, especially a peaceful environment, mild weather (not too cold or hot), and to live among locals. Originality/value-This study examines migrant decision-making processes. The results provide a theoretical foundation for how IR migrants decide to retire overseas. This is comprised of three components: firstly, destination awareness, secondly, evaluation of the destination's resources, and finally, the decision and implementation of their plans.

Travel motivation of Indonesian seniors in choosing destination overseasPurpose This study focuses on the Indonesian seniors’ motivation in terms of travelling to a destination abroad. Using the push–pull motivation constructs and recognising the role of culture in influencing travel behaviour, the purpose of this study is to develop a better understanding of the underlying factors that explain why Indonesian seniors travel to and select an international destination. Design/methodology/approach A questionnaire-based survey was completed to collect data from 246 Indonesian seniors aged 55 years and over who had travelled overseas. Factor analysis was applied to reduce the total of 34 push and pull travel motivation items into new underlying factors. Informal interviews were also undertaken to support the analysis. Findings Personal development, relaxation and relationship enhancement appeared to be the three factors that internally pushed the seniors to travel abroad. Meanwhile, facilities and hygiene, destination familiarity, value for money and destina...

Tourists, Expatriates and International Retirees: An Empirical Evidence from Malaysia2014 •
2021 •
Despite the current importance of international retirement migration for both academics and practitioners, the extant literature on the topic is still scarce and mostly focused on short-period migration flows from wealthy and northern countries to cheaper and warm-weather destinations. This article aims at shedding light on the role of tourism in prospective migrants’ decision-making process, considering the framework provided by the push-pull model, which is often used to explain both migration and tourism. A qualitative study was conducted, comprising ten in-depth interviews with 45+ year-old Brazilian citizens who intend to move to Europe after retirement. Results show that tourism is important for prospective migrants to evaluate possible migration destinations, as some of the most relevant migration pull factors (e.g., safety) are easily assessed during tourism experiences. Participants in this study also carefully plan tourism activities prior to their decision to migrate in o...

Seniors’ travel motivation and the influential factors: An examination of Taiwanese seniors2006 •
The senior market draws attention in the tourism industry mainly because of its substantial size, increasing purchasing power and time flexibility after retirement. The primary objectives of this study were to delineate the travel motivations of Taiwanese seniors and to discover what variables are important in explaining the variances of the motivations. Using factor analyses, this study identified five push and three pull motivation factors. Among them, ‘knowledge-seeking’ and ‘cleanliness & safety’ appeared to be the most important push and pull motivations, respectively. Subsequent regression analyses indicated that health status and positive and negative affects significantly contribute to accounting for the travel motivations of Taiwanese seniors.
