This article highlights the results of exploration of thepathologicalartificiallydeformedskullsof representativesof the Catacombcultureoriginating fromburial mound inthe LowerVolga region. The analysisof the bone materialwas carried out with the use of X-raymethod of the frontaland lateral views. Thirteen radiographs ofskulls were examined. Theskull shapes, structure of the skull calvarialbones, state ofthe cranial sutures, signs ofintracranialhypertension, and symptoms of vascular pathologies were explored and evaluated. The study discoveredthat Catacomb culture bearers used a variety of methodsof skull deformation. The viability and compatibility with normalhuman activity of artificial skull deformation was observed. In the childhood and newborn periods, individuals have applied constrictive and restrictive devices, trusses andother appliancesfor a few years, their impact could result in the intracranial hypertension syndrome, as well as in problemswith cranial sutures obliteration.

The first article is devoted to the issues of continuity and innovations in Sauromatian and Early Sarmatian cultures and in the population of anthropological type. To resolve this issue, the archaeological database of 5 Sauromatian and 48 early Sarmatian burials was used. The anthropological database consists of 31 measured skulls of the early Sarmatian epoch (4th – 1st centuries BC). The anthropological material was studied by methods of one-dimensional and multidimensional statistics. The authors pay a special attention to the syncretic character of a number of burials of Sauromatian and Early Sarmatian culture in the period of its appearance on the Volga region territory in the late 4th – the early 1st c. BC. The instability of the burial rite is manifested in the combination of typically Sauromatic continuity of orientating in the latitudinal direction with northern and southern orientations, locating swords along the body instead of the Sauromatian tradition – on the belt obliquely, preserving the Sauromatian practice of accompanying a deceased with food in the form of the cattle side. These facts testify to the complex processes of interaction between the substrate and superstrate population, which were not limited only to the act of conquest. The results of the anthropological study suggest that the morphological appearance of the early Sarmatian population is similar to the rest of the synchronous population and is characterized by the Sarmatian type or the type of ancient Eastern Caucasians, combining meso-brachicrania with the moderate horizontal profiling of facial skeleton at the upper level with a sharply protruding nose. The total group of skulls was relatively homogeneous in terms of the intragroup structure. It is dominated by the type of wide-headed Caucasians with some intragroup variations in horizontal facial profiling. The morphological type of chronological women’s groups of the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC witnesses about the continuity of the population. The second article considers the issues of continuity and innovations in the Middle and Late Sarmatian cultures on the materials of Staritsa burial mound. The burial mound was dug out in the 60s of the 20th century by archaeological expedition under the leadership of V.P. Shilov. To solve this problem the main features of burial complexes and anthropological materials of the 1st – 3rd centuries A.D. were analyzed. The source base of the research includes materials of 30 burial complexes and cranial measurements of 22 skulls. To highlight transition periods the authors used the method of determining sign’s weight during its allocation to the antecedent or subsequent culture, as well as its chronological range. Digital information on anthropological series obtained in the process of measuring skulls was processed by the simple and multivariate statistics methods to identify the population continuity, similarities and differences. As a result of the study, the authors have identified and substantiated partial continuity of the two cultural traditions at the stage of their interaction, which apparently began near the middle of the 2nd century AD, when Late Sarmatian culture representatives appeared in the Lower Volga region. The transformation of such Middle Sarmatian culture signs as diagonal burials and the appearance of Late Sarmatian culture signs such as northern orientation of a buried, cubic incense burners, skulls with traces of artificial deformation may indicate the influence of a new culture on traditions of local people, who continued to dwell in this area and use the burial mound. As for the anthropological material, it shows that in this region the population of the middle and Late Sarmatian time partially retains the appearance of its predecessors, the population of the Early Sarmatian time. New components, such as long-headed Caucasoid and mixed Caucasoid-Mongoloid, identified on the basis of intragroup analysis, allow to reveal the type of migrants. The third paper presents the intergroup analysis made by the canonical method aimed at determining variability of anthropological types in chronological groups of the Sarmatian population that left Staritsa burial mound. For this purpose, digital information on 44 male and 30 female series including all three stages of Sarmatian culture from the burial mounds of the Lower Volga region was studied. The results of the analysis reveal smaller massiveness of the Sauromatian and Sarmatian population in comparison with the Bronze Age samples. The main anthropological type, whose carriers were the early Sarmatian groups of Staritsa burial mound, is the type of ancient Eastern Caucasians, and they are not separated from the synchronous population of other burial mounds. Characteristic features of this type include meso-brachycrania, weakened horizontal profiling at the upper facial level and a quite Caucasoid structure of the nose and nasal bones. There is the influx of the long-headed Caucasoid population in the middle Sarmatian epoch, which increases due time, and the late Sarmatian population acquires dolicho-mesocrane features. In the early epoch, the middle – late 2nd century A.D., some cultural and morphological features are blurred, as the material from burial 2 of barrow 8, burial 1 of barrow 54 and burial 1 of barrow 11 shows. In the Late Sarmatian time, the inflow of not only long-headed groups, but also individuals with the mixed anthropological Caucasoid-Mongoloid type was possible. Like the early Sarmatian group from Staritsa burial mound, the late Sarmatian group is more similar to the synchronous population from other Lower Volga burials.

The anthropologists utilized different methods for each skeleton within a cemetery sample. The aspiration to change appearance is peculiar to mankind in such displays, as, for example, the artificial deformation of a head. The custom of deliberate ring deformation of a head was known in ancient and early medieval populations of the Shirak plain (Beniamin, Shirakavan, Karmrakar,Vardbagh, Byurakn). Such deformations were also discovered during excavations of Samtavro and Mingechaur and other regions. The phenomenon of artificial skull modifications identified in ancient burial sites in Armenia clearly points to the emergence of social complexity and class differentiation, and earlier it was documented and widespread among the Sarmatians and Scythians. There was a clear anthropological evidence for the decapitation of individual from Shirakavan. Holding the victim by hair, the head of the woman was cut with a sword. Decapitation was associated with the cult of the skull, war, trophy, shameaggression war. In case of another woman several fine incision marks were observed, some parallel to each other. Scalping was incomplete. It is likely then that the scalp from the top of the head was removed by cutting across the front and along the sides. An ancient skull from Shirakavan also showed the evidence of trepanation. Trepanation, achieved using a drilling technique, created a hole which was noted on the right parietal bone of the funnel-shaped type. The symbolic trepanation was known in the ancient populations of Armenia (Beniamin, Vardbagh, Shirakavan, Karmrakar, the Black Fortress). From anthropological literature it is known, that scalping and trepanations were used in various rituals. The data of monuments of Shirak plain are rare and have great value for anthropological and ethnographic study of ancient and early medieval Armenian population.
