Acéphale

Dieses Buch untersucht Konzeptionen der Mimesis und des Mimetischen in der Kontaktzone zwischen Ethnologie und (post-)surrealistischer Avantgarde im Paris der 1930er Jahre: bei Georges Bataille, Roger Caillois, Michel Leiris und im außerakademischen Forschungskollektiv Collège de Sociologie. In den Texten und Projekten der drei Autoren kreuzen sich ästhetische und ethnologische Diskurse – mit dem Ergebnis einer umfassenden ›Entgrenzung‹ der Mimesis und des Mimetischen. Die künstlerischen, wissenschaftlichen und politischen Praktiken, die im Zentrum von Batailles, Caillois’ und Leiris’ Überlegungen standen, sind nicht auf die optische imitatio oder die bloß poietische Neuschaffung der Welt beschränkt. Sie sollten vielmehr umfassende Transformationsprozesse initiieren, die nicht zuletzt das mimetisch agierende Subjekt selbst erfassen.


Eine Studie über die Einschreibung des sogenannten ›Primitiven‹ in die künstlerischen und literarischen Diskurse zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts, über die Faszination der Avantgarde für ›primitive Denkweisen‹ und den Wunsch, sich diese Denkweisen auf mimetische Art und Weise anzueignen – und über die umfassenden ästhetiktheoretischen Revisionen, die daraus folgten.

"Have I ever been so certain that life bears an answer to the most unfathomable movements of the heart?" Georges Bataille asked himself in his autobiographical book Guilty (1944). What was the source of Bataille's certainty? Baas's “Illumination Illuminated: An Annotated Translation of Jean Bruno’s ‘Illumination Techniques of Georges Bataille” reveals the answer to this question  (from the Schism Press anthology, Acéphale).

Lovecraft’s significance in cultural history becomes clearer if we see him as a counterpart of his contemporary, the increasingly influential French theorist and pornographic writer Georges Bataille (1897-1962), in attempting to carry to their ultimate conclusions in thought, life and literature certain Nietzschean insights about the place of man in the universe as described by modern science. To be sure, the Puritan atheist aesthete of horror and the debauched ex-Catholic mystic of evil knew nothing of each other and were unquestionably poles apart in temper, lifestyle, and sensibility. And yet, from these contrasting standpoints, they were really talking about the same thing, namely: the fascinating attraction and repulsion of an obscene black hole at the core of every entity, ultimately as divine parody ruling the swirling maelstrom of celestial bodies at the bottom of the formless abyss of the universe in its general economy of excess, defying the rational mind’s attempts to enfold it within its anthropocentric grasp, yet luring the lower passions to act out this “base materialism” by joining in the wild dance of the elements through orgiastic festivals and sacrificial rituals of “primitive” peoples in thrall to cruel pre-human powers, whose archaic and future hegemony they celebrate and adumbrate. This apocalyptic horizon of mindless panic and choking horror upon the coming demise of Western civilization in a new dark age of savage revelry was fantasized as fearful ancient cults in Lovecraft’s literary Mythos, but Bataille actively welcomed it by fomenting similar cults and myths of his own, complete with human sacrifice, like his Acéphale secret society, following upon his paleographic research on ancient worship of hybrid or headless monsters. Life emulates fiction, since the librarian Bataille drew material and inspiration from the “inferno” of the Bibliothèque Nationale, which Lovecraft mentioned as holding a copy of the Necronomicon…

Si Colette Peignot, qui s’est choisi le nom de « Laure », n’est pas complètement oubliée aujourd’hui, c’est surtout en sa qualité de compagne de Georges Bataille, et d’une rumeur de vie dissolue et scandaleuse qui entoure sa biographie. Ses écrits complets ne sont pas réédités, et les rares éditions récentes se focalisent sur son essai autobiographique, qui est peut-être ce que son « œuvre » présente de moins intéressant. Nous souhaiterions montrer que l’on trouve dans les Écrits de Laure une tentative de vivre une éthique du sacré d’une intransigeance absolue, qui va bien au-delà des tentatives que Bataille, Leiris et les membres d’Acéphale ou du Collège de sociologie ont pu proposer en ce sens. Ce qui engage une pratique de l’écriture qui est peut-être à tort assimilée à de la littérature, et qui mérite davantage d’être rapproché des exercices spirituels philosophiques ou d’une pratique transformative de soi via l’écriture. Le peu de textes dont nous disposons n’est pas un hasard. Il résulte de la volonté de n’écrire que dans la stricte mesure où l’écriture permet d’atteindre à une forme de perfection intense de l’existence, effort qui doit être resitué dans sa filiation nietzschéenne dont il est peut être une des radicalisations les plus intéressantes. Par l’exposition des traits caractéristiques de cette éthique à la fois excessive et rigoriste, en la rapatriant dans la sphère du philosophique, et en questionnant l’oubli complet dont elle fait aujourd’hui l’objet par rapport à ses homologues masculins, nous souhaitons participer à sa réhabilitation, et à une focalisation sur une partie trop négligée de son œuvre.

ABSTRACT The headless human figure drawing, which breaks its ties with the society with the sacrifice of own self, which is both the victim and executioner by André Masson, is an essential source of the text's transformation. As a presenter of everything which accepted as a waste socially and not divinely, Acéphale is manifesting itself at the point of where Bataille sacrifice society with his Dionysiac arguments. The Acéphale interpretation which will present at the beginning of the text will show itself in sacrificial ritual with a between victim and executioner, executioner and witnesses and, witnesses and victim. There will be an effort to explain the beast side of human being, which he conceals in himself and brings under the veil of society and, encounters of him with his wild beastly side at the threshold between the fields in society and out-of-society.

Au départ de cette édition, une iconographie (constituée par mes soins à partir de cartes postales, photographies, images téléchargées, images scannées, collages, Une du Parisien) et des écrits éparses (sorte de base théorique latente), supports d’une conférence improvisée. Il s’agissait du troisième volet d’un ensemble de conférences autour de monuments coloniaux et de vandalismes : Bronze et ciment dans la construction des pistes (volet 1 : Reims/Bamako ; volet 2 : Alger/Rio — le transport du ciment en vrac).

La historia de la comunidad Acéphale sigue aún hoy rodeada de misterios. Organizada en torno a una serie de prácticas secretamente custodiadas, tres de sus miembros, Georges Bataille, Pierre Klossowski y Georges Ambrosino, publican en 1936 el primer número de una revista que anuncia cuatro apariciones por año. Roger Caillois, Jean Wahl, Jean Rollin y Jules Monnerot agregan su participación en los únicos cuatro restantes números que Acéphale publica entre los años 1937 y 1939, siempre con las ilustraciones a cargo de André Masson. El presente volumen recoge los cinco números en los que Acéphale consagra el vínculo comunitario al ejercicio de una escritura.

In this article, the author introduces several approaches to the concept of sacrifice. It begins with the classic sociological approach of Émile Durkheim who in sacrifice remarks forming, strengthening and maintaining of a community. In his anthropological conception, Georges Bataille demonstrates that the production and accumulation of wealth are wrong moral principles and suggests a new moral practice of giving oneself without asking anything in return, which represents the only way to realize a society of equals. Such a society, in which there would be no leader or a singular sovereignty, he calls Acéphale. For Jean-Luc Nancy, sacrifice is impossible. Starting from a standpoint that the Being is nothing and that there is nothing except this worldly plurality, Nancy considers sacrifice impossible since there is no higher principle for which the sacrifice would be performed. Beside the standpoints of the above-mentioned theoreticians, this article also offers a theory of discipline and sacrifice for achieving a socially expected perfect appearance. In all the mentioned theories, non-classic dimension of sacrifice is demonstrated. In them sacrifice is performed as activity for achieving social unity, greater equality, socially expected appearance and it is also presented as something impossible.

Se publican por primera vez en español  los cuatro números de la legendaria revista "Acéphale" —"Acéfalo"—  fundada en 1936 por Georges Bataille, Pierre Klossowski y otros pensadores, donde luego participan André Masson,  Michel Foucault e ,indirectamente, Maurice Blanchot, quienes bajo el signo de Nietzsche, se oponían a limitar al hombre a una existencia estrictamente racional. El presente texto,  testimonia, además,  la encendida "Discusión sobre el pecado", que mantuvieron —entre otros— Bataille, Sartre y Jean Hyppolite en 1944. Aquí, un recorrido por esos materiales que todavía encienden furiosas polémicas.
