Arethusa

Archilochus issues an iambic challenge to Kerykides through the frame of authoritative speech in Epode 185W; the much-debated phrase akhnymenē skytalē is essential to that attack. I propose a new reading of akhnymenē that allows for its double-valence: it is at once "sorrowful" (as traditionally understood) and "speaking." This double meaning accords precisely with the dual strands of Archilochus' biting poetic mode: his words bring sorrow to their target in their verbal articulation. Such a reading also recommends my view of Archilochus' message stick as an analogue to Hesiod's iconic scepter, that is, as emblematic of Archilochus' authoritative iambic speech.

In questo articolo esamino in modo innovativo l'uso delle fonti classiche, in particolare Lucano e Ovidio, in Inferno XXIV-XXV. Come risultato, sono riuscita a sciogliere una crux interpretativa riguardante il perché Dante nomini il personaggio di Aretusa.

In questo saggio sintetizzo le posizioni che avevo già espresso in un convegno presso la Società Dantesca Italiana, nei cui atti erano già state pubblicate. Il punto è sempre che il vanto di Inferno XXV debba essere riferito principalmente alle metamorfosi dello stesso canto e non anche all'incenerimento di Vanni Fucci del canto precedente. Ciò permette anche di capire meglio perché Dante nomini determinati personaggi nel vanto, soprattutto l'altrimenti inspiegabile presenza di Aretusa.

In the Odyssey, a poem that charts the unfamiliar territory
of regions that were, in antiquity as today, “as hard to trace as the cobbler
of Aeolus’s bag of winds” (Strabo 1.2.15), the possibility of losing one’s
way is a recurrent motif. In this paper, I examine one isolated example of a
“lost” or unmappable landscape in the poem, in an episode that never actually takes place in the Odyssey, but is foretold twice: fi rst by Teiresias in the Underworld (11.121–31) and later by Odysseus to Penelope back on Ithaca (23.267–77). The story is well known, for it describes Odysseus’s foray into a particularly unusual topography.

Informe del hallazgo por la autora, entre abril y mayo de 1973, de este bello aunque muy destrozado pavimento musivo de comienzos del siglo III, excepcional en el Imperio por su tamaño y temáticas. Se incluyen también datos de la excavación parcial de esta rica 'domus', situada entre la 'vetus' y la 'nova' urbs de Itálica pero sin niveles trajano-adrianeos, lo que sugiere que en el siglo II era una zona ajardinada y de ocio que articulaba ambas áreas. Tras la caída de los emperadores ulpio-aelios, cuando comienza el abandono de la 'nova urbs' y el repliegue hacia la 'vetus urbs', la zona fue ocupada por nuevas casas. Se describen también los demás mosaicos, geométricos, con los que en el siglo IV se taparon los más antiguos, severianos. Éste fue el primer, o uno de los primeros estudios sobre un mosaico hispanorromano que no se realizó sólo con el habitual enfoque formal, estético y de paralelos, sino también desde el punto de vista literario y filosófico: su resultado fue que posiblemente el 'dominus' de la casa tenía inclinaciones órfico-pitagóricas. Rastreo del origen de los distintos cartones utilizados (una combinación de sirios y norteafricanos), paralelos, datación, etc. La excavación no pudo ser completada, el espectacular mosaico de Venus sufrió varios traslados, y hoy es poco lo que queda de él.

Η περιοχή της Βόλβης εντάσσεται στο λεκανοπέδιο των δύο μεγάλων λιμνών της επικράτειας της Θεσσαλονίκης, δηλαδή της ομώνυμης λίμνης και της λίμνης του Αγίου Βασιλείου ή του Λαγκάδα, όπως είναι γνωστότερη η δεύτερη. Ειδικότερα, κατά τους βυζαντινούς χρόνους προσέφερε άφθονα αγαθά στους κατοίκους της μητρόπολης της Μακεδονίας και συμβασιλεύουσας της βυζαντινής αυτοκρατορίας, καθώς και στους γύρω μικρότερους οικισμούς. Αποτελούσε επίσης τον προμαχώνα της Θεσσαλονίκης, προστατεύοντας τη στρατηγική για την επιβίωση της αυτοκρατορίας αυτή πόλη από ανατολάς, με μία σειρά φρουρίων ή οχυρωμένων οικισμών. Η αμυντική αξία της θέσης γίνεται φανερή, αν κανείς εξετάσει τη φυσική γεωμορφολογία του εδάφους της, με τα Μακεδονικά Τέμπη να ξεχωρίζουν τόσο για τη πλούσια και άγρια βλάστηση τους, όσο και για τη δυνατότητα που προσέφεραν για την εποπτεία της στενής λωρίδας του Στρυμονικού κόλπου, η οποία αποτελούσε και το πέρασμα από τη Θράκη στη Μακεδονία, ή το αντίστροφο, μέσω της Εγνατίας οδού, συνδέοντας έτσι από τη ξηρά τις δύο μεγαλουπόλεις της βυζαντινής αυτοκρατορίας, τη Θεσσαλονίκη και την Κωνσταντινούπολη.

In this paper we attempt to analyze, interpret and compare two Euboean myths. Η Βόλβη εμφανίζεται στην ελληνική γραμματεία και μυθολογία ως νύμφη και κόρη του Τιτάνος Ωκεανού και της Τιτανίδος Τηθύος. Σύμφωνα με την παράδοση, η νύμφη Βόλβη ζούσε στη λίμνη στην οποία έδωσε και το όνομα της, ενώ ο Αθήναιος αναφέρει ότι μαζί με τον Ηρακλή, η νύμφη απέκτησε και έναν γιό, τον Όλυνθο, μυθικό βασιλέα της Θράκης και ιδρυτή της ομώνυμης πόλης της Χαλκιδικής. Η περιοχή της Βόλβης, σύμφωνα με τον Θουκυδίδη, άνηκε κατά την αρχαιότητα στη χώρα της Μυγδονίας, ενώ ο λαός που κατοικούσε γύρω από τις όχθες της ονομαζόταν Μύγδονες, όπως μας πληροφορεί ο Στράβων στα Γεωγραφικά του.

Η χώρα της Μυγδονίας γειτνίαζε προς δυτικά με τη Βοττιαία, προς βορρά με την Κρηστωνία και προς βορειοανατολικά με τη Βισαλτία. Στα δυτικά της οριοθετούταν από τον κάτω ρου του ποταμού Αξιού, ενώ τα ανατολικά της σύνορα φαίνεται αρχικά να ήταν έως τα στενά της Ρεντίνας, δηλαδή τα λεγόμενα Μακεδονικά Τέμπη, και αργότερα έως και τον ποταμό Στρυμών. Ο Ηρόδοτός πάντως συμπεριλαμβάνει την παράλια πεδιάδα του Στρυμονικού κόλπου μεταξύ των στενών της Ρεντίνας κα του Στρυμόνος, την οποία και αποκαλεί Σιλέως πεδίον, στην περιοχή της Βισαλτίας την περίοδο των Περσικών πολέμων. Μεταγενέστεροι συγγραφείς, όπως ο Θουκυδίδης και ο Στράβων, αναφέρουν ότι η Μυγδονία επεκτείνεται πλέον ως τον Στρυμόνα.

La storia di Aretusa da lei narrata in met. 5 rappresenta ‘La versione di Aretusa’: una versione del mito in apparenza inedita, o piuttosto incompleta, accelerata nel finale e avallata per interesse da due narratrici interne e dal narratore esterno. Solo qui, in apparenza, Alfeo non raggiunge Aretusa in Sicilia e non mescola le sue acque con lei. L'illusione del lettore è un principio della poetica ovidiana: qui, nonostante l'impressione creata in chi legge, i dati sono compatibili con la versione tradizionale, vari segni nel testo alludono alla conclusione nota del mito, e tutto suggerisce la tendenziosità del racconto della ninfa. I livelli narrativi sovrapposti sono tutti solidali nel celebrare l'eroica resistenza di una ninfa alla violenza erotica, che è lo scopo di ogni racconto: di Aretusa a Cerere, di Calliope alle ninfe giudici, della Musa a Minerva, del narratore ai lettori delle Metamorfosi. La ninfa-Musa, fonte di ispirazione nella poesia bucolica, è una narratrice consapevole, degna di prendere la parola nelle parole delle Muse; ed è una narratrice interessata, che manipola il racconto delle proprie origini, dell'inseguimento di Alfeo, della traversata sottomarina, e rivendica solo a sé tutta la gloria delle “acque di Elide” a Ortigia. Ovidio costruisce la storia di Aretusa dialogando con Virgilio: la decima Egloga, il quarto libro delle Georgiche, l'esordio di Eneide 2 e il finale di Eneide 3. Il racconto di Enea è richiamato con segnali esibiti; Aretusa lo corregge sul punto che la riguarda e – come Enea secondo Ovidio – non può evitare di apparire una narratrice inaffidabile.
