Arkadia

Identity is a necessary way of auto-definition in the process of building any human group. Some societies (not many) with strong political forces need to develop their identity process and to build the most powerful ethnic feelings. The building of ethnicity is not a simply task, as can be seen in the case of Mount Lykaion, in Arcadia. This is a clear example of the ideological force which characterizes the identity definitions and the ethnic building process.

Probabilmente l'Accademia dava per scontato il consenso intorno al grande progetto dell'Illuminismo. Ma Rousseau divenne celebre perché, ribaltando i termini della questione, suggeriva che, a grandi linee, al massimo grado di raffinatezza culturale consegue un livello minimo di virtuosità. Una "barbarie della riflessione" era il pronostico formulato quasi allo stesso tempo anche da Giambattista Vico a proposito di una cultura della ragione giunta al culmine del suo sviluppo 2. Ma comunque incontestato rimaneva l'illuministico movente centrale: come giungere a una felicità umanamente possibile. Essenzialmente si trattava quindi di individuare il percorso giusto. In realtà, già nel suo primo Discorso, Rousseau lascia intendere in quale parte della natura umana egli ritenga di trovarla (coeur). Ma in questa fase è ancora impegnato a dimostrare soprattutto come la moderna storia della civiltà abbia condotto l'uomo a una condizione di improprietà esistenziale. Il comportamento calcolatore dello spirito (esprit) si è imposto in maniera 'depravante' sul sentire naturale del corpo (corps). Un processo, questo, inaugurato già dalle grandi civiltà del mondo antico.

This paper is in two parts. The first analyzes approximately 45 documents obtained from the Archivo General de Puerto Rico by Prof. Robert C. McGreevey, a professor of history at the College of New Jersey. They detail the efforts made by families living in Puerto Rico who were trying to ascertain the whereabouts of their loved ones who were part of the first wave of Puerto Rican workers who let the island seeking better fortunes in the sugar cane fields of Hawaii. The second part focuses on the demographics, economics, and genealogy of Puerto Ricans up to 1972.

Our aim in this MA dissertation has been to examine the phenomenon of the repeated crowning in honorary decrees and honorary inscriptions. A praise and a crown are the most usual honours which the Greek cities gave to their benefactors from the Classical times onwards. A record of the text of the praise and the crowning is an inseperable part of all honorary decrees. A crowning included quite often a formal award of a golden crown to the honorand , or sometimes, of a crown made of another material, like, e.g., a crown of young branch. Most of the crownings are the case of an hapax crowning, that is the award of a crown only once for the specific benefaction to which the honours apply. Contrary to the hapax crowning, the annually repeated crowning of the same person for the same benefaction, or the same group of benefactions, appears in certain honorary decrees of the Classical, Hellenistic, and Imperial times. A repeated/perpetual crowning often included the repetition of the ceremony of the crown award. The repeated/perpetual crowning itself, and, more specifically, the type and the reasons of the repeated crowning reveal that it was considered as an exceptional honour, awarded in special conditions. The phenomenon of the repeated crowning has already been a subject of research and a kind of provisional survey has already been conducted. But it has not been examined as a whole, in terms of time and place, based on a full corpus of the relevant inscriptions. In the present dissertation, this particular phenomenon is studied more comprehensively and systematically, so that all the features of the repeated crowning are displayed. The dissertation’s structure was determined by the form, the phrasing and the content of the repeated crowning. Thus, it consists of three parts: A. Introduction, B. Main Subject (διηνεκὴς στέφανος [crown awarded repeatedly during one's lifetime]), C. Summary and Conclusions. The Main Subject is devided in the following parts: I) Repeated crowning, in which the phenomenon itself is examined. II) Repeated crowning and repeated award and III) Hapax crowning. Those passages of the inscriptions are cited in each chapter, that are informative of the repeated crowning. An analysis with explanatory notes of the content of the inscriptions follows the original Greek text, so as to exhibit how the repeated crowning fits into its context each time.

Περίληψη: Σκοπός της Διπλωματικής ήταν η εξέταση του φαινομένου της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης σε τιμητικά ψηφίσματα και τιμητικές επιγραφές. Ο έπαινος και ο στέφανος είναι οι συνηθέστερες τιμές τις οποίες απένεμαν οι ελληνικές πόλεις σε ευεργέτες τους ήδη από την Κλασική εποχή και εξής. Η διατύπωση του επαίνου και της στεφάνωσης είναι αναπόσπαστο μέρος του τυπικού όλων των τιμητικών ψηφισμάτων. Η στεφάνωση συνίστατο στην απονομή στο τιμώμενο πρόσωπο πολύ συχνά ενός χρυσού στεφάνου καθορισμένης αξίας, ή ενίοτε ενός στεφάνου από άλλη ύλη, όπως π. χ. ενός στεφάνου «θαλλοῦ». Στην συντριπτική πλειοψηφία των περιπτώσεων απονομής στεφάνου πρόκειται για άπαξ στεφάνωση, δηλαδή απονομή ενός στεφάνου μία μόνον φορά για την συγκεκριμένη ευεργεσία στην οποία αναφέρονται οι τιμές. Σε αντιδιαστολή με την στεφάνωση άπαξ εμφανίζεται σε ορισμένα τιμητικά ψηφίσματα της Κλασικής, της Ελληνιστικής και της Αυτοκρατορικής εποχής η κατ’έτος επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση του ιδίου προσώπου για την ίδια ευεργεσία ή για το ίδιο σύνολο ευεργεσιών. Συχνά η επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση συνίστατο στην επαναλαμβανόμενη αναγόρευση του απονεμηθέντος στεφάνου. Η επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση καθαυτή και ειδικότερα το είδος και οι λόγοι της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης δείχνουν ότι επρόκειτο για εξαιρετική τιμή η οποία απονεμόταν υπό ειδικές συνθήκες. Το φαινόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης έχει τεθεί ήδη στην έρευνα και έχει γίνει κάποιου είδους προκαταρκτική εξέταση. Αλλά το φαινόμενο αυτό δεν έχει εξετασθεί ακόμα συνολικά στον χρόνο και στον χώρο με βάση όλες τις σχετικές επιγραφές. Στην παρούσα εργασία εξετάζεται το φαινόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης περισσότερο αναλυτικά και συστηματικά, έτσι ώστε αναδεικνύονται όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά γνωρίσματα της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης. Η διάρθρωση της εργασίας υπαγορεύθηκε από το είδος, την διατύπωση και το περιεχόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης. Έτσι η εργασία διαρθρώνεται σε τρία μέρη: (Α) την Εισαγωγή, (Β) το κυρίως θέμα (Διηνεκής στέφανος: είδος, διατύπωση, περιεχόμενο) και (Γ) την Ανακεφαλαίωση και τα συμπεράσματα. Το κύριο μέρος της εργασίας (Β) διαρθρώνεται στις εξής επιμέρους θεματικές ενότητες: I) Επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση, όπου εξετάζεται καθαυτό το φαινόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης, II) Επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση και επαναλαμβανόμενη αναγόρευση, όπου εξετάζεται το φαινόμενο της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης και συνοδεύεται από την επαναλαμβανόμενη αναγόρευση του απονεμηθέντος στεφάνου και III) Άπαξ στεφάνωση και επαναλαμβανόμενη αναγόρευση, όπου εξετάζεται το φαινόμενο της άπαξ στεφάνωσης και της επαναλαμβανόμενης αναγόρευσης του στεφάνου. Σε κάθε κεφάλαιο δίνονται τα χωρία εκείνα των επιγραφών, τα οποία παρέχουν πληροφορίες για την επαναλαμβανόμενη στεφάνωση. Μετά τα αρχαία ελληνικά χωρία ακολουθεί σχολιασμένη η απόδοση του περιεχομένου των επιγραφών, για να δειχθεί η ένταξη της επαναλαμβανόμενης στεφάνωσης στα εκάστοτε συμφραζόμενά της.

The similarities between the iconography of Christian devil and god Pan is not a mere coincidence or stylistic loan, but a consequence of the process of demonization of goat-god. This article analyzes, from the point of view of the classical world, this process of demonization, which approached the god Pan to the field of Christian Devil, with whom is sometimes confused. The relationship is based on Pan´s iconic characteristics: his therianthopy, his taste for the boundaries, his overflowing sexuality, his theoleptic appearances or his conversion into a symbol of Wholeness.

For nearly a century the Gennadius Library has served as custodian of a unique collection of knowledge, sustaining and preserving the celebrated Hellenic tradition for the generations to follow. Its considerable collection includes a number of 18th and 19th century travel accounts, or itineraries, for which many European scholars, following in the footsteps of Pausanias, embarked upon a grand tour of Greece; and arguably, the greatest contributions in this ‘rediscovery of Greece’, came from Anglo-Irish scholars. Located in ancient Arkadia, Stymphalos was a very common stop on the itinerary of these scholars, and here it provides a typical example of their treatment of an ancient settlement and its glorious past in the context of its impoverished present. While archaeology and ancient texts provide some information pertaining to this ancient city, it is the works preserved in the Gennadius which provide that invaluable link between the ancient past and pre-modern present. The ‘rediscovery’ of ancient sites, such as Stymphalos, by these scholars and the dissemination of their ancient past, played a significant role in the formation of their identity within the modern Greek state.

Current excavation at the Sanctuary of Zeus on Mount Lykaion is further clarifying our understanding of religion in ancient Arcadia. Work is focused on both the Ash Altar and the Lower Sanctuary, which afforded the venue for the Lykaian Games. An important component of the project has been the reassessment of all inscriptions discovered on the mountain. The present paper reports on new findings from two inscribed texts. IG 5 2 548 is a bronze plaque discovered outside the northeast corner of the large (38 x 20 m) building characterized by Kourouniotis as the Xenon (1909). The document—until now only partially published—mentions a damiorgos of the Ar-cadian League and proceeds to list men labeled with Arcadian ethnic adjectives. One obscure sequence, OYPIO, can only be restored as Kynourios, the ethnic of an Arcadian tribal group that ceased to exist during the 360s B.C.E. The plaque, which was probably affixed to the exterior of the building, thus provides a terminus ante quem for the beginning of construction in the Lower Sanctuary. Other data from the inscription indicate that it belongs to the period of Arcadian domination over Olympia (365/4), which may suggest that control over the riches of Olympia helped to facilitate the monumentalization of Lykaion. IG 5 2 550 was discovered inside Kourouniotis' Xenon and includes two victory lists from the Lykaian Games, the first of which can be dated to 308 B.C.E. Preceding this list is a catalogue of political officers. Prosopographical analysis shows that this catalogue lists men from different Arcadian communities and thus must emanate from a federal organization. This conclusion is significant both for Ar-cadian political history and the life of the sanctuary, for it indicates that the latter was administered by a federal organization for more than half a century. Current scholarship does not acknowledge the existence of an Arcadian federal state after 362, and this text thus takes on added historical significance. Study of the stone has even revealed two previously unknown offices of the Arcadian League, the Hipparchos and Toxarchos. Accordingly, these documents enhance our knowledge of the dating, architectural program, and historical significance of the Sanctuary of Zeus Lykaios in Late Classical and Early Hellenistic times. Taken together, the political and administrative nature of the records support the conclusion of the excavators that the Xenon was in fact an administrative building and headquarters of the federal officers known as the damiorgoi, who I suggest organized the festival.

Exactly 70 years have passed since the walls of ancient Gortys were first studied in detail by R. Martin under the auspices of the Ecole Française d’Athènes. As one of the first investigations of its kind, the methodology employed by Martin in his study is often cited as the exemplar for later studies of individual circuits. Indeed, in the introduction to his Greek Fortifications (1970), F. Winter expresses his partiality for Martin’s clear and inclusive broad historical approach, and notes that while one may question some of Martin’s conclusions in matters of detail, his method is sound. It is precisely these ‘matters of detail’ with which this paper is concerned. Drawing on Martin’s comprehensive study and established chronology, and building on Winter’s research on the indented trace, this paper argues for a revised reconstruction of both the overall layout of the trace and the nature of the superstructure of the fortifications at Gortys. Based on new historical considerations provided by local
comparanda from a detailed field study of the surviving fortifications of every Arkadian polis, it is also argued that the location of the site, Gortys’ attested Arkadian League membership, and an early fourth century BCE date for the walls, invite the possibility that the circuit at Gortys belonged to the same defensive building program as  Megalopolis and Mantineia, instigated after the Spartan defeat at Leuktra.

Η διαστρέβλωση και Παρετυμολογία είναι απότοκο της μη εφαρμογής της βασικής αρχής «ανάγω στην πρότερα μορφή». Θα  πρέπει  να αναχθούμε στις πρώτες πηγές όπως ο Σωκράτης μας καταδεικνύει στον Κρατύλο του Πλάτωνα. Η πλάνη που επέρχεται είναι εμφανής στις ξενόφερτες ετυμολογίες των τοπωνυμίων που τα ανάγουν σε Φοινικικές,  Σλαβικές, Τούρκικες ρίζες κ.α. Οι ξένο-υποτέλειες σε ότι η Ελλήνια φωνή φέρει μέσω του Ερμή-Λόγου αποτελεί «υβριν» παραβίαση της ροής της νοητικής τάξης. (Υβρις-άτη-νέμεσις-τίσις) Και η τήσις, η θεία τιμωρία ως ετεροκατεύνση της γνώσης και Λήθη, είναι η πιο βαριά. Στο υψηλότερο επίπεδο νόησης που  μεταφέρει η μυθολογία, το «κλέβω» σημαίνει οικειοποιούμαι, ενστερνίζομαι, δηλαδή ο Νέος Ερμής ως «κλέπτης» προσπαθεί να μάθει τις ενέργειες και τις δράσεις των Ολύμπιων Θεών, των δυνάμεων,  ώστε να τίς εκφέρει ο ίδιος. Αντίστοιχα το «φονεύω» σημαίνει «λαμβάνω την θέσιν του»

Paus. VIII 9, 7-8: “También fue considerado entre ellos Antínoo como un dios y su templo es el más reciente de los templos de Mantinea. Fue extraordinariamente amado por el emperador Adriano. Yo no lo llegué a ver en vida, pero lo he visto en estatuas y pinturas (…). En Mantinea ha recibido veneración por el motivo siguiente: Antínoo era originario de Bitinio, la ciudad que está más arriba del río Sangario, y los de Bitinio son arcadios y mantineos en origen. Por esto el emperador estableció para él honores divinos también en Mantinea y se celebra anualmente una ceremonia mistérica (teleté) y cada cuatro años unos juegos en su honor. Los mantineos tienen un local (oikos) en el gimnasio con imágenes de Antínoo, digno de admiración por los mármoles con los que está adornado y por sus pinturas. La mayoría son de Antínoo, representado como Dioniso. Precisamente de la pintura del Cerámico que representa la batalla de los atenienses en Mantinea hay aquí una copia”.

ΣΥΝΟΨΗ
Η παρούσα εργασία αποσκοπεί στην έρευνα της διαχρονικής οικιστικής ανάπτυξης του αρκαδικού Ορχομενού από τους νεολιθικούς χρόνους μέχρι και το τέλος της ρωμαϊκής εποχής. Για το σκοπό αυτό αξιοποιήθηκε μιας ευρείας έκτασης μελέτη όλων των μέχρι σήμερα γνωστών πηγών, περιλαμβανομένων αρχαίων συγγραφέων, χαρτογράφων και ταξιδιωτών της νεοτέρας εποχής, επιγραφών, καθώς επίσης και αρχαιολογικών δεδομένων, όπως είναι η αρχιτεκτονική, η τοπογραφία, η μικροτεχνία, η νομισματική.
Η έρευνα απέδειξε ότι οι περιοχές πέριξ του Ορχομενού κατοικούνταν ήδη περιστασιακά από την Νεολιθική Εποχή. Με τη δημιουργία του φράγματος στη θέση Στενό κατά την Ύστερη Εποχή του Χαλκού, και παρά τις αντίξοες καιρικές συνθήκες του χειμώνα, η περιοχή νοτίως του Ορχομενού μπόρεσε να γίνει καλλιεργήσιμη και κατάλληλη για μόνιμη κατοίκηση. Από τότε εμφανίζεται το όνομα του Ορχομενού σε λιγοστές πινακίδες Γραμμικής Γραφής Β΄. Δεν υπάρχουν ωστόσο αποδείξεις ότι μπορεί ο Ορχομενός να ελεγχόταν από κάποιο εκ των μυκηναϊκών ανακτορικών κέντρων, είτε της Αργολίδος είτε της Μεσσηνίας, είτε δε και της Λακωνίας. Μετά από το κενό των Σκοτεινών Αιώνων που δεν προσέφεραν αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα, ο Ορχομενός και οι γύρω περιοχές επανακατοικηθήκαν. Ευρήματα των Γεωμετρικών Χρόνων, όπως μεταλλικά ελάσματα και πόρπες με ανάγλυφες παραστάσεις πιστοποιούν τις λατρευτικές πρακτικές για μια γυναικεία θεότητα σε ανοικτό χώρο πάνω στην Ακρόπολη του Ορχομενού. Στους Αρχαϊκούς Χρόνους ο Ορχομενός γίνεται η έδρα των βασιλέων της Αρκαδίας σύμφωνα με αρχαίες πηγές. Τα μέχρι τώρα γνωστά αρχαιολογικά ευρήματα δεν αποδεικνύουν όμως κάτι τέτοιο. Οι αρχαίες πηγές αναφέρουν ότι ο Ορχομενός ήταν πόλη-κράτος. Στην ακμή του, η οποία σύμφωνα με τα έως τώρα αρχαιολογικά δεδομένα πρέπει να χρονολογείται στο δεύτερο τέταρτο του 4ου αιώνα π. Χ. και να συμπίπτει χρονικά με τα ιστορικά γεγονότα από το τέλος της μάχης στα Λεύκτρα και έπειτα, όταν αλλάζουν οι πολιτικές ισορροπίες στον ελλαδικό χώρο και ειδικά στην Πελοπόννησο, η πόλη-κράτος του Ορχομενού έλεγχε μια έκταση συνολικά 100 τετραγωνικών χλμ. Εντός αυτής πιθανολογείται να ζούσαν γύρω στις 4.000-5.000 άτομα. Τότε ήταν που στα πλαίσια ενός οικοδομικού προγράμματος η πόλη του Ορχομενού δημιούργησε την αγορά της στην Ακρόπολη. Εκεί βρισκόταν το πολιτικό, οικονομικό και θρησκευτικό της κέντρο, το οποίο αντιπροσώπευαν δημόσια κτήρια, όπως δύο στοές, ένας ναός αφιερωμένος στην Άρτεμη Μεσοπολίτιδα - την κύρια θεότητα του Ορχομενού, η λατρεία της οποίας στην θέση αυτή χρονολογείται ήδη από την Γεωμετρική Εποχή - με το βωμό του και ένα θέατρο χωρητικότητας 4.000 θεατών. Η κάτω πόλη εκτεινόταν στις νότιες και βορειοδυτικές υπώρειες του λόφου που στέγαζε την ορχομένια Ακρόπολη. Υπό τον οικονομικό έλεγχο του Ορχομενού βρίσκονταν για μικρό χρονικό διάστημα πόλεις στο νοτιοδυτικό του όριο. Σε αυτές περιλαμβάνονταν οι πόλεις Μεθύδριον, Θισόα και Τεύθις.
Η ακμή του Ορχομενού κατά το δεύτερο τέταρτο του 4ου αιώνα π. Χ., όπως αντικατοπτρίζεται από τον υλικό του πολιτισμό είναι αποτέλεσμα των πολιτικών ζυμώσεων της εποχής εκείνης. Ειδικά η νομισματοκοπία της πόλης μοιάζει να εμφανίστηκε ως μια προσπάθεια να αναδυθεί η πολιτική, θρησκευτική και πολιτιστική ταυτότητα του Ορχομενού εντός του αρκαδικού και πελοποννησιακού συνόλου της εποχής εκείνης. Η παρακμή του Ορχομενού επήλθε με τους πολέμους των Διαδόχων κατά την Ελληνιστική Εποχή. Η πόλη δεν εξέδωσε από τότε δικά της νομίσματα. Ο πληθυσμός και η έκτασή της πρέπει επίσης να συρρικνώθηκαν. Μόνο στα πρώτα χρόνια της κυριαρχίας του Σεπτίμιου Σεβήρου κατάφερε ο Ορχομενός να τυπώσει και πάλι νομίσματα, μέσω των οποίων επιχείρησε να αναστήσει την αίγλη του αξιοποιώντας την μυθολογική αρκαδική και την ρωμαϊκή αυτοκρατορική εικονογραφία.

Politics of landscape, sense of architecture: once again on the origins of Helena Radziwiłł’s Arkadia

Summary
The subject of this article is the narration on the origin of Arkadia and the way in which it manipulates the categories of landscape park and architecture. Arkadia, a garden founded by Helena Radziwiłł circa 1777, is usually considered in the context of current fashions, women’s patronage, women’s rivalries or the presumed exalted personality of
the Duchess.  Most of the researchers dealing with Arkadia created their narratives basing on the second-hand materials, while the actual archives (correspondence, expensa) were rarely quoted. Consequently, the iconographic material which circulates in the literature, for many years stayed the same. For this reason, the purpose of this article is to break the deadlock in research and draw readers’ attention to the
unrecognised problems: the political aspect of Radziwiłł’s project, the role which played in it the tradition of local aristocratic patronage, and finally: the significance of landscape elements in Arkadia (and not only its “hidden meanings”, as it was thus far claimed).

In addition to its impressive fortification circuit, the ancient Greek city of Mantineia was further safeguarded by a number of signal towers located along the periphery of its territory. Combining a review of the published literature with satellite reconnaissance and personal observation, this article is the first detailed architectural study and synthesis of all known Mantineian signal towers. Having examined their construction and location, and by applying viewshed analyses in the chronological and historical context of the region, it is shown how these signal towers, including two previously unknown examples, functioned together as parts of a larger defensive system built to protect both the polis and chora of Mantineia from all cardinal directions.

Pharrasians used the tradition as a perceptive refuge against their enemies (Spartans overall). Beside it was Mount Lykaion, the cultic centre of the community, the symbol around which it was structured. This sacred mountain did not need to be monumentalised because its position, chosen by Gods, was splendid enough, so high that, from its top, the whole Peloponnese could be seen, as Pausanias says. In this case, perception builds the sacred. The physical representation is not necessary because the Pharrasian code of values lends meaning to the mountain. However, the code changes with society. Geological elements were the same but in the 4th century Megalopolis monumentalised the Sacred Mountain and built another landscape. We cannot know if Megalopolis recovered, conserved, misapplied or invented the Mount Lykaion, with its anthropophagic and cannibal rites, but we can say that they used the beliefs and the landscape built as a political and social weapon.

The human sacrifice is a very frequent image of Ancient Religions, concretely in the Ancient Greek Religion and its study has created many discussions between different historiographic trends. Answering the question about if Humans were or not sacrificed in Mount Lykaion, literary sources seem to tell that Greeks believed it and, therefore, sacrifices are real. They, sacrifices, are used as a way of building a landscape so as a way of building reality.

This paper focuses on political ideas of Demosthenes in his speech "For the Megalopolitans" (352 BC). It presents the orator's attitude towards Sparta and Thebes and shows his plans of reviving Athenian external politics.

Landscape builds identity and extraurban sanctuaries, which are built in the limits of the territories of the poleis, help to this building. The functions of the extraurban sanctuaries are various. They mark the limits of the territory, materially and perceptively; they build a religious world which functions as a vital reference and they draw a special social order that is characteristic of states. The sanctuary of Apollo at Bassai, that bears a perceptive relation to the sanctuaries in Mount Kotilon, was understood, outside, as the identity Phigaleian spot against the Spartan enemy and, inside, as the image of the elite´s power. The rebuildings of the temple were always connected to the political  hazards of Phigaleia, Messenia and Sparta and the cult of Apollo Epikourios was in relation to the war and, concretely, to the mercenaries.

Among the coin issues produced by Tegea in the 4th century BC there is a short issue of silver hemidrachms bearing the head of Athena on the obverse and a warrior in fighting stance on the reverse. Such a male figure appears also on later bronze issues of the polis (late 3rd – early 2nd century BC). The question of the identity of the warrior had been posed from early on in research, with the answer remaining in doubt; gradually there has been a tendency to identify the figure with Kepheus, a mythical king of Tegea. Kepheus is shown on bronze issues of a later dating (third quarter of the 1st century BC), receiving with his daughter a lock of Medusa’s hair from Athena. It is arguable, however, if there are substantial reasons to support the linkage of the fighting combatant to Kepheus once more. On the other hand, the coin type under discussion bears a close iconographic resemblance with a marble relief figure that is on display in the Archaeological Museum of Tegea (similar weapons, heroic nudity and fighting stance); the relief is dated in 4th century BC and bears the name ΕΧΕΜΟC, which was inscribed much later in the 1st or the 2nd century AD.
The identification of the warrior on the coins with Echemos, another mythical king of Tegea, is put forward as more plausible, while at the same time several aspects of the matter are examined. Quite importantly, the probable dating of the initial silver issue based on numismatic criteria, as well as its interpretation as carrier of a tale reified within a given historical context. Moreover, the possible connection to a historical event as raison d’être for the re-emergence of the coin type on Hellenistic bronzes of the city. The whole approach attempts to largely deal with the coined identity as a reflection of monumental memory and a component of ‘intentional’ story-telling. Case in point, functioning as assertions of identity and alterity, the Tegeatan coins project a message conveying a narrative of the past through a perspective of the collective imaginaire in the present.

Ανάμεσα στις νομισματικές κοπές που εξέδωσε η Τεγέα κατά τον 4ο αι. π.Χ. υπάρχει μία βραχεία κοπή αργυρών ημιδράχμων που φέρει κεφαλή Αθηνάς ως εμπροσθότυπο και έναν πολεμιστή σε στάση μάχης ως οπισθότυπο. Μια ανάλογη ανδρική μορφή εμφανίζεται επίσης σε υστερότερες χάλκινες κοπές της πόλεως (τέλη 3ου – αρχές 2ου αι. π.Χ.). Το ερώτημα ως προς την ταυτότητα του πολεμιστή είχε τεθεί από νωρίς στην έρευνα, με την απάντηση να παραμένει εν αμφιβόλω· σταδιακά επικράτησε μια τάση να ταυτίζεται η μορφή με τον Κηφέα, μυθικό βασιλέα της Τεγέας. Ο Κηφεύς εμφανίζεται σε μεταγενέστερες χάλκινες εκδόσεις (γ´ τέταρτο του 1ου αι. π.Χ.) να λαμβάνει μαζί με την κόρη του έναν βόστρυχο της Μέδουσας από την Αθηνά. Είναι συζητήσιμο ωστόσο αν υπάρχουν βάσιμοι λόγοι που να υποστηρίζουν τη σύνδεση του μαχόμενου πολεμιστή επίσης με τον Κηφέα. Από την άλλη πλευρά, ο εν λόγω νομισματικός τύπος παρουσιάζει μεγάλη εικονογραφική εγγύτητα με τη μορφή ενός μαρμάρινου αναγλύφου που βρίσκεται εκτεθειμένο στο Αρχαιολογικό Μουσείο Τεγέας (παρόμοια όπλα, ηρωική γυμνότητα και στάση)· το ανάγλυφο χρονολογείται στον 4ο αι. π.Χ. και φέρει το όνομα ΕΧΕΜΟC, το οποίο χαράχθηκε πολύ αργότερα, μέσα στον 1ο ή στον 2ο αιώνα μ.Χ.
Η ταύτιση του πολεμιστή στα νομίσματα με τον Έχεμο, έναν άλλο μυθικό βασιλέα της Τεγέας, προτείνεται ως περισσότερο εύλογη, ενώ ταυτόχρονα εξετάζονται επιμέρους πτυχές του θέματος. Ιδιαίτερης σημασίας είναι η πιθανή χρονολόγηση της αρχικής αργυρής κοπής βάσει νομισματικών κριτηρίων, καθώς και η ερμηνεία της ως φορέα ενός αφηγήματος που γίνεται εμπράγματο μέσα σε ένα συγκεκριμένο ιστορικό πλαίσιο. Επιπλέον, ανιχνεύεται η δυνατότητα διασύνδεσης με ένα ιστορικό γεγονός που μπορεί να λειτούργησε ως γενεσιουργό αίτιο για την επανεμφάνιση του νομισματικού τύπου σε ελληνιστικά χάλκινα νομίσματα της πόλεως. Η όλη προσέγγιση επιχειρεί κατά βάση να πραγματευθεί τη χάραξη της ταυτότητας ως αντανάκλαση μιας μνημειακής μνήμης και ως συστατικού μιας «αποβλεπτικής» διήγησης ιστοριών. Στην περίπτωσή μας τα τεγεατικά νομίσματα, μεταχειριζόμενα προβαλλόμενες πεποιθήσεις ταυτότητας και ετερότητας, εκπέμπουν ένα μήνυμα που μεταφέρει μια αφήγηση του παρελθόντος, μέσω μιας οπτικής του συλλογικού φαντασιακού, στο παρόν.

Theolepsy is a very extended phenomenon in Greek Antiquity because the Ancient Greeks believed that the gods intervened frequently in their lives, positively or negatively. Pan is a god commonly associated to divine possession in two ways: the panolepsy (divine possession of a human) and the panic (great horror inflicted on soldiers during a battle). Though the origin of both phenomena is similar, there are some important differences that I analyse in this article.

The Spartan defeat at the Battle of Leuktra in 371 BCE not only saw an end to their centuries old hegemony in the Peloponnese, but this event also had far-reaching consequences for the cities of Arkadia. In an attempt to limit any future Spartan aggression, a confederation of Arkadian cities was established and several of them came together in defensive consolidations under the guidance of the Theban general Epaminondas. Besides providing local centralized habitation, the location of these new cities show that they functioned primarily as a system of fortresses. Extending across the Peloponnese from Messene to the Argolid, these synoikized communities were established specifically to control the major routes from Lakonia into neighbouring Arkadia. While three of these synoikized cities – those of Mantineia, Megalopolis, and Messene – are  especially well documented in the ancient literary and archaeological records, this paper argues that the Arkadian cities of ancient Stymphalos and Alea were also almost certainly part of the same overall defensive strategy. The geographic location of these two cities, their recognized membership in the Arkadia Confederacy, and above all, their relatively complex fortification systems which otherwise betray their relatively minor status, add considerable support to this supposition. Furthermore, although it is likely that the city of Alea already existed in its present location in the early fourth century, that Stymphalos represented a completely new and artificial foundation suggests it was part of this overall Arkadian defensive policy. In other words, while defensive considerations were of primary importance in the founding of any ancient Greek city, the case of Stymphalos specifically indicates that it was a city conceived first and foremost to function as an Arkadian fortress.

I am delighted to announce the Humboldtkolleg "Nachbarschaft im föderalen Griechenland: Kooperation und Krieg in lokaler und regionaler Perspektive/Neighborhood in the Greek federal state: cooperation, competition and local-regional tension", dedicated to the topic of intrafederal relations, which will take place in Trento (I)  and online (via zoom) on 26-27 October 2021 (9-19, CEST).
The Kolleg is financed by the Alexander Von Humboldt Stiftung and is part of a wider project dedicated to intra-federal and inter-federal relations with a special focus on the impact of war on federalism carried out by Elena Franchi in collaboration with Hans Beck and financed by the same foundation. However, the specific focus of the Kolleg is not so much on intra-federal warfare as on the issue of intra-federal relations in general (see concept below).
The Kolleg is also the final workshop of the Experimental Teaching Project "Interpoleic Relations and the Ancient Greek Federal State" promoted by CeASUm (Center for Advanced Studies in the Humanities) and the LabSA (Ancient Civilisation Lab). An introductory and a consolidation workshop will be organised on behalf of the MA-students of the Ancient Greek History courses and with the support of the History tutors and PhD students of the University of Trento.
