Balaghah

Secara ringkas, yang dimaksud dengan al-musawah adalah sebuah bentuk pengungkapan yang cara penyusunan kata-katanya disesuaikan dengan makna atau maksud yang dinginkan oleh mutakalim. Tentunya tanpa adanya pengurangan ataupun penambahan kata-kata yang dipakai dalam mengungkapkan makna tersebut. Atau bisa dikatakan sama antara makna dan pelafalan kata-katanya. Sehingga bisa dikatakan lafadz-lafahz-nya merupakan cerminan dari makna-maknanya. Seperti contoh pada firman Allah SWT:
وَمَا تُقَدِّمُوا لأنْفُسِكُمْ مِنْ خَيْرٍ تَجِدُوهُ عِنْدَ اللَّهِ
“Dan apa-apa yang kamu usahakan dari kebaikan bagi dirimu, tentu kamu akan mendapat pahalanya pada sisi Allah” (QS. Al-Baqarah: 110).
Dan sabda Nabi SAW:
الْحَلَالُ بَيِّنٌ وَالْحَرَامُ بَيِّنٌ وَبَيْنَهُمَا مُشَبِّهاتٌ
“Halal sudah jelas terlihat, haram sudah jelas terlihat, dan di antara keduanya adalah musyabbihat”

لا سبيل إلى امتلاك البلاغة إلا بمداومة النظر في كتاب الله عز وجل وأحاديث ‏الرسول ‏e‏ والاطلاع على روائع الكلام العربي شعرا ونثرا. وقد ساهم البحث في إبراز ‏أسرار البلاغية من علم البيان وأنواعه في الثلث الأول من القرآن الكريم، ويجمع فيه التشبيه ‏والمجاز والاستعارة والكناية دراسة تحليلية تؤثر نفوس القارئين لآيات الحكيم بأسلوب إعجازي ‏علمي. ومن ذلك إن صورة البيانية ترشد القارئين إلى التعمق الدقيق والحب العفيف للغة ‏العربية عامة والبلاغة خاصة.‏

ABSTRAK
Tiada cara yang berkesan untuk mengusai ilmu Balaghah melainkan dengan ‎cara mengkaji isi kandungan Kitab Al-Quran, Hadis-Hadis Nabi Sollallahu Alaihi ‎Wasallam dan karya-karya arab dalam penulisan sastera. Kajian ini akan menyingkap ‎rahsia-rahsia Ilmu Balaghah dari sudut perbahasan Ilmu Bayan (Penerangan) dan jenis-‎jenisnya yang terdapat dalam satu pertiga yang pertama dalam Al-Quran, dan kajian ‎ini juga membahaskan tentang Tashbih, Majaz, Istiaarah dan Kinayah di dalam Al-‎Quran secara syantasis dan akan memberi kesah yang mendalam kepada para pembaca ‎terhadap ayat-ayat Al-Quran yang maha agung. Begitu juga, dengan mendalami Ilmu ‎Bayan ini dapat memberi panduan kepada para pembaca untuk mendalami intipati Al-‎Quran dan cinta terhadap Bahasa Arab secara amnya dan Balaghah secara khusus.‎

Badi’ secara bahasa: temuan yang belum ada sebelumnya. Badi’ diambil dari kata: bada’ syai’ wa abda’ahu (menciptakan sesuatu dan mengadakannya), temuan atau ciptaan yang tidak ada contoh sebelumnya. Sedang secara istilah, ialah suatu ilmu yang dengannya dapat diketahui bentuk-bentuk dan keutamaan-keutamaan yang dapat menambah nilai keindahan dan estetika suatu ungkapan, membungkusnya dengan bungkus yang dapat memperbagus dan mepermolek ungkapan itu, disamping relevansinya dengan tuntutan keadaan.

Menurut etimologi Khabar berarti Berita, sedangkan menurut terminology adalah :
الخبر هو ما يحتمل الصدق والكذب لذاته
“Kalam khobar adalah kalam yang mengandung kebenaran dan kedustaan karena esensinya”.
Yang dimaksud dengan kebenaran suatu khabar adalah jikalau keberadaan khabar tersebut sesuai dengan kenyataannya, sedangkan yang dimaksud dengan salahnya suatu khobar adalah apabila tidak sesuai dengan kenyataan.

QS. Al-Baqarah: 284-286 merupakan salah satu ayat yang dibaca dalam tahlil. Pendekatan balaghah dalam kajian ayat tersebut mengemukakan bahwa pemaknaan terhadap ayat al-Qur'an tidak dapat kemudian hanya dilihat dari sebagian ayat saja, namun harus dipahami secara menyeluruh.

The Language Style in Surah Luqman Based on The Rules of Arabic Metaphor Science

ABSTRACT
Quran is a holy words of Allah which consists of 114 surahs ranging from Surah Al-fatihah to An-nas. The Luqman is a makkiyah letter, it is the 31st letter consisting of 32 verses. Named Luqman because of the content in the letter that tells a lot about the story of Luqman and his family, especially his style of educating his lovely son.
Regardless of what is contained in it, there are language used to beautify the letter which can be studied with balaghah science. Balaghah or rhetoric is an art of managing the written and spoken style of language and this science brings someone to know the scientific miracles of Quran. This science is divided into 3 kinds; Ma'ani, Bayan and Badi. Therefore, the author wants to examine the figurative structure which target is the science of bayan, namely in terms of tasybih, isti'arah, kinayah and majaz.
The method that the researcher used in this research is descriptive analysis. She collected the primary data from Al-Quran Al-Karim and secondary data from rhetoric science references, i'jaz Al-Quran, and other sources relevant to this research. She was then classified and explained the data before summarizing the results.
The results of this research namely; the number of figurative language style in the form of at-tasybih was found in the 7th and 22nd verses, the al-isti'arah figurative language style was in the 6th, 7th, 19th, 22nd and 24th verses whereas al-kinayah figurative language style was found in verses 14, 18, 22, 27, and 33, as well as al-majaz figurative language style was found in verses 22 and 33.

Qissah qur’aniyyah merupakan salah satu bentuk penyampaian yang
terdapat dalam al-Quran bagi menjelaskan isi kandungannya. Bentuk ini
mempunyai ciri-ciri yang amat istimewa dan ia tidak boleh disamakan
dengan seni “cerita” dalam bidang kesusasteraan. Ia membawa makna
yang sarat dengan pengajaran bagi manfaat umat manusia jika mereka
berfikir mengenai kewujudannya. Oleh itu, pengajaran yang terdapat dalam
qissah qur’aniyyah menjadi tujuan utama ia dimanfaatkan dalam al-Quran.
Qissah qur’aniyyah ini dilihat tidak bersifat rinci, tetapi kekal membawa
pengajaran yang jelas bagi ayat al-Quran. Surah al-Kahf merupakan surah
al-Quran yang mengandungi empat qissah qur’aniyyah utama iaitu qissah
pemuda Ashab al-Kahf, pemilik dua buah kebun, nabi Musa dan Khidir dan
Dhu al-Qarnayn. Di samping itu, banyak hadis yang menganjurkan bacaan
surah al-Kahf pada setiap hari Jumaat, seterusnya menjadi petunjuk
bahawa isi kandungannya membawa banyak pengajaran yang amat baik.
Makalah ini berusaha menganalisis qissah qur’aniyyah yang terdapat
dalam surah al-Kahf serta mengenal pasti fungsinya dalam membawa
pengajaran kepada pembaca al-Quran. Untuk itu, kaedah analisis teks akan
digunakan dengan panduan beberapa buah kitab tafsir dan hadis berautoriti.
Makalah mendapati bahawa pengajaran daripada qissah qur’aniyyah yang
terkandung dalam surah al-Kahf merupakan antara sebab ia menjadi surah
yang dianjurkan oleh Rasulullah SAW untuk dibaca pada setiap hari Jumaat.

Salah satu cara untuk menyingkap keistemewaan ayat-ayat al-Qur’an adalah dengan melalui pendekatan ilmu balaghah. Secara garis besar, ilmu balaghah terbagi atas tiga bagian, yaitu ma’ani, bayan dan badi’. Ilmu ma’ani berfokus pada  ihwal lafazh atau kata bahasa arab yang sesuai dengan tuntutan situasi dan kondisi. Ilmu bayan bertujuan untuk mengungkapkan maksud dengan berbagai cara, sesuai dengan kondisi orang yang diajak bicara. Sedangkan ilmu badi’, selain menekankan pada fashih-nya kalam, juga menekankan tertanamnya kesan mendalam dalam hati.

Kajian ini merupakan satu kajian berbentuk analisis terhadap sebuah karya puisi A. Samad Said iaitu “Al-Amin”. Puisi “Al-Amin” ini memaparkan kisah hidup Nabi Muhammad SAW. Kajian ini turut membuat penelitian mengenai situasi masyarakat sekeliling tentang kemunculan serta kebangkitan perbincangan berkaitan sastera Islam di Malaysia. Ia bertujuan untuk memperlihatkan konsep pemikiran yang mendasari perbincangan sastera Islam dengan menjadikan “Al-Amin” sebagai bahan kajian. Pemahaman yang tepat mengenai perkara asas serta ciri-ciri Islam dan sastera Islam turut dibincangkan dalam kajian ini. Selain itu, kajian juga membincangkan nilai estetik atau keindahan dalam pemahaman retorik bahasa Melayu dan Arab menerusi puisi “Al-Amin”. Selain itu, kajian mengambil peluang merakamkan penghargaan atas usaha A. Samad Said untuk memperkenalkan seni puisi Islam bukan sahaja sebagai satu wadah untuk tujuan kerohanian, juga untuk memperoleh ilmu berkaitan sejarah Islam melalui seni sastera. Hal ini merupakan satu usaha membuka jalan kepada penghasilan lebih banyak lagi karya sastera Islam pada masa akan datang.

This working paper presents a 16th- or 17th-century Ottoman translation-cum-commentary of the preface and introduction of one of the classics of Islamicate rhetoric, al-Qazwīnī’s Talkhīṣ al-Miftāḥ (The Key’s Digest), a 14th-century work on rhetoric based on al-Sakkākī’s 13th-century seminal Miftāḥ al-ʿUlūm (The Key of Sciences). This particular work is translated not because of its exceptional quality, but—quite on the contrary—because of its emblematic nature, as it provides us with a glimpse of the kind of texts on rhetoric that madrasa students throughout the Ummah engaged with, and—perhaps even more importantly—with a glimpse of the way in which they did so: through interlinear translations and/or commentaries. Al-Qazwīnī as the author and Gürānī as the translator-cum-commentator walk the student through some highly condensed definitions of “eloquence” and “rhetoric”, each of which is defined first and foremost negatively and hardly ever positively (negatively as the absence of tanāfur al-ḥurūf, gharāba, mukhālafat al-qiyās al-lughawī, al-karāha fī l-samʿ, ḍaʿf al-taʾlīf, tanāfur al-kalimāt, taʿqīd, kathrat al-takrār, and tatābuʿ al-iḍāfāt; positively as muṭābaqa li muqtaḍā l-ḥāl). The text concludes with a rather confusing discussion of the branches of rhetoric and their nomenclature.

Karya sastera Islam adalah antara jenis karya seni yang banyak diperkatakan dewasa ini. Karya yang berkaitan dengan Islam dan tasawurnya ini seharusnya terus dikaji agar faedahnya dapat dikongsi bersama dengan semua lapisan masyarakat. “Al-Amin” merupakan sebuah karya puisi Melayu terpanjang buat masa ini, adalah hasil karya Sasterawan Negara Malaysia, A. Samad Said. Penghasilannya yang mengambil masa yang panjang, haruslah dihargai bukan sahaja dengan membacanya malah perlu dikaji secara ilmiah dan dihuraikan faedahnya untuk manfaat para pembaca. “Al-Amin” yang menceritakan sejarah hidup Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. ini memiliki nilai keindahan seni yang tersendiri, bukan sahaja dapat dilihat menerusi sudut tatabahasa bahasa Melayu, malah ia juga dapat dilihat dari kaca mata balāghah Arab. Jika dirujuk kepada perbincangan sastera Arab, “Al-Amin” boleh dikategorikan sebagai karya jenis puisi Pujian Nabi (shicr al-MadīÍ al-Nabawī) atau puisi Riwayat Hidup Nabi (shicr al-Sīrah al-Nabawīyah). Makalah ini cuba memperkenalkan puisi “Al-Amin” pada khalayak dan menyenaraikan beberapa bentuk keindahan seni di dalamnya, yang seterusnya dapat mencerminkan nilai tersendiri karya “Al-Amin” ini, berbanding dengan karya seni puisi lain yang berlegar tentang Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. Penyerlahan beberapa contoh keindahan seni daripada dua sudut iaitu tatabahasa Melayu dan balāghah Arab, dilihat dapat menyerlahkan isi kandungan puisi yang sarat dengan informasi berkaitan riwayat hidup Rasulullah s.a.w., meskipun masih ada beberapa kelompangan yang perlu diambil perhatian bagi penambahbaikan karya ini.

While narrative is a basic linguistic form used for describing human experience, narratology is a modern approach for studying the logic, principles, and practices of narrative representation. Although narratology is emerged for analysing literary texts, after the narrative turn in humanities in 80’s it became an interdisciplinary phenomenon whose main concern is storied forms of knowledge instead of stories. In this study, the issue of hadith and narrative is handled in the framework of these two questions: What is the nature of hadith narrative, and how narratology works for analysing hadith narrative.
In the first chapter, questions over the three problematic areas are posed as a basis for the main issue, the narrative. Firstly, the concept of imagination is discussed in the framework of narrative as representation of a certain reasoning. Secondly, oral culture is handled within the context of oral narrative. The second chapter is confined to narrative and narratology. Problematics on hadith, narrative and narratology are discussed in the third and fourth chapter. In these chapters, studies about textual analysis and/or reconstruction of hadith are examined besides a limited number of articles and dissertations on hadith and narrative. In the last chapter, the concept of hadith narrative is deeply analysed by its formation process, structural elements and discourse.
As the first PhD dissertation on the issue of hadith and narrative, this study aims to engage a thorough discussion of the case and shed a light for forthcoming studies, instead of introduce a new methodology. Although narratology provides a methodological basis for the field of hadith, developing an independent hadith narratology requires a series of studies on hadith, narrative and narratology.

Al-Quran merupakan sebuah kitab suci umat Islam yang diturunkan oleh Allah s.w.t. kepada Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. sebagai panduan untuk sekalian manusia. Al-Quran memiliki keistimewaan yang luar biasa dan tidak sama sekali dapat ditandingi oleh sebarang bentuk penulisan sama ada dari sudut gaya bahasa, mahupun isi kandungannya. Antara ciri-ciri kehebatan al-Quran ialah ia mengandungi elemen al-i‘jaz (mukjizat) dan al-tahaddi (cabaran). Aspek al-i‘jaz yang menjadi perbincangan utama para ulama ialah yang melibatkan gaya bahasa al-Quran. Hal ini dikenali sebagai al-i‘jaz al-bayani atau al-i‘jaz al-lughawi atau al-i‘jaz al-balaghi. Makalah ini akan menghuraikan satu bentuk gaya bahasa (uslub) al-Quran iaitu Uslub al-Hakim. Gaya bahasa ini dilihat sebagai antara contoh jelas membuktikan kewujudan al-i‘jaz al-bayani di dalam al-Quran yang secara langsung menyerlahkan ketinggian bahasa al-Quran. Beberapa ayat al-Quran yang berkaitan dengan gaya bahasa ini akan dianalisis bersandarkan kitab tafsir al-Quran bagi memahami elemen al-i‘jaz dari sudut bahasa pada ayat tersebut. Berdasarkan perbincangan tentang Uslub al-Hakim dalam makalah ini, dapat difahami bahawa bahasa Arab yang termaktub dalam al-Quran mempunyai nilai estetika yang tinggi serta membawa petunjuk ‘Ibrah Qur’aniyyah yang boleh dijadikan panduan dalam komunikasi. Kesemua ini merupakan bukti kebenaran al-Quran sebagai Kalamullah yang kekal relevan menjadi panduan buat sekalian manusia.

This article introduces al-Muṭarrizī’s (d. 610/1213) commentary on the Maqāmāt of al-Ḥarīrī (d. 516/1122), al-Īḍāḥ fī sharḥ al-maqāmāt. The commentary begins with a lengthy preface, which announces that it will provide the Maqāmāt’s reader with the interpretive tools necessary to recognize that al-Ḥarīrī’s Maqāmāt is an excellent, and possibly inimitable, text. The first portion of al-Muṭarrizī’s preface, examined in detail here, contains a collage of passages and paraphrases from the two major works on poetics by ʿAbd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī (d. 471/1078 or 474/1081). The article argues that al-Muṭarrizī, al-Jurjānī, and al-Ḥarīrī shared a common commitment to the idea that language ought to make apparent the intellectual hierarchies among readers. This overlooked aspect of Jurjānian poetics helps shed light on the reading and interpretive practices that informed the Maqāmāt’s enthusiastic reception as a text that was Qurʾān-like in its inimitability.

Al-Qur’an merupakan sebuah kitab suci umat Islam yang diturunkan oleh Allah s.w.t. kepada Nabi Muhammad s.a.w. Apabila ia diturunkan daripada Allah s.w.t., semestinya al-Qur’an memiliki keistimewaan yang luar biasa dan tidak dapat ditandingi oleh sebarang bentuk penulisan sama ada dari sudut gaya bahasa, mahupun isi kandungannya. Antara ciri-ciri al-Qur’an, ia mengandungi elemen al-i‘jaz (mukjizat) dan al-tahaddiy (cabaran) yang tidak akan mampu diingkari oleh golongan kafir. Selain itu, aspek al-i‘jaz yang menjadi perbincangan utama para ulama ialah yang melibatkan gaya bahasa al-Qur’an. Ia dikenali sebagai al-i‘jaz al-bayaniy atau al-i‘jaz al-lughawiy atau al-i‘jaz al-balaghiy. Berasaskan kesepakatan para ulama tentang kewujudan al-i‘jaz al-bayaniy pada ayat-ayat al-Qur’an, makalah akan menghuraikan dua bentuk gaya bahasa (uslub) al-Qur’an iaitu uslub al-hakim dan iltifat. Kedua-dua gaya bahasa ini dilihat mampu menjadi contoh untuk pembuktian wujudnya al-i‘jaz al-bayaniy dalam al-Qur’an. Beberapa ayat al-Qur’an yang berkaitan dengan dua bentuk gaya bahasa tersebut akan dianalisis berdasarkan kitab tafsir al-Qur’an. Hal ini bagi menyerlahkan elemen al-i‘jaz dari sudut bahasa pada ayat tersebut. Berdasarkan perbincangan tentang uslub al-hakim dan iltifat dalam makalah ini, ia dilihat dapat meningkatkan pemahaman pembaca terhadap al-i‘jaz al-bayaniy pada ayat-ayat al-Qur’an. Hal ini menjadi antara bukti kebenaran al-Qur’an sebagai Kalamullah yang akan kekal terpelihara sehingga hari Kiamat.

XIX. yüzyılın sonu ve XX. yüzyılın başlarında Çin coğrafyasında üç temel eğitim akımı görülmektedir. Bunların ilki Avrupa, ABD ve Japonya etkisindeki; ikincisi Rus demokratların tesirindeki akımdır (Muhammedemin, s. 434). Abdülkadir Dâmolla’nın Cedîdcilik usûllerine sadık kalarak başlattığı üçüncü eğitim akımı ise; içeriden bir hareket olması, millî ve dînî değerlere dayanması bakımından diğer ikisinden ayrılmaktadır.

Elipsis atau al-hadhf merupakan satu uslub yang terdapat dalam bahasa Arab dan juga bahasa lain di dunia. Uslub berperanan menyerlahkan keindahan sesuatu bahasa kerana mempamerkan kepelbagaian gaya bahasa dalam menyampaikan makna ayat. Al-Quran yang diturunkan oleh Allah SWT kepada Rasulullah SAW dan umatnya menggunakan bahasa Arab standard. Oleh itu, kewujudan elipsis atau al-hadhf dalam al-Quran menunjukkan bahawa pemahaman terhadap ayat al-Quran memerlukan pengetahuan yang baik tentang tatabahasa Arab. Hal ini menjelaskan bahawa ayat al-Quran tidak boleh ditafsir oleh orang awam tanpa penguasaan ilmu tatabahasa Arab. Namun begitu, hal ini tidak membawa pengertian bahawa ayat-ayat al-Quran sukar untuk difahami. Makalah ini membincangkan kewujudan elipsis (al-hadhf) dalam bahasa Arab dan kewujudannya dalam al-Quran. Beberapa ayat al-Quran dianalisis bagi memahami elipsis (al-hadhf) dan fungsinya dalam membawa makna ayat al-Quran secara jelas. Dapatan analisis menunjukkan bahawa pemahaman elipsis (al-hadhf) mempunyai kaitan yang rapat dengan kaedah tatabahasa Arab atau al-Nahw al-'Arabiy. Justeru, penguasaan terhadap tatabahasa Arab merupakan satu keperluan dalam memahami ayat-ayat al-Quran.

In his Al-Itqān fī ʿulūm al-qurʾān, al-Suyūṭī (d. 911/1505) draws attention to a Qur’anic rhetorical device by which an extra-scriptural occasion of revelation (sabab) causes the placement of a verse with a specific (khāṣṣ) intent, shifting the composition to a general (ʿāmm) verse on a related theme. This feature had been previously discussed in texts such as Al-Burhān fī ʿulūm al-qurʾān by al-Zarkashī (d. 794/1392) and Al-Ibhāj fī sharḥ al-minhāj by Taqī al-Dīn al-Subkī (756/1355) and his son Tāj al-Dīn al-Subkī (771/1370). The idea appears to have emerged from a connection Ibn al-ʿArabī (d. 543/1148) draws between an address with a specific intent in Q. 4:51 and a general expression in 4:58 enjoining the keeping of trusts (al-amānāt). This article re-examines the historical development of the sabab-khāṣṣ-ʿāmm process within tafsīr, uṣūl al-fiqh and ʿulūm al-qurʾān, and assesses its theoretical and practical viability for use in the analysis of Qur’anic rhetorical patterns. By drawing attention to other apparent occurrences of this device within Sūrat al-Nisāʾ for such themes as inheritance and marriage, it is argued that it can be reclaimed as one of the Qur’an’s instructional techniques and deserves consideration in contemporary discussions of scriptural rhetoric and composition.

Die vorliegende Arbeit befasst sich mit dem stilistischen Mittel الرجوع / ar-Ruǧūʿ, welches von den hier untersuchten Linguisten als ein recht knappes, fast schon unscheinbares Thema in der Bedeutungsebene (al-Maʿnawī) des rhetorischen Wissenszweigs al-Badīʿ  behandelt wird. Dieses Stilmittel wird unter anderem von vielen Rhetorikern auch als Istidrāk und manchmal auch Mutanāqiḍ bezeichnet.
Ar-Ruǧūʿ gibt einen Irrtum vor, der seinen Sprecher dazu nötigt auf das von ihm zuvor Gesagte zurückzukommen, um dieses schließlich zur Verstärkung von Liebe, Sehnsucht, Leid, Verblüfftheit, Lob oder Bemängelung  zu berichtigen.

The theory of nazm which was established by Abd al-Qâhir al-Jurjânî (d. 471/1078) to explain the phenomenon of the Qur’anic miracle has found its most fruitful application in the tafsîr literature and has directed the subsequent language, balâgha and tafsîr studies. In this thesis, Fakhr al-Dîn al-Râzî’s (d. 606/1210) understanding of nazm, who stands at an important point in the course of the theory, is studied within the scope of his thoughts in tafsîr, i‘jâz and balâgha fields. In the first part, the historical background of the concept of nazm exhibited in different scientific traditions. Here showed that the concept of nazm was first dealt with in a theoretical scale by al-Jurjânî, and has not found a serious response in the i‘jâz and balâgha literature in the period between al-Jurjânî and al-Râzî, and brought on the agenda both in theoretical and practical level by al-Râzî first time after al-Jurjânî. In the main part of the thesis, the concept of nazm examined respectively in historical order throughout al-Râzî’s three related works; Nihâyat al-îjâz, Nihâyat al-‘uqûl and Mafâtîh al-ghayb. In the study reached the conclusion that the theory of nazm has been taken over by al-Râzî instrumentally, neglecting its main issues and conceptual emphases.

"How did medieval Arabic literary critics evaluate poetry? Despite the abundance of surviving medieval Arabic works on eloquence and poetics, we know very little about the factors critics took into account when judging the beauty of a line of poetry. Much of what is known seems to focus on dry criteria of correctness, such as the accurateness of poetic meaning and language, its appropriateness, and its truthfulness. This dissertation takes a fresh look at medieval Arabic criticism by examining the question of aesthetic experience. It argues that medieval critics came to base their evaluation of poetic speech primarily on its ability to evoke wonder in the listener. Furthermore, it argues that the development of this theory, which seems to mature in the late 10th/early 11th century, represents an adaptation to the stylistics of muhdath poetry, the much debated "modern" style. This marks a shift in medieval Arabic literary theory from a school of criticism that based its evaluation of poetry on its truthfulness and naturalness (qualities associated with the classical style of the pre-Islamic poets) to one based on its ability to evoke wonder. Wonder, in turn, is linked to strangeness, farfetchedness, rarity, unexpectedness, and novelty (qualities associated with the new manneristic style of muhdath poetry). The first two chapters establish the presence of this new school of criticism in (a) the philosophical tradition starting with Avicenna's understanding of Aristotle's Poetics and (b) texts on literary theory proper, starting with `Abd al-Qāhir al-Jurjānī's work on imagery. The third chapter establishes its relationship with the muhdath poetry and shows how it articulates the aesthetics of the new kinds of literary figures that became popular with it. Finally, the fourth chapter, looks at discussions of the inimitability (i'jaz) of the Quran and argues that—also there—the underlying aesthetic is based on a statement's ability to evoke wonder. The dissertation thus reveals the presence of a widespread stylistic outlook based on wonder, around which a sophisticated theory of aesthetic experience develops, giving us a deeper understanding of medieval Arabic aesthetic values."

This volume provides a contribution to Arabic literary history
from an exceptional perspective. It examines the literary
expression
of veneration of the prophet Muhammad, primarily
the hitherto little researched field of praise poetry to the prophet
(al-madīḥ an-nabawī) and its diverse manifestations – as a personal
form of piety, literary contest, or musical performance.
Alongside emulations of the well-known 13th-century Mantle
Ode, the volume treats strophic poetry in the vernacular,
mawlid texts, prophetic praise in the maqāma genre and in the
Moroccan musical tradition (nūba), as well as prayer books
and letters to the Prophet‘s tomb. Many influential works and
poets are presented for the first time in Western research.

In his Muqaddima, Ibn Ḫaldūn (d. 808/1406) distinguishes between two meanings of ḫabar: on the one hand, the historical ḫabar, which is a true or false information, whether or not it conforms to reality; on the other hand, the legal ḫabar, which is a tradition of Muhammad, most often consisting of a prescription belonging to ’inšā’ (lit. "creation"). Ibn Ḫaldūn in fact articulates the two meanings of ḫabar on the opposition ḫabar / ’inšā’ which, from the 7th / 13th century, is used to classify the utterances. In the first part of this article, we show that the category of ’inšā’ (vs ḫabar) corresponds exactly, both in extension and intension, to that of performative utterance (vs constative utterance), introduced by the philosopher John Langshaw Austin (1911-1960): the first utterances to be categorized as ’inšā’ are indeed the legal performatives, to which were added, in a second time, the jussive utterances (ṭalab, lit. "request"). In the second part of this article, we retrace the progression of the category of ’inšā’ through the main disciplines in which it appears: the jurisprudence (fiqh), where it arose and which studies the conditions of an effective speech, especially the creation of contracts; the foundations of the jurisprudence (’uṣūl al-fiqh), which is at the origin of the subsumption of ṭalab under the ’inšā’ and which is equivalent to legal hermeneutics, where ’inšā’ refers to the creation of the norm; rhetoric (balāġa), where the opposition ḫabar / ’inšā’ structures the exposition of the first of its three components, the ‘ilm al-ma‘ānī (lit. "science of meanings"), which is a kind of pragmatics; the grammar (naḥw), through the Šarḥ al-Kāfiya of Raḍī al-Dīn al-'Astarābāḏī (d. after 688/1289), from which can be extracted a real pragmatic theory, for which category of ’inšā’ constitutes the conceptual part and fa‘altu, the first person of the perfect and the usual form of legal performatives, the formal part.

Western studies on Persian metrical system debate the linguistic origins of quatrains, (Per. robāʽiyyāt - Ar. rubāʽiyyāt) in Arabic, and regard prosodic Persian schemes independently of Arabic counterparts, despite reciprocally influenced metrical patterns. Attempts to dismantle Arabo centric critical inferences about Persian metres are largely prosodic observations of the robāʽi/rubāʽī, thus neglecting their ontological evolution from a metrical scheme into an aesthetically experimental frame in Persian and Arabic poetry. This study closely investigates the spread of robāʽī/rubāʽī from Persian to Arabic literature employing a holistic culturally embedded methodology to reread their linkages in global terms, as an example of an inherited “Proto-World
Literature”.

Studies in pragmatics have shown that cursing and foul-mouthed expressions (C/FMEs) are influenced by conversational variables such as the speaker-listener relationship, implicatures, and the context of communication. Within the Arabic linguistics tradition, and specifically with respect to al-balāġa, these variables are one of the main subjects of inquiry. Specifically, the linguistic naẓm of cursing and swearing and their features such as brevity (īǧāz), communicative impact (ṭabʻ balīġ) and use of figurative speech (luṭf li-l-maǧāz) reveal how these expressions are based on rhetorical patterns. Taking into account the jestful, foul-mouthed and/or libertine poetical style of muǧūn within the Mediaeval Arabic Literature tradition, the rhetorical patterns of implicit and explicit illocutionary C/FME acts, as mostly used in ironic/satirical discourse, reveal how C/FME can be employed as a powerful literary device. This paper aims to observe the rhetorical features of C/FME as employed in contemporary muǧūn, drawing upon the in-depth analysis of excerpts quoted from the poetic works of the Iraqi poet Muẓaffar an-Nawwāb (b. 1934), and the Egyptian poet Naǧīb Surūr (1932 - 1978).
