Barnett Newman

The main aim of the article is to explore the conceptual genesis of Barnett Newman’s artistic  «sublime». To do this, ample attention is paid to a 1947 critical text in which Newman articulates in philosophical terms a polarity that will rest fundamental in his pictorial practice: that between the “transcendence of objects” and the “reality of transcendental experience”. Generated in Newman’s reflection in order to detach his own painting from the great abstract European tradition, the idea behind that dichotomy served as a laboratory for the well-known essay Sublime is Now (1948). The article attempts to make explicit the fundamental convergence of metaphysical and physical
instances in the artist’s personal notion of the sublime, which links to a radical rethinking of the relationship between subject and object in painting.

Il saggio ripercorre alcune declinazioni contemporanee della categoria del sublime all'interno della cultura americana, analizzando diversi mezzi espressivi (pittura, fotografia, cinema). A partire dalla poetica di alcuni artisti legati all'espressionismo astratto (Rothko, Newman) e passando attraverso l'analisi critica del linguaggio fotografico e delle trasformazioni artistiche approfondite da Susan Sontag negli anni Sessanta e Settanta, la ricerca si conclude con la definizione di "stile trascendentale" proposta da Paul Schrader in un suo celebre testo teorico sul cinema del 1972. In questi diversi momenti dell'esperienza estetica contemporanea, centrale è la definizione di una nuova posizione e di un ruolo inedito da parte del fruitore dell'opera d'arte.

Just as Kabbalah appears as a multicolored patchwork in the spiritual life of the twentieth and twenty-first century, Kabbalah has impacted on art. Kabbalistic elements are found in different movements and styles, both in abstract works and figurative interpretations.
Motivated by a new interest in spirituality which emerged in the mid-nineteenth century, artists delved into philosophies which did not shy away from mysticism and the Occult. Kabbalah was also part of this revival of interest, although often aspects of Kabbalah which had merged with elements of Christian Kabbalah, the Occult and alchemy. In effect, quite different forms of Kabbalah may inspire modern and contemporary artists, depending on their identity, knowledge and religious or spiritual awareness. Moreover, most artists are not attempting to explain or illustrate (aspects of) the Kabbalah in their work, rather it is aspects of the Kabbalah that inspire their process of concept formation and the creation of art.

This comparative study of Jackson Pollock, Barnett Newman and Donald Judd's personal libraries questions the role of reading process and books collecting in their respective art work. This essay evaluates the library as part of the studio and aims to overstep the traditional opposition between two generations of American artists and their respective relationship to creation.

Cosa significa dire che un'opera d'arte è "ebraica"? E qual è stato l'apporto della teoria dell'arte propria dell'ebraismo alle innovazioni linguistiche introdotte dagli autori ebrei nel sistema dell'arte del XX Secolo? Partendo da queste e altre domande, l'articolo intende sviluppare un percorso esegetico volto a mostrare come l'identità ebraica si sia declinata, nelle sperimentazioni artistiche del secolo scorso, in forme e soluzioni linguistiche molto diverse tra loro. In particolare, la mia analisi si concentrerà sulle relazioni tra l'anicosnimo proprio della tradizione veterotestametaria e le tendenze astratte emerse nella pittura americana del secondo dopoguerra. Dopo aver discusso le peculiarità del concetto ebraico di astrazione, il mio focus sarà sulla loro declinazione - antitetica e complementare - nella produzione artistica di Barnett Newman e Mark Rothko.

In this article, I focus on selected aspects of the postmodern model of reception of the color field painting, which I call "figures of the unpresentable". Subsequently, I will demonstrate them in the changing history of the painting of Barnett Newman (1905-1970), one of the leaders of the trend in modern art of North America I am interested in. In my text, this
reception will be shown in a new, dance-related context. The postmodern model results from a theoretical turn in the framing of Abstract Expressionism and the relevant historical and artistic discourses. A major point of reference for the above turn, making it possible to transgress the
modernist foundations of color field painting and to see them in terms of an unfinished historical, artistic and intellectual project, was the postmodern philosophy of Jean-François Lyotard (1924-1988). In his texts dedicated to this art, the author invoked examples of US avant-garde painting, re-framing the fundamental descriptive category of Newman’s art – the sublime.

À l’intérieur du panorama de la peinture abstraite américaine des années quarante et cinquante du
vingtième siècle, la catégorie du sublime a connu une reformulation critique marquée par les
textes de Barnett Newman, « The sublime is now » (1948) et de Robert Rosenblum, « The Abstract
Sublime » (1961), qui d’une certaine façon encadrent la riche période de l’école artistique de New
York. La proposition vise, tout d’abord, à analyser le lien conceptuel entre le choix artistique de
l’abstraction (et le dépassement du paradigme de la mimésis qui en découle) et la possibilité de
produire un effet esthétique, mais aussi moral ou psychologique, sur le public qu’on peut ramener à
la dynamique du sublime.
Si, comme il est rappelé par Baldine Saint Girons, « le sublime semble d’ordre plus pictural que
musical », en vertu « de cette violence qui me situe face à lui d’abord en position d’infériorité », la
peinture américaine du vingtième siècle a exploré les limites de la toile (pure surface sensible opaque,
grandeur du format, dépassement du cadre, réduction iconoclaste) à fin de produire chez le spectateur
une expérience nouvelle de l’œuvre d’art, marquée par l’inquiétude et le dessaisissement du sujet. À
travers les écrits et les œuvres de Barnett Newman et de Mark Rothko, on va essayer, en
deuxième lieu, de mettre en évidence la nature de l’expérience subjective provoquée par des tableaux
qui se présentent comme des événements ou des performances placés dans le temps qui exigent la
présence du spectateur. Les enjeux de cette expérience dépassent la dimension esthétique pour aboutir
à une interrogation sur la liberté et l’autonomie morale et spirituelle du sujet humain.

In his essay on Barnett Newman in Painting as Model, ‘Perceiving Newman’, Bois accounts for the appeal of Newman’s address by positing that the artist’s work invokes ‘a world-for-us, neither the “objective” world described by mathematics or physics nor a kind of mythic space that one could [...] thematise with symbols and ideographs’. However, in this article it is contended that this ‘world-for-us’ is prefigured through the experience of decisive otherness. While Bois cites Maurice Merleau-Ponty’s early opus Phenomenoloy of Perception in ‘Perceiving Newman’, in this article Merleau-Ponty’s late writing is read via the aesthetic theory of Theodor W. Adorno to discuss how the in-itselfness of Newman’s art bindingly engages elements of experience that capitalism dismisses in favour of profit as the fundamental determinant of everyday life.

This essay discusses the development of abstract painting in the twentieth century through the lens of artistic process. Before the invention of pressure-sensitive tape in the United States in the 1930s, abstract painters were limited to creating the straight edges of geometric forms by either applying paint freehand or by using tools such as straightedges and ruling pens. But whether abstract artists embraced the use of such aids, which resulted in a more industrial aesthetic, depended initially on whether they considered their artworks agents of spiritual cognition, as Wassily Kandinsky did, or agents of social transformation, as Aleksandr Rodchenko maintained. After tape became more widely available in the late 1940s, Piet Mondrian and Barnett Newman incorporated it into their respective repertoires. While Mondrian never used tape for painting his bands, Newman developed such a mastery of applications that he effectively voided the dichotomy of earlier ideological debates. The essay also addresses technical issues in the work of Paul Klee, Josef Albers, Harry Holtzman, Burgoyne Diller, Mark Rothko, Bridget Riley, Jo Baer, Agnes Martin, and Richard Lin.

В статье рассматривается художественное течение абстрактного экспрессионизма в контексте их представлений о Возвышенном. Приводится их критика кантовского понятия «прекрасного», их теория сопоставляется с понятием «возвышенного» у Канта. Абстрактный экспрессионизм рассматривается в контексте послевоенной ситуации в США, а также в связи с критикой метафизики. Позиция Барнетта Ньюмана и Марка Ротко раскрывается как трансценденталистская.

A partir de una serie de pinturas murales que el artista estadounidense Mark Rothko realizó en los años 1963-66 para una capilla que lleva su nombre en la ciudad de Houston (Texas), se establece un recorrido por la teología negativa en las tres Religiones del Libro (judaísmo, cristianismo, Islam). El fin es establecer una relación entre la denominada «Escuela de Nueva York» (Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Barnett Newman...) y la mística especulativa, fundada en las ideas comunes -a la teología apofática y a la «abstracción contemplativa»- del 'Deus absconditus', la visión ascética, el despojamiento y la esencia de la imagen.

Summary:
From a set of mural paintings performed by the North American artist Mark Rothko during 1963-66 for a chape1 called after him in Houston (Texas), we can recognize a way through the negative theology of the three Hollybook Religions (Judaism, Christianism, Islamism). The aim is the establishment of a connection between the so called «New York School» (Mark Rothko, Ad Reinhardt, Barnett Newman...) and the speculative mysticism based on the common ideas -to the apophatic theology and to the «contemplative abstractionn»- of 'Deus absconditus', the ascetic vision, the dispossession and the image essence.

Since its emergence as an aesthetic category in the mid-twentieth century, minimalism has been contentious amongst scholars of all forms of art. It has been alternately celebrated, questioned, and condemned by not only its critics, but also the artists whose works have been given the historical title “minimalist.” This article explores the emergence of minimalist music, examining its relation to the earlier “avant-garde” works of John Cage and other eclectic influences, such as jazz and Eastern music. In doing so, this article attempts to establish a broad understanding of the elements integral to minimalist music, with a special focus on the composers La Monte Young, Terry Riley, and Steve Reich. The works of Riley and Reich are compared to the works of visual artists Barnett Newman and Sol LeWitt in order to highlight the pivotal elements of the minimalist aesthetic, including repetition, simplicity, and, to borrow Cage’s term, “Unfixity.” This article concludes that the minimalist compositions of the aforementioned composers ultimately demonstrate the integral characteristics of minimalism better than their visual counterparts, due to the temporal nature of music. However, the article seeks to demonstrate the importance of contemplating visual and musical interpretations of minimalism together, as they are complimentary windows into this modern movement.

Dos eventos, aparentemente distantes uno del otro y sin vínculos directos entre ellos, pero sin embargo estrictamente relacionados por un legado espiritual común, constituyen el tema de este trabajo. El primero, tuvo lugar en 1971, cuando una «capilla ecuménica» abrió sus puertas al público. Es conocida bajo el nombre de «Rothko Chapel», debido al proyecto general, realizado por el pintor Mark Rothko. El segundo evento, tuvo lugar en 1795, cuando dos jóvenes amigos, Hegel y Schelling, estaban haciendo una especie de juramento bajo el signo de una Iglesia Invisible, actualizando un concepto ambiguo que, incluso ar-raigándose en las Sagradas Escrituras, ya había sido condenado por las iglesias oficiales por sus consecuencias heréticas. La relación entre estos dos eventos está dada por historiadores del arte moderno que han establecido que la pintura abstracta, desde un punto de vista formal, tiene sus raíces en la tradición romántica. Con este trabajo me gustaría contribuir al establecimiento de esta conexión, no solo por medios formales, sino también mostrando una actitud espiritual común hacia las imágenes.

Desde la Antgüedad, el cielo ha sido una de las temáticas más recurrentes en la historia del arte. Si bien se le suele adscribir a las corrientes artísticas tradicionales, este texto versará sobre el inicio de la abstracción a principios del siglo XX y su triunfo después de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, especialmente en Estados Unidos. Desde este punto de vista, el punto de partida será la relación con el concepto de lo sublime en la producción de artistas como Barnett Newman y Mark Rothko desde finales de los años cuarenta y sus vínculos con otros anteriores, como Gustav Klimt y Kasimir Malevich, sin olvidar el simbolismo del arte paleocristiano y bizantino. La ausencia de elementos figurativos en la pintura abstracta, derivada supuestamente de su contenido profano, su subordinación a amplias superficies cromáticas y su ausencia de narratividad, puede relacionarse como veremos ciertos conceptos como el de sublimidad y eternidad.

[Since ancient times, Heaven has been one of the most important subjects in Art History. Although it is normally associated with traditional artistic trends, however, this text will be dealing with a period of time which begins with the rise of abstraction in the early twentieth century and ends with its triumph after the World War II, especially in the United States. From this point of view, the close association between the esthetic concept of “sublime” and the artistic work made by painters like Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko since the late forties will be the point of departure to establish a relation with some earlier artistic experiences (i. e. Gustav Klimt or Kasimir Malevich) and the symbolic influence from either Byzantine and Early Christian art. The lack of figurative elements in abstract painting, supposedly derived from its profane contents, its subordination to wide surfaces of color and its absence of narrativity, can be curiously related with eternity and the sublime.]

In occasioni di presentazione di una mostra e di un’artista, la pittrice Giovanna Rasario, c’è sempre un divario nella lettura critica, quasi poli opposti, con in mezzo molte le sfumature. Cioè scegliere tra la storia e la presentazione biografica dell’artista e della sua opera, la sua evoluzione e i suoi ultimi risultati, oppure al contrario, intervenire sul come leggere e interpretare e comprendere l’opera dell’artista, o meglio, come si usa dire, come stare davanti al quadro: critica d’arte rispetto ad un approccio solo storico se non cronachistico. 

In questo caso, i soggetti e le modalità di rappresentare, la produzione di Rasario mi hanno davvero spinta a preferire la presentazione e lettura e, come direbbe Clark, a ritornare più volte in osservazione del quadro: di ciò che, pur nel suo “stare fermo”, cioè appunto la materialità e mineralità del quadro stesso, evoca in noi meditazioni riflessioni sentimenti.

Per aiutare questa lettura, ricordo che Rasario lavora e dipinge dal 1964, ha iniziato con nature morte, poi ritratti e paesaggi e, nel tempo, è passata da un iniziale stile figurativo ad uno stile via via più astratto, mantenendo però il colore centrale nella sua produzione.

In particolare è dal paesaggio, con accenti sempre maggiori, che l’artista arriva ai quadri astratti in mostra, in cui quasi il paesaggio rappresentato è quello degli elementi invisibili ma pur reali: energia, luce, materia e antimateria.

Newman’s zips act as a kind of intervention or temporal event that differentiates the canvas, preventing Being from falling into the anonymous and impersonal il y a. The zip is what might be described as ecstatic temporality (ecstatic from the Ancient Greek ek “out” + histanai “to place, cause to stand out”). Time not only gives sense or meaning to Being, it marks the emergence of sensation, the physical materiality of something or someone.

One does not have to look up to the sky as a jaywalker in order to stumble. Sometimes, all it takes is to be in a gallery, enjoying the artworks, until you bump into a sculpture. This was at least the view of one of the most important thinkers and painters of American abstract art, Barrett Newman, who had said that “sculpture is what you bump into [i.e. by accident] when you back up to see a painting”. But our contact with sculpture’s blatant materiality will prepare us to accept the aggravating conditions of a life in constant struggle with its own imperfections and defects. A “bumping-into” reminds us that no one is Hyperion or if he/she pretends to be, descends finally from the celestial spheres with the speed and clumsiness of Super Goof.

The "Abstract Sublime" et l’actualité du sublime dans l’école de New York - À l’intérieur du panorama de la peinture abstraite américaine des années 40 et 50 du vingtième siècle, la catégorie du sublime a connu une reformulation critique marquée par les deux textes de Barnett Newman, « The sublime is now » (1948) et de Robert Rosenblum, « The Abstract Sublime » (1961), qui d’une certaine façon encadrent la riche période de l’école artistique de New York. Creo que una de las diferencias entre las teorías de ambos períodos reside en que los modernos pudieron tomar distancia rápidamente del restringido valor retórico al que estaba ceñida la sublimidad en el escrito de Longino. En los autores contemporáneos, por su parte, no se evidencia tan claramente una pretensión de separar sus formulaciones de las anteriores; contrariamente, puede entreverse una tendencia a retomar o recuperar
las teorías modernas, principalmente las de Burke y Kant, y aplicarlas con ciertas modificaciones a su propio contexto

The article at hand discusses a methodological question in aesthetics and art philosophy which applies to the analysis of concepts that cross through diferent historical contexts. The selected theme was a dispute for a historic aliance of the concept of the sublime along with the production and interpretation of contemporary art. Using as reference the sociology of Pierre Bourdieu and the historiography of Carlo Ginzburg and Reinhart Koselleck , the two first occurrences of this type of aliances are analyzed: (1st) an essay by Barnett B. Newman and (2nd) an article by Jean-François Lyotard. The result of these analyzes showed sensitive diferences between the two authors. Newman has a contruction that is creative and independent of methodological ambitions without the intent of reaching a truth, yielding an aesthetic which is particular to his artistic output. Lyotard provides us with a heterogeneous method in search of building true knowledge about art and human creativity, with the help of associative judgements, anisthoric postulates as well as the universalization of concepts.

Barnett Newman’s abstract paintings are often explicitly linked to biblical narratives by their titles. In particular Newman regularly revisits the Genesis creation story. In the wake of the destruction of the Holocaust, Newman sets out to tell a revitalized story of creation in order to establish a new artistic beginning for the Jewish people (and modernism) in twentieth century New York. Through careful and nuanced visual analysis of Newman’s Genesis paintings, it is possible to construct a detailed mystical retelling of the creation story that is rooted in Jewish scriptures and develops a new receptive tradition. These paintings give Newman the opportunity to recreate the world through proverbial wisdom, Kabalistic mysticism, and Hebrew scriptures in order to create a new and hopeful vision for the future in the wake of tragedy.

The painting of Don Shambroom Don Shambroom and his work looms large in my blogging that started in 2012. Mostly his opinions that have been shared with me either at visits to his studio on the Millers River in Massachusetts, via email or comments left on my blog posts. Just a presence that added up over time. What he had to say on culture and art were most often very prescient. He has a knack for thinking deeply about any subject that he decides to focus on. Most recently an interest in the life and work of Marcel Duchamp resulted in the publication of a monograph on Duchamp's last day published by the David Zwirner gallery. In order to write the book he had to enter and hold his own in the world of Duchamp scholars and chroniclers which was no mean task. When we first met at Yale and then again when our paths crossed in Boston exchanges were face to face. Since the advent of the internet these exchanges have been hijacked by the web and have become part of the very subject matter of his painting.

En 1948, Barnett Newman peint Onement I et introduit dans sa peinture une grande bande verticale baptisée « zip ». La bande de peinture répond à des préoccupations théoriques philosophiques fondamentales que l’artiste pense depuis longtemps ; Newman cherche à unir et diviser la surface picturale dans un même geste afin de créer une expérience de
sublime pour le spectateur. Onement (qui signifie l’harmonie et l’unité) est un balbutiement : la peinture est de petit format, la bande de papier adhésif est encore visible et la fonction du zip n’est pas encore pleinement définie. Alors que Newman poursuit ses recherches en
perfectionnant la technique du papier adhésif, au même moment, en décembre 1948, le peintre publie The Sublime is Now. Ce sont ses considérations philosophiques – des considérations dépassant largement le cadre de la peinture, liées au contexte historique de
l’après-guerre et au concept du sublime – qui ont mené Newman à la réalisation des peintures aujourd’hui associées à son nom comme Vir Heroicus Sublimis de 1950-51.
La frontière entre les activités pratiques et théoriques d’un artiste est sans doute plus floue que ce qui est généralement admis. L’acte de penser et celui de faire dans la pratique artistique s’articulent en un mouvement de va-et-vient. Ce mouvement s’exprime physiquement lorsqu’un artiste s’approche pour intervenir plastiquement puis prend de la distance par rapport à l’objet pour regarder, évaluer, mesurer, … avant de se rapprocher à nouveau.
Le maniement de la matière et celui de la pensée peuvent s’opérer dans un même temps. Certains ont nommé ce phénomène la « pensée matérielle » ou « la productivité matérielle » ; l’artiste crée et pense dans un même élan. Faire, c’est aussi penser. Inversement, l’acte de penser peut être un acte de construction qui n’est pas seulement abstrait et spéculatif. « La théorie, aussi, c’est quelque chose qui se fait, non moins que son objet » dit Gilles Deleuze. Deleuze fut un fervent défenseur de l’abolition de la dichotomie entre pratique et théorie qui sous-entend une valorisation de la théorie aux dépens de la pratique.
Or, le savoir qui émerge de la pratique artistique comme terrain de recherche – également appelée la « recherche création » – est celui d’une expérience particulière, d’un nouveau modèle de savoir. Si les expériences en laboratoire scientifique tendent généralement à réaliser des démonstrations ayant pour but d’obtenir un certain résultat qui confirme une thèse préformulée, dans la recherche artistique, le résultat émerge de méthodes qui relèvent de l’invention et qui ne sont donc pas toujours prédéterminées. Il est par essence nécessairement imprévisible.
Actuellement, il semble que les artistes théoriciens tendent à favoriser une approche hybride qui combine théorie et pratique en brouillant les conceptions traditionnelles des deux notions. Par exemple, l’artiste contemporain Stephen Goddard avait soumis, lors de son épreuve
doctorale, pour projet pratique une vidéo épistolaire autobiographique qui relatait le processus de création et, pour la partie réflexive, une lettre écrite dans laquelle il avait inclu une analyse de la lettre elle-même comme oeuvre d’art.
Au travers d’exemples d’artistes théoriciens contemporains, je souhaite mettre en exergue que les deux aspects (pratique et réflexif) de la recherche artistique sont des pratiques de recherche créatives entre lesquelles s’établit une correspondance profonde.

Distinguishing between the theory and the practice of art may afford artists a conceptual break, a creative opening through which the boldest of them take the risks necessary to find original ways to obtain images yet to be grasped. Throughout art history we can trace the linear narratives of progress as art historians sanction new visual discoveries, very often to support their own perceived “new art” movements. Later still, academics and theorists can focus their attentions on organizing and incorporating these new practices in visual art into palatable theories of art history.

Needless to say, not all artists are happy with this arrangement. When Barnett Newman spoke the above words about his art in Emile de Antonio’s documentary film, Painters Painting,(1) he was adamant that aesthetics, and those “aesthetes” he obviously disdained, were of no use to him in his art practice. Referencing their analyses of style or labels as “false issues” the aesthetes pursue as a matter of course, Barney made it clear that the practical creation of art is distinct from any systematic analysis, and then marvelously illustrates his point in a now famous statement conflating aesthetics with ornithology.

La constitution d’une avant-garde artistique américaine après 1945 s’inscrit moins en filiation avec l’héritage européen qu’une volonté de faire rupture, de repartir à l’origine du fait pictural allant jusqu’à questionner le concept du « beau idéal » comme forme pure. La transmission de l’image abstraite proposée par le modèle européen ne correspondait plus à l’évolution sociale, culturelle et politique de l’Amérique. Il s’agissait de libérer l’interprétation de l’œuvre pour « réinventer une nouvelle arme plastique » selon les mots du peintre Robert Motherwell. C’est pourquoi les expressionnistes abstraits de l’École de New York rejetaient certains points du surréalisme (la question de l’automatisme comme libération de l’inconscient). En revanche, ils voulaient exprimer devant la tragédie qui se propageait dans le monde « l’importance de l’art universel face au danger de l’art nationaliste » (Rothko), « la nécessité de créer des images dont la réalité est évidente en soi » (Newman) ou « les conditions qui permettent au tableau d’exister par lui-même » (Pollock). Ce faisant, ces artistes ont interrogé le mythe en s’attachant à plusieurs sources primitives allant des motifs de hiéroglyphes de l’antiquité (David Smith), l’art des Indiens (Pollock, Newman) ou la substitution des anciennes mythologies basées sur le fait social par l’individu en tant que figure solitaire prise dans un moment d’immobilité (Rothko). Si les formes abstraites contenues dans l’art primitif renvoient au commencement de l’abstraction comme acte de voir, il n’en demeure pas moins que le statut du mythe demeure un imaginaire instable qui se doit d’être réinterrogé. Ce passage d’une abstraction métaphorique à une abstraction déclamative implique de questionner ce qu’on entend par mythe ? Peut-être nous faut-il repartir de cette bande adhésive blanche qui parcourt les tableaux de Newman et qui comme l’a si bien montré Yves-Alain Blois caractérise « une abstraction qui est l’acte de création lui-même ». La difficulté de cette position tient avant tout d’une rupture avec la nature observée et observable qui n’est pas non plus la mise en forme d’une idée qui préexisterai au tableau ni même un formalisme dépourvu de signification. En d’autres termes, il s’agit d’interroger la notion d’expérience que l’œuvre projette aussi bien sur l’artiste que sur le spectateur. S’il nous faut abandonner l’illustration d’un sens a priori, la question du mythe tel qu’il est développé dans le processus de création n’est pas sans retour à la croyance en des forces inconscientes. La mise en place d’un imaginaire mythique va trouver une certaine assise dans le champ du film expérimental et nous prendrons exemple sur deux artistes. Chez Gregory J. Markopoulos – cinéaste de l’expression – ou le mythe se fait symbole et de façon plus métaphorique chez Paul Sharits, cinéaste rattaché au mouvement structurel. En revenant sur certains films et autres dispositifs, nous chercherons moins à travailler la confrontation qu’à interroger leurs travaux à partir des acquis théoriques de l’expressionnisme abstrait. Dans une perspective résolument interdisciplinaire, il s’agira de proposer une autre définition du mythe où l’expression de l’artiste devient davantage un moyen qu’une finalité en soi. Pouvons-nous définir l’objet artistique comme l’instrument d’une communication de sujet à sujet ou plutôt d’un sujet (le sens de l’oeuvre) par un sujet (l’artiste) à un autre sujet (le spectateur) ? Faut-il envisager le mythe dans l’avant-garde américaine d’après-guerre comme un imaginaire mythique dont les traces invisibles proposent en négatif un environnement sacré ?
