Bhagat Singh on Communal Riots and their Cure (Sampradayik dangen aur unka illaj) [First Published: in Punjabi monthly Kirti in June 1928]. This important article by great martyr BHagat Singh is relevant even today as religious polarization is the main trick in the hands of the rulers like the British to divide people.

Whenever a new writing of Bhagat Singh is found, the curiosity arises of the revelation in the new writing? Major General (Retired) Sheonan Singh after retirement from army, started looking for family papers, especially of his late father Ranvir Singh, who happened to be the younger brother of Bhagat Singh. Sheonan Singh had traveled a lot with his father in his pre-army life to different places. He had seen his father writing something in Urdu, which he could not read. Living in Faridabad in post-retirement life, when he started looking up for family papers, he found many loose papers in Urdu and English. Best thing he thought was to send these papers to Bhagat Singh Museum in their ancestral village Khatkar Kalan in Punjab, now touching Nawan Shehar renamed as Shaheed Bhagat Singh nagar. He handed over these papers to an acquaintance to hand over these to Khatkar Kalan Bhagat Singh museum, which was set up on ancestral family house of Bhagat Singh acquired by Punjab Government and the Govt. acquiring more land in near vicinity has expanded the museum to Nawanshehar-district headquarter now renamed as Shaheed Bhagat Singh nagar. While Sheonan Singh did not even kept a photo copy of the important documents, the documents rather than reaching Khatkar Kalan museum, found publicity in some Punjab papers in the name of a publisher. What could be known from this mysterious appearance of papers that Ranvir Singh was writing the biography of Bhagat Singh in Urdu and probably he could write up to his childhood period only, before he passed away. However, within these Urdu papers, there were few English documents of Bhagat Singh's correspondence with senior British officials regarding his surveillance by British intelligence. Bhagat Singh was an unknown young man of 19 or 20 years at that time, though intellectually very sharp even at that tender age. Interestingly writings of Bhagat Singh were publishing during his life time easily.

The centrality of non-violence in the Indian freedom struggle has been overwhelmingly accounted for, in the annals of history. “Narratives of the anti-colonial movement have been pre-dominantly framed within the context of the triumph of the influence of M.K. Gandhi’s Indian National Congress (hereinafter INC), in the dialogue with individuals who favoured violence as the primary means of political response to colonialism.”
However, the impact of the Indian revolutionaries in the evolution of the nationalist agitation is anything but insignificant. The goal of complete freedom from imperial rule was accepted by Mahatma Gandhi only in the early 1930s, as a fait accompli, under increasingly intense pressure from large sections of Congress cadres; a goal that was uncompromisingly articulated by revolutionary factions thirty years earlier. The formation and co-ordination of these factions across the length and breadth of the sub-continent as well as beyond its borders, further predates the widespread mass mobilisation envisaged by the INC.
However, it is also a fact that revolutionary activities slowed down in the late 1930s and did not feature as prominently in the final stages of the Indian national movement. This decline has been commonly equated with the failure of the revolutionaries’ means for achieving national liberation. It is in this context that the author seeks to revaluate the contribution of the revolutionaries in the struggle for independence, with a critical rather than commemorative approach.
The author shall begin by discussing the manifesto of the Hindustan Socialist Republican Association (hereinafter HSRA) and highlight the primary attributes of revolutionary ideology at its peak. He will then progress to tracing the differences in the ideological bases of the two major strands of the Indian revolutionary movement: the early Bengal revolutionaries’ vis-à-vis the North Indian faction.  He will then proceed to analyse the impact of revolutionary discourse and activities on the mainstream national movement and its role in mobilising mass support for independence. This analysis will form the basis of the author’s explanation for the abrupt decline in revolutionary activities in the late 1930s and 1940s. Additionally, the author shall substantiate the assertion that the decline of revolutionary operations did not imply the simultaneous decline of revolutionary ideology; it was rather adapted and incorporated into the mainstream national movement as a necessary consequence of the INC’s growing need to integrate diverse groups and interests in the freedom struggle.

2017. It seems to me that the propaganda of atheism as an integral part of the broader scientific socialist/Communist movement has become indispensable in today's conditions. The situation of my homeland specifically, India, has become worse under the tyrannical rule of the religious fundamentalist fascists. It remains the duty of us, the revolutionary socialists, to join in the explicit propaganda of atheism against the religious forces and also against the invalid theory of " Sarva Dharma Sama Bhava " (Unity of All Religions) under the garb of secularism as preached by the Indian Constitution. If we really want to materialize our dream of a " republic of reason " , where the diffusion of sympathy to all would become the sole guiding spirit; Then let us redouble our efforts at the present juncture and march ahead without confusion and fear.

Let us all try to understand the truer aspect of the young revolutionary martyr and Marxist thinker of India: Bhagat Singh, by eliminating the myths created by the right wingers. What was his and his Comrades' ideological background?

BHAGAT SINGH: A REVOLUTIONARY WITH A VISION History is the record of man's steps and slips towards progress. To write true history is always offensive to those who have an interest in concealing it. The sand of history is a too uncertain foundation on which time again we try to establish past interpretation based on the past actuality. Though we can lay down broad conclusions on this sand, if we pin up our faith with established theories they are likely to get washed away by the incoming sea of knowledge and new interpretation. As we know 'Historical interpretation can, therefore, become a two-way process where the needs of the present are read into the past and where the image of the past is sought to be imposed upon the present. The image of the past is the historian contribution to the future' 1. Whenever we discuss the freedom movement in India we have our set parameters which we apply to all the leaders and the events. The growth of Indian nationalism and the beginning of the freedom movement were the fruits of the Indian awakening of the 19 th century. It was indeed inevitable that its influence would not reach to 20 th-century .revolutionaries. Of all the revolutionaries Sardar Bhagat Singh's name illuminates brightest for his role, ideologies and sacrifice in the freedom struggle. However, it cannot be also ruled out the way his reference is more associated with the bombing in the assembly hall and the 1 Thapar, Romilla, The Past and the Prejudice, (New Delhi, National Book Trust, 2002, p1.

2017. Nothing is more valuable than the study & analysis of the revolutionary actions of a country, from which only a few are still regarded as "milestones" or "landmarks" in human history. The Delhi Assembly Bomb action, carried on 8th April, 1929, was among those few splendid revolutionary actions in India, that ideologically shook the imperialist system.

The martyrdom of Bhagat Sing, Rajgur and Sukhdev on March 23, 1931are great milestones in the glorious history of India's freedom struggle against  the colonial rule. These contemporary documents show how Periyar, Dr. Ambedkar and even Jinnah supported the struggle of these revolutionaries. It is to be noted that the Hindutva gang ruling India today which claims to be the only lovers of Mother India (Bharat Mata) though functional during those times denigrated these sacrifices.

23 मार्च 2019 को भगत सिंह, राजगुरू और सुखदेव का 88वां शहादत दिवस है।  उन्हें अँगरेज़ सरकार ने लाहौर जेल (अब पाकिस्तान में) इस जुर्म में फांसी दी थी की उन्हों ने अंग्रेज़ी साम्राजयवाद के चुंगुल  से देश को आज़ाद कराने के लिए मुक्ति-युद्ध छेड़ा था।  गोरे शासकों को यक़ीन था की इन इंक़लाबियों को जान  से मरने के बाद मुक्ति-युद्ध समाप्त हो जाएगा और उनके दुवारा प्रसारित किये जा रहे एक आज़ाद भारत जिस में बराबरी,  प्रजातंत्र और धर्मनिरपेक्षता होगी के सपने और विचारों पर विराम लग जाएगा। इतिहास इस बात का साक्षी है कि अँगरेज़ शासक, अन्य शासकों की तरह, पूरे  तौर पर ग़लत साबित हुवे। इन जवान इन्क़िलाबियों की  शहादत ने आज़ादी के विचारों को घर-घर तक पहुंचादिया और आज भी उनकी क़ुर्बानियां लोगों को याद हैं और प्रेरित करती हैं ।

लेकिन इन महान शहीदों की क़ुर्बानी की 88वीं  बरसी पर हमें यह क़तई नहीं भूलना चाहिए कि यह गोरे अँगरेज़ थे जिन्हों ने इन इन्क़िलाबियों को फांसी दी थी लेकिन उस समय मुस्लिम लीग, हिंदू-महासभा और आरएसएस से जुड़े काले अँगरेज़ या हिंदुस्तानी भी थे जो गोर शासकों की सेवा में लगे थे।  इन काले अंग्रेज़ों ने न सिर्फ़ इन क्रांतिकारियों के उद्देश्यों और आंदोलनों से दूरी बनाये रखी बल्कि  उनकी शहादत के मौक़े  पर शर्मनाक चुप्पी बनाये रखी। आरएसएस के 2 बड़े विचारक और सर्वसर्वा, के बी हेडगेवार (1889-1940)और एम् एस गोलवलकर (1906-1973) थे लेकिन इन शहीदों के बारे में, उनके संघर्ष को लेकर एक चुप्पी साधे रखी। आजकल हिन्दुत्वादी टोली के सरग़ना, आरएसएस को भी इन शहीदों की याद आ रही है।  इन के फोटो आरएसएस  आयोजनों में देखे जा सकते हैं।

March the 23rd (2016) is the 85th anniversary of the martyrdom of three of India's great revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev, who were hanged at Lahore for working to overthrow the colonial, 'firangee' government. The British government thought that with the physical elimination of these freedom fighters their ideas and dreams of a secular and egalitarian independent India would also dissipate and disappear. The rulers were patently wrong as these revolutionaries and heir ideals continue to be an integral part of the people's memory, their exploits sung far and wide in people's lore. On this 85th anniversary of their martyrdom we should remember, and not overlook the fact, that though it was the British colonial powers who hanged them, there were at the time organisations like Hindu Mahasabha, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Muslim League in pre-1947 India which not only remained alien to the ideals of these revolutionaries but also maintained a criminal silence on their hanging. It is both comic, ironical and shocking therefore that, of these three communal outfits, it is the RSS—which consciously kept itself completely aloof from the anti-colonial struggle –that has, of late, laid claim to the tradition and contributions of these great revolutionaries. Literature is being produced and the discourse too seeks to appropriate them with false a-historic linkages to Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. During the NDA I regime when its two senior swayamsewaks, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishan Advani ruled the country, they had made the astonishing claim that Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, founder of the RSS met Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev in 1925 and continued attending meetings with these revolutionaries and even provided shelter to Rajguru in 1927 when he was underground after killing Sanders.[i] In 2007, for the first time in its history, the Hindi organ of the RSS, Panchjanya came out with a special issue on Bhagat Singh. In the whole body of pre-Partition literature of RSS we do not find even a single reference to these martyrs. In fact, RSS literature of the contemporaneous period is full of anecdotes showing its indifference to revolutionaries like Bhagat Singh.

In March 1974, trade union leader and Chairman of the Socialist Party of India, George Fernandes, formed a new independent trade union of railway workers and then led a massive nation-wide strike lasting about a month. Two years later— March 1976—Fernandes was arrested as the principal accused in the Baroda Dynamite Conspiracy Case, a plot to bomb strategic targets in New Delhi in resistance to Indira Gandhi’s authoritarian rule. How did George Fernandes’ political work change over these two years—from engaging in traditional trade union movement tactics during the Railway Workers’ Strike in 1974 to being the ringleader of a plan to bomb strategic targets in resistance to the postcolonial state? Why would an activist who advocated non-violent social movement tactics change strategies and end up leading a movement that primarily uses violent tactics? I argue that in its violent repression of the Railway Workers’ Strike and its illegal imprisonment of the strike’s leaders, Indira Gandhi’s administration demonstrated to Fernandes and other opposition party leaders that there was no room for a peaceful solution to the ever increasing social conflict of early 1970s India. Therefore, when Gandhi instated herself as dictator, longstanding advocates of satyagraha believed that symbolic violence against the state was the tactic most likely to lead to the restoration of democracy in India.

Out of these the ideologues and the first two bosses of the RSS, KB Hedgewar (1889-1940) and MS Golwalkar (1906-1973) who were alive at the time of the martyrdom showed open hostility towards the cause and spirit of the martyrdom of these freedom fighters.

SECOND KILLING OF BHAGAT SINGH & SUBHASH CHANDRA BOSE BY THE HINDUTVA GANG
In a shocking development the student wing of the RSS put the busts of martyrs Bhagat Singh and Subhash Chandra Bose with the Savarkar's on one pedestal at the University of Delhi late in the night on August 20, 2019. This clubbing of busts of Bhagat Singh and Netaji with VD Savarkar is tantamount to 2nd killing of the 2 great martyrs who laid down their lives for the freedom of the country. Bhagat Singh sacrificed his life for a socialist-democratic-secular Republic and Netaji raised Azad Hind Fauj (INA) consisting of people of all religions and regions for armed liberation of India. The contemporary documents are witness to the fact that while Bhagat Singh and Netaji fought against the repressive British rule and the two-nation theory, as Savarkar brazenly sided with the British rulers and the Muslim League in order to defeat the all-inclusive freedom struggle.

2017. Bhagat Singh's Socialist India publishes an English version of a portion of text taken from Anushilan revolutionary Trailokyanath Chakravarty's famous Bangla book: "30 years in Jail...". This excerpt from the book deals with the meeting of Bhagat Singh and the Anushilan revolutionaries in Kolkata in December 1928, obviously after the murder of Saunders. This gives us another insight into the ideas and opinions held by Bhagat Singh about the ideal course of the revolutionary movement.

On March 23, 2017, we will be commemorating 86th year of the great martyrdom of the three revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. However, with every passing year sadness keeps on growing that so far as mainstream political set-up is concerned their sacrifices attract only ceremonial attention that too occasionally. Indian democracy despite being seven decades mature has brazenly missed two important aspects of these sacrifices.
Firstly, the colonial masters did not hang them only because that the former were trouble-makers like other ordinary convicts but put them on gallows because the British rulers were scared of spreading of ideas of justice, changes and independence championed by the martyrs. The then rulers erroneously believed that by killing individuals, ideas too could be killed. Secondly, these revolutionaries did not appear in isolation, nor their sacrifices were individual actions. These sacrifices on march 23, 1931 were part of chain of sacrifices of those revolutionaries who discarding the tag of ‘terrorists’ had become the protagonists of revolution with mass participation. Starting with the Kakori Martyrs (1927) they had declared that they were fighting and sacrificing for a new India where Socialism will prevail.

BJP's deleterious politics attacks our composite culture, seeks to tear apart our social fabric. However, a lesser known phenomenon has developed side by side. It came to light suddenly, with the toppling of Lenin's statue in tiny Tripura.

INDIAN FREEDOM STRUGGLE AS A MELTING POT

Right from 1857, India's Independence War was not fought in isolation. International ideas, theories, practices intersected in seemingly innumerable ways. Thus, not just our culture, but our freedom movement too, was a melting pot. Few know of the anti-British role played by Armenians, Arabs, Afghans, Anglo-Indians, even an Irish doctor, a Russian adventurer, Begum Hazrat Mahal's Egyptian-lady warriors, and 'Bob the Nailer', during 1857.

LENIN AND TILAK

The rise of Marxist and socialist ideas impacted India deeply. Lala Hardayal, one of the foremost freedom fighter figure during the early 20th century, contemporary of both Veer Savarkar and Shyamji Verma (eulogised by Modi), called Marx a 'modern Rishi'. Earlier, in the 1900s, during protests against Curzon's partition of Bengal plan, Bal Gangadhar Tilak developed his Swadeshi movement.

Advocating self-rule, the Swadeshi impulse was one of the first mass movements of India. The Bombay working class participated enthusiastically. The British targeted Tilak.

In 1908, Praful Chaki and Khudiram Bose, two Bengali youths, threw a bomb at the carriage of a British officer in Muzaffarpur, Bihar. Chaki committed suicide but Bose was caught and hanged. Tilak, in his paper Kesari, defended the revolutionaries and called for immediate Swaraj or self-rule. Slapped with sedition charges, he was exiled to Burma for six years in 1909.

Bombay's working class hit the streets again to protest Tilak's incarceration. Himself in exile, the Russian revolutionary LENIN HAILED THE STRUGGLE OF THE INDIAN PEOPLE, especially, the working class upsurge. Slamming the British as brutes, Lenin wrote: "The most liberal and radical personalities of free Britain…become regular Genghis Khans when appointed to govern India, and are capable of sanctioning every means of 'pacifying' the population in their charge, even to the extent of flogging political protestors!”

Blasting the “infamous sentence pronounced by the British jackals on the INDIAN DEMOCRAT TILAK”, Lenin predicted that with the Indians having got a taste of political mass struggle, the “British regime in India is doomed”.

LENIN, NEHRU AND GANDHI

The 1917 Bolshevik revolution under Lenin fired the Indian political imagination and affected profoundly, its course. Russian developments inspired the Ghadar movement, Khilafat impulse, and the Reshmi Roomal Tehrik.

Nehru was to write later that "almost at the same time as the October Revolution led by the great Lenin, we in India began a new phase in our struggle for freedom. Our people for many years were engaged in this struggle with courage and patience. And although under the leadership of Gandhi we followed another path, WE WERE INFLUENCED BY THE EXAMPLE OF LENIN".

Evaluating the Russian revolution, GANDHI himself said that “nations have progressed both by evolution and revolution”, and that "history is more a record of wonderful revolution than of so-called ordered progress”.

Afraid of the Indian Freedom Movement learning from the Russian revolution, or other struggles, like the Irish Independence war, British Indian authorities, began spreading canards against Lenin. Writing in Kesari, TILAK DEFENDED LENIN. Tilak wrote that, "LENIN WAS IN FAVOUR OF PEACE...he only wants justice for oppressed...he is popular among the people and the army because he distributed land amongst the peasantry".

LENIN AND BHAGAT SINGH

In the 1920s, several Indian freedom fighters took the revolutionary path. Bengal revolutionaries of 'Yugantar' and 'Anushilan' quoted Lenin freely; in North India, the Hindustan Republican Army (HRA) emerged as a major force. Taken over by BHAGAT SINGH and CHANDRASHEKHAR AZAD after the 'Kakori episode' and the arrest of Ram Prasad Bismil, Ashfaque Ullah and Thakur Roshan Singh, HRA was changed to HSRA--with the 'S' standing for Socialist. Lenin, ESPECIALLY HIS OPEN SUPPORT TO INDIAN FREEDOM STRUGGLE, deeply influenced Bhagat Singh and Azad.

Under Gaya Prasad Katiyar, a HSRA team went to Russia for arms training. Bhagat Singh himself wanted to go to Russia. But developments in the wake of Lala Lajpat Rai's death, led Bhagat Singh to kill Saunders, a British officer. Later, Bhagat Singh was arrested in 1929 for throwing a non-lethal bomb in Delhi, inside the Parliament hall.

During his prison term/trial, Bhagat Singh read a lot of Marxist literature. Singh's jail manifesto spoke about HSRA's aim as being, THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A SOCIALIST SOCIETY.

On 21st January, 1930, Bhagat Singh and his comrades read out a telegram in the British Court  that they wanted to send to Russia. The telegram sent "REVOLUTIONARY GREETINGS TO THE GREAT LENIN". Earlier, in September, 1929, Jatindra Nath, another staunch, HSRA admirer of Lenin, died in Bhagat Singh's arms during the historic,  jail hunger strike. When, finally, Bhagat Singh was summoned to be hanged, he was reading Lenin.

In 1930, the Chittagong armoury raid shook the British authorities. Kalpana Datta, a member of the Indian Nationalist Army under Surya Sen, was an ardent admirer of Lenin. Datta later joined the Communist Party of India.

In the 1930s, Lenin inspired Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Jai Prakash Narayan, and several other prominent freedom fighters, including Subhash Chandra Bose. From Allama Iqbal and Hasrat Mohani, to Subramaniam Bharati, Premchand and Nirala, almost all poets, men and women of literature, spoke in glowing terms about Lenin.

Promila, sister of BK Dutt and Durga Bhabhi were accompanying body on route to Calcutta. Hasrat Mohani had hheld meeting in the day, where Nehru spoke emotionally. Crowd was unprecedented in Kanpur history. Father of Jatin announced that he is proud of his son, but would not see his body and body was shown fire by Kiran. Jatindernath Sanyal the first biographer of Bhagat Singh in 1931, brother of Sachindernath Sanyal in his memoir has mentioned Jatin birth date as 27 th October 2004. B K Dutt has mentioned Rajendra Prasad leading procession in Patna and Jinnah's speech in assembly on Jatin. Translator's names are not given, could be MJS Waraich himself as well, but it is very useful book in Punjabi on Bhagat Singh's comrade and close friend Jatin Das.

Has Punjab welcomed every invader?

There is a popular belief that the Punjab has never resisted foreign invaders and internal usurpers. Such stigmatising of the Punjab is unjust and evidence of either bias or ignorance of history. The fact of the matter is that the Punjab resisted the invaders and the usurpers regardless of the outcome.

86th MARTYRDOM ANNIVERSARY: HINDUTVA GANG’S DOCUMENTED HATRED FOR MARTYRS, BHAGAT SINGH, RAJGURU, SUKHDEV
This 23rd March (2018) is the 86th anniversary of the martyrdom of three great revolutionaries, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev. They were hanged for the crime to overthrow the alien British rule in India. The colonial rulers like elsewhere thought that with the physical elimination of these freedom fighters their ideas and dreams of a democratic-secular and egalitarian independent India would also die. The rulers were patently wrong as these revolutionaries and heir ideals continued to be an integral part of the Indian people’s collective memory. 
However, on 86th anniversary of their martyrdom we should not overlook the fact, that though these were the British, who hanged them but there were organizations like Hindu Mahasabha, RSS and Muslim League in pre-1947 India which not only remained alien to the ideals of these revolutionaries but also maintained a criminal silence on their hanging. Shockingly, RSS which claims to be the sole repository of Indian nationalism and patriotism, kept aloof consciously from the anti-colonial struggle, has lately been making all out efforts to own Bhagat Singh as its hero too. It displays his photos in its public meetings but also twists facts as per its polarizing agenda. For instance, when Valentine’s Day is celebrated in India on February 14, it comes out every year with sensational messages on social media that this day should be mourned as black day instead as it was on this day that Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged. It is atrocious and shows not only disregard of facts but also farcical love for revolutionaries by the RSS. They were hanged on March 23, 1931.
Two years back Hindi organ of the RSS, Panchjanya came out with a special issue on Bhagat Singh while its English organ Organizer kept itself out of it. It has also has been churning out literature making astonishing claim that Keshav Baliram Hedgewar, founder of the RSS met Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev in 1925 and continued attending meetings with these revolutionaries and even provided shelter to Rajguru in 1927 when he was underground after killing Sanders.  We need to compare these claims of the RSS with its own contemporary documents.

1923 में विद्यार्थी जीवन में ही घर छोड़कर, खुद को ‘मकसदे आला....आजादी-ए-हिंद के असल के लिए वक्फ’ कर देने के साथ उनका क्रांतिकारी जीवन आरंभ होता है। उनके लेखन के उत्तरोत्तर विकास से उनके क्रांतिकारी जीवन की यात्रा को समझा जा सकता है। देशभक्ति और क्रांति का पाठ उन्हें परिवार से ही मिला था। दादा सरदार अर्जुन सिंह बड़े जमींदार थे। 80 वर्ष से ज्यादा की उम्र में भी वे राष्ट्रवादी गतिविधियों में बढ़-चढ़कर हिस्सा लेते थे। सरदार अर्जुन सिंह के भाई सरदार बहादुर दिलबाग सिंह सरकारी कर्मचारी थे; और सरकार की ओर से कई पुरस्कार ले चुके थे। भगतसिंह की दादी श्रीमती जय कौर घरेलू होने के साथ-साथ बहादुर महिला थीं। परिवार में राष्ट्रवादी नेताओं तथा क्रांतिकारियों का नियमित आना-जाना था। एक बार पुलिस प्रसिद्ध क्रांतिकारी सूफी अंबाप्रसाद को गिरफ्तार करने उनके घर पहुंची। तब श्रीमती जय कौर ने बुद्धिमानी और साहस के साथ हालात को संभालकर पुलिस को बैंरग लौटने को मजबूर कर दिया था।

My interest in Bhagat Singh and other Indian revolutionaries began when I was not even twenty years old. Manmathnath Gupt, himself a convicted revolutionary in the Kakori case, who later turned out to be a historian of the Indian revolutionary movement during the freedom struggle, aroused my interest through his Hindi book,'Bharat Ke Krantikari (Revolutionaries of India). I translated that book into my mother tongue, Punjabi, in the early 70s, and thus my interest took concrete shape. Formally I was a student of literature and did all my studies, research, and teaching in Hindi literature and translations and writing many books in the field of literary studies; yet revolutionary movements and revolutionaries themselves never got out of my mind. While professionally I continued to teach, research and supervise in the field of literary studies, I started working on my passion of studying and writing about revolutionaries. In 1985-86, a book, co-edited by me in Hindi, Bhagat Singh aur Unke Sathiyon ke Dastavez was published by one of the eminent Hindi publishers,

Great martyr Bhagat Singh was born in eastern Punjab and Lahore (both in Pakistan now). He was hanged with two other comrades, Rajguru and Sukhdev in Lahore. After Partition since these places went into Pakistan no interest was shown by the rulers in keeping his memory alive. Both his birthplace and place of martyrdom became obscure. However, due to persistent pressure of lovers of Bhagat Singh in Pakistan, the Punjab government has allocated funds to build suitable memorial to this great martyr. It is a welcome development.

Bhagat Singh, Rajguru and Sukhdev were hanged by the British masters on March 23, 1931. Rulers of India have made all attempts to erase their heritage because they stood for an independent India where there would be no exploitation. Bhagat Singh was leader of revolutionaries. He was a thinker and wrote extensively on different aspects of Indian liberation. Unfortunately his many important writings have been lost due to collusion of British rulers and those those Indian who came to power after the departure of British.

According to some newspapers reports Yadvendra Singh Sandhu, a distant relative of great martyr of Indian Freedom Struggle, Bhagat Singh (hanged on March 23, 1931 along with Sukhdev & Rajguru in Lahore) has invited Hindutva icon, Narendra Modi, Gujarat Chief Minister, who calls himself ‘Hindu nationalist’ and a member of RSS, to release Shahid Bhagat Singh’s Jail Diary in Delhi on September 29. The same relative had announced a high prized coffee-table book edition of this Diary in the beginning of 2013 to be released by the President of India. Now with Yadvendra’s change of heart and outpouring of love for Hindutva icon, President of India has been replaced with Modi.
