Bunker Archeology

Témoin de l’effort de guerre des Forces armées canadiennes lors de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la batterie côtière de Fort Péninsule représente l’un des ouvrages de génie militaire les plus distinctifs encore en place et visitables au Québec. À l’été de 2016, Parcs Canada a orchestré un projet de réfection de la batterie pour pallier les problèmes structuraux causés par les intempéries et le passage du temps dans le but de rendre le site sécuritaire et de nouveau accessible aux visiteurs. Cette contribution dresse le bilan d’une intervention archéologique menée en amont des travaux et dont l’issue a permis de recueillir des informations inédites en lien avec l’environnement et l’architecture de la batterie et avec quatre grandes phases d’aménagement se rapportant à sa construction, son occupation et son abandon par l’armée, puis à sa mise en valeur par Parcs Canada.

The Fort Peninsula Coast al Battery represents one of the most significant engineering works witnessing the Canadian war effort during the Second World War still standing and accessible to tourists in Quebec. In the summer of 2016, Parks Canada orchestrated the recapitalization of the main bunker to address structural problems caused by weather and the passage of time, and to provide secure visitor access. This article focuses on an archeological investigation carried out before the commencement of the recapitalization work which enabled the gathering of valuable information on the topography and the architecture of the battery as well as four major phases related to its construction, occupation and abandonment by the Canadian Army and its rehabilitation by Parks Canada.

In the city of Civitavecchia, close to the Poggio Paradiso hill, you can admire forty WWII bunker. It is a complex of structures built for the training school "Guastatori of Genio", which was established 29 July 1940. Sent to Africa, they participated in 1942 in the Battle of El Alamein and the few survivors, will give rise to what will be the future paratroopers brigade "Folgore" created in 1967.

Unable to afford advanced technological deterrents, Albania’s communist regime built 500 000 military bunkers as a defence against a possible invasion. These monoliths that dominate the landscape were thankfully never used for their intended purpose.
This body of work investigates the re-use and recycling of the wealth that the bunkers retain. Between the years of 1975 and 1988 an estimated 500 000 bunkers were constructed.  With so much wealth invested in these now useless monoliths, the citizens nowadays are extracting their inheritance by reusing the bunkers as cafes, restaurants, accommodation, and agricultural buildings.
They are images of the Albanian mentality today, a portrait of their lives set within the confines of their past. How they perceive and re-organise the failed state inherited from the bankrupt communist regime.

Scomparire è ancora meglio che tuffarsi sott'acqua: al costume dei ranocchi, preferisco quello dei topi. Non penso, però, a quelli neri e grigi delle case e dei giardini, ma al topo giallo-rosso della foresta tropicale, che somiglia ad un minuscolo scoiattolo. Si nutre di noci, di cui nel primo autunno reca una provvista nel suo nido invernale. Là, dorme ben nascosto per sei mesi o più, mentre le foglie cadono sul terreno boschivo e le ricopre poi la neve. Io ho preso le mie precauzioni secondo il suo modello. Il moscardino, o topo di nocciole, è parente della marmotta: fin da bambino mi raffiguravo la vita di questo sognatore altamente comoda. Non è un caso che, dopo la morte del padre, io mi sia smarrito in questo mondo protettore. Nella mia solitudine, nel solaio di casa, io mi tramutavo in moscardino. Per anni, esso fu il mio animale totemico. Mi sono cercato, ai margini della foresta, un posticino per la mia tana. Il foro d'ingresso non dovrebbe trovarsi al livello del suolo, è meglio una fessura nella roccia o dentro un tronco cavo. Di là iniziai a scavare il cunicolo, giorno per giorno, sempre più in fondo, raschiando fuori il terriccio, che poi sparpagliavo perché non ne rimanesse traccia. Una volta giunto abbastanza in fondo, scavai un secondo cunicolo verso l'alto, come uscita di sicurezza. Per ogni ingresso bisogna provvedere alla sortita, per ogni via pensare al ritorno: questo mi risultava chiaro fin da allora. Il lavoro doveva avvenire in assoluto silenzio e con cautela; dall'alto vi era di giorno la minaccia dello sparviero, e di notte del gufo, al suolo animali ostili, in primo luogo la vipera-il moscardino è sempre minacciato. È il tributo che paga alla sua libertà. Dopo aver scavato i cunicoli, si passava all'abitazione, una comoda cameretta, non troppo piccina, né troppo grande. Che vi potesse stare anche una femmina, non mi veniva ancora in mente. Nemmeno per la mamma c'era da provvedere: era presente ovunque, era la tana stessa. Una volta apprestata la cameretta e levigato bene il suo ovale, scavai il cunicolo di approccio alla dispensa. Questo era più grande, con una curvatura a forma di focaccia: con un granaio

In occasione di una mia recente visita nella capitale ungherese ho avuto modo di visitare uno dei luoghi meno noti ma più interessanti della città: l’ex ospedale segreto e bunker nucleare situato nei sotterranei della collina del Castello di Buda. La struttura è parte di un tortuoso sistema di circa dieci chilometri di cunicoli sotterranei, interconnessi tra loro; queste cavità (in parte naturali e in parte artificiali) passarono, all’unificazione di Buda e Pest (1873), in proprietà alla Capitale, che ne ordinò l’ispezione a partire dal 1930. Il tratto sotterraneo della Via Úri divenne il centro di allerta “K”, la prima area costruita nell’Ospedale nella Roccia. L’odierno museo è testimone storico, ben conservato, dell’intensa attività medico-assistenziale in alcuni frangenti drammatici che Budapest (al pari di altre città europee) ha attraversato nel XX secolo; operò in emergenza durante la seconda guerra mondiale fino al luglio del 1945. In seguito venne riaperto, in clandestinità, durante la rivoluzione del 1956 per il trattamento di feriti civili e soldati. Tra il 1958 e il 1962 è stato ampliato per resistere a potenziali attacchi chimici e nucleari durante la Guerra Fredda.  La sua esistenza fu tenuta rigorosamente segreta, in quel periodo, e aveva un nome in codice, Losk 0101/1...

(ES) La fortificación ejecutada al final de la Guerra Civil Española en la orilla norte del Estrecho de Gibraltar tenía como objetivos controlar la navegación entre el Atlántico y el Mediterráneo, bloquear el Peñón de Gibraltar y defender la costa contra un posible desembarco enemigo. Dada la capacidad de destrucción y el alcance de la artillería, la dispersión progresiva de los elementos convierte la fortificación en un sistema fortificado, un grupo compuesto por diversas redes o subsistemas con un importante componente territorial. El sistema de búnkeres queda obsoleto desde el cese de las hostilidades y poco o nada valorado en la actualidad; aunque este sistema fortificado merece situarse junto a los modelos de fortificación de otras épocas en términos de su interés histórico y su condición patrimonial. Sin embargo, y a pesar de que existen las herramientas legales necesarias, la realidad es diferente, y los búnkeres en la orilla norte del Estrecho permanecen abandonados y sin ningún tipo de protección. (EN): The fortification executed at the end of the Spanish Civil War on the north shore of the Strait of Gibraltar had as objectives to control the navigation between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, block the Rock of Gibraltar, and defend the coast against a possible enemy landing. Given the capacity for destruction and the range of the artillery, the progressive dispersion of the elements converts the fortification into a fortified system, a group composed of diverse networks or subsystems with an important territorial component. Obsolete since the cessation of hostilities, little or nothing valued at present, this fortified system deserves to be placed next to models of fortification from other eras in terms of its historical interest and its patrimonial condition. However, and despite the fact that there are the necessary legal tools, the reality is different, and the bunkers on the north bank of the Strait remain abandoned and without any kind of protection.

Era il 1936 quando un  ingegnere dal nome di Guido Tarantelli insieme al suo collega  Ing. Noli ed alle proprie maestranze, tutti provenienti  dall’ Abruzzo,  arrivarono in  Val Canale a seguito di una serie di appalti acquisiti per la  costruzione d’ infrastrutture civili e militari molto significative nella vallata. Subito si evidenziarono notevoli difficoltà lavorative e logistiche nell’esecuzione dei lavori edili. Visto il difficile terreno montano, allora privo di strade percorribili da automezzi, vennero ampiamente impiegati i muli per il trasporto dei materiali nelle zone in quota interessate dai cantieri, ma  tante furono le difficoltà che a un certo punto l’ing. Noli rinunciò alla prosecuzione dell’attività. Rimasto solo l’ing. Tarantelli mise in campo tutte le proprie capacità, rivelandosi essere una persona coraggiosa, molto tenace, con ottime conoscenze tecnologiche ed anche molto umana con i propri dipendenti, questo fece sì che superate le difficoltà lavorative dei primi cantieri, l’ingegner Tarantelli potesse ricevere l’incarico dal genio  militare di costruire diverse fortificazioni appartenenti al grande progetto del Vallo Alpino in difesa dei confini italiani.

This article presents a ‘pathology’ of the Cold War bunker via an analysis of the decay, entropy and post-human fecundity to be found within the closed system of these now abandoned man-made protective cavities. Opening with a contextual overview of current research in bunker studies, and providing an orientation to the variety of bunkers to be found across the US, UK and Europe, the article then presents fieldwork in recently opened bunker caves on the Norwegian island of Tjøme, foregrounding the complex’s after-life as an incubator for the extremophilic organisms and crystalline formations growing within it. These inhabitants adapt the bunker, producing a post-human ‘bunker culture’ of sorts, manifested in alien forms of survival and inter-organism conflict, that strangely echo Cold War science’s research into entropy and cybernetics, and that war’s co-option of matter and culture to apocalyptic, existential ends.

El presente libro estudia, inventaría, cataloga y restituye gráficamente todos los elementos de la arquitectura para la defensa de la costa existentes en el litoral de la provincia de Alicante, levantados durante la guerra civil española por las tropas republicanas para defender el territorio y a su ciudadanía de un posible desembarco de las tropas nacionales y de los bombardeos de la aviación fascista italiana realizados desde la isla de Mallorca. Se clasifican en siete zonas los enclaves militares de los que aún quedan restos: Costa Norte (desde Denia hasta Benidorm), Alicante Norte (cabo de Huerta), El Portixol (accesos por la carretera nacional de Madrid), Alicante Suroeste (accesos desde San Vicente hasta Cartagena y el puerto, incluyendo los aeródromos), Clot de Galvany (en la zona del Carabassí, Elche), Cabo de Santa Pola (junto al faro de dicho cabo) y Bahía de Santa Pola (en las playas y puerto de este municipio). Se realiza el inventario y el dibujo de todos los búnkeres, baterías de costa y antiaéreas, barracones militares y otras edificaciones de intendencia (polvorines). Se procede al estudio de las familias tipológicas de búnkeres y baterías en atención a su geometría, forma y superficie. Se aporta un extenso reportaje de fotografías de época de estas arquitecturas para la defensa.

(ES): Las fortificaciones militares europeas del siglo XX son hoy una ruina ambigua que activa el paisaje. Pueden entenderse como una marca que se convierte en un impacto estético en el territorio. Aunque Paul Virilio, hace aproximadamente cuarenta años, editó, de manera pionera, su "Bunker Archéologie" (libro y catálogo de la exposición homónima en París en 1975). Su fascinación por los búnkeres varados en playas comenzó antes, en 1958, sin embargo, las contribuciones teóricas en torno al legado de la arquitectura militar pueden ampliarse. Es necesario aproximar el tema, tanto como un objeto con interés artístico y escénico como por su relevancia fenomenológica y estética. Este estudio pretende cubrir parcialmente esta carencia, desde la reflexión sobre conceptos como el aura (Walter Benjamin) del monumento, la ruina o el residuo. Para ello, la metodología utilizada se basa en el estudio y el uso de legados heterogéneos, como las ideas de Virilio o las obras del geógrafo Eric Dardel, el filósofo Martin Heidegger o el propio Walter Benjamin, entre otros. Se expondrán ejemplos concretos de paisajes militares, como el Muro Atlántico, la Línea Maginot, el Muro del Estrecho de Gibraltar o el Muro del Mediterráneo. Es posible que la mayoría de estas reflexiones sobre búnkeres, en el sentido de ruinas fosilizadas de conocimiento técnico militar, puedan aplicarse a los restos históricos históricos más dispersos y abandonados. (EN): The European military fortifications in the XX Century are today an ambiguous ruin that activates the landscape. It can be understood as a mark that develops into an aesthetic impact on the territory. Although Paul Virilio, approximately forty years ago, edited, in a pioneering way, his "Bunker Archéologie" (book and catalogue of the homonymous exhibition in Paris in 1975). His fascination for the bunkers stranded on beaches came even before, since 1958, however the theoretical contributions around the military architecture legacy are not still enough. It is necessary to approximate the subject, both as an object with artistic and scenic interest and with phenomenological and aesthetic relevance. This study aims to partially cover this lack, from the reflection around concepts such the aura (Walter Benjamin) of the monument, the ruin or the residue. For that purpose, the methodology used is based on the study and the use of heterogeneous legacies, such as Virilio’s ideas or the works of geographer Eric Dardel, philosopher Martin Heidegger or Walter Benjamin himself, among others. Concrete examples of military landscape will be exposed, such as the Atlantic Wall, the Maginot Line, the Strait of Gibraltar Wall or the Mediterranean Wall. It is possible that most of these reflections about bunkers, in the sense of fossilized ruins of military technical knowledge, can be applied to most scattered and abandoned historical military heritage remains.

Die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen von Kunst zu, in und mit Bunkern ist der Ausgangspunkt des von der Künstlerin Katrin von Maltzahn und der Kunsthistorikerin Mona Schieren herausgegebenen Sammelbandes Re:Bunker. Ihm geht eine Kooperation zwischen der Hochschule für Künste Bremen (HfK) und der École Européenne Supérieure d‘Art de Bretagne (EESAB) in Brest voraus. […] Ausgehend von dieser Beschäftigung in den Lehrveranstaltungen und den daraus entstandenen Ausstellungen konzipierten die Herausgeberinnen einen multiperspektivischen Sammelband zum Gegenstand. Sie ergänzten die studentischen Arbeiten mit Beiträgen aus disziplinär unterschiedlichen Feldern wie den Kultur- und Kunstwissenschaften, der Geschichte, Philosophie, Kunst, Architektur und Biologie. Wie in den meisten jüngeren kulturwissenschaftlichen Auseinandersetzungen mit Bunkern bildet Paul Virilios Bunkerarchäologie (2011/1975) und dessen erkenntnisleitende Frage nach dem Hybriden und Ambivalenten von Bunkern eine zentrale Referenz. Und daher changiert der Band genauso wie einzelne seiner künstlerischen und wissenschaftlich-essayistischen Beiträge zwischen einer Faszination am und Schrecken vor dem Monumentalen von Bunkern.
